[iO] SDV/Tuning Adapter Troubleshoting Advice

So, contrary to my normal nature I decided to wait a couple of months before getting the tuning adapter (T/A) for my TiVo Series 3. I know to say people's success level at getting it to work is mixed, is being generous.

Even though it's dead simple to hook up, I still read the instructions that came with it, the info at TiVo's site, and the instructions on Cablevision's site (which I printed out). So, here's the good news. I expected the tuning adapter to not work and I am pleased to say that it has lived up to my expectations.

I called up Cablevision, got transfered to a digital specialist. He sent a software update which I think it got. We rebooted the tuning adapter, disconnected the USB cable, swapped USB ports, rebooted the TiVo Series 3. I know the USB ports are good since the wi-fi adapter works fine in either port. I gave updates to the status of the light on the adapter (on, off, blinking, steady). Used channel 777 (HBO comedy) as the test channel (verified I get it on my SA 4200HD in the other room). No luck. Obviously I never got the "downloading channel listing" prompt illustrated on the TiVo site and nothing on the T/A diagnostics screen. The closest I got to progress is when I go to 777 rather than get "channel not available" it says "searching for signal." At this point no harm. I still get all of my other channels (crystal clear and solid) just none of the new ones. I have an appointment for 4/3 for someone to come out and take a look.

Every so often I see the box light up solid, then do the blink thing for a bit and then go solid and then out. With 777 tuned, I pulled up the DVR diagnostics on the T/A screen. For the tuner that 777 is on the RC state is available. The current tuning status says Not Tuned: Wrong Card State (put it in italics in case that's significant.

So, if you're still reading, thanks for your patience. Before people tell me I didn't search the forums well enough, i did do a search and didn't find anything too conclusive. I figure I'd ask here. Does anyone have any ideas that I haven't tried to get it to work? I know all this SDV stuff is a bit of black magic, but Mr. Clark's law is true. Any technology if sufficiently advanced is indistinguishable from magic. So, any magicians out there?

Thanks in advance!

Explorer 4250hd no signal to Sony Bravia

New Sony Bravia 40" HDTV 1080i (40V5100) and Bravia 32" HDTV 1080i (32XBR9). Cablevision gave us 2 Explorer 4250hd boxes. Neither the component cables (from Cablevision with the boxes) or the hdmi cables (Monster brand from BestBuy) work. We only get video and audio to the TVs when we use a coax cable directly. We have tried every setting on the TVs and checked the 4250 settings. Also, its not a cable signal issue; we tried a room where we know the Cablevision signal into the box is strong, just in case the other rooms had weak signals. We've read Sony's guides, the 4250 guides (available at Cisco.com). We googled to see if others have had same issue and we found that those who have had issues have had issues with the hdmi only not the component hookup also.

So, we're thinking the 4250s are defective.

Ultra users please read regarding d/l speeds.

Has anyone noticed that their download speeds on occasion drop to the mid 70's to 80's for days on end?

For the last 4 to 5 days I was getting on average about 80 or so down. This was throughout the day and night. Now this morning I am back to 101+. This is not the first time this has happened.

Field Ops came over this morning but speeds were back to normal so they really couldn't do much at my house.

Field Ops feels 75 down is acceptable so I don't think they will do much for me. I would think a range of 90-101 would be good advertised limits for Ultra even though anything lower does fit into the 'up to' category.

I just want to see if other Ultra users are indeed getting the advertised max, or near it, more or less consistently.

btw... does your modem Link light blink constantly even when nothing is being transmitted? Mine is always the same blink rate no matter if I am downloading/uploading or doing nothing.

[Optimum Voice] Phone and Internet drop often....tv is fine

My internet and phone lines drop every 30 mins for about couple about a min and then they come back on without any intervention. TV reception has no issues. I called optimum several times. They changed the modem, checked the lines but nothing seems to resolve the problem. The last service man said that I should change my netgear router to linksys. I dont buy that. Anyone experiencing similar issues ?

Thanks,
Sun

i have the standard optonline service and constantly experience random disconnects every single day. i tried using a different router and also a new NIC on my computer but i am still getting the disconnects. i even tried bypassing the router altogether and just connecting from the modem into my computer but still the same result.

now, i do constantly use my internet connection for browsing, downloading, and gaming and so i'm wondering if i should upgrade my service to optimum boost to help alleviate my problems. anyone have a suggestion? thanks.

Ultra Speed Tests and Installation Reviews ONLY

Please - NO POSTS FROM NON-ULTRA USERS!!

Mods: please delete any post in this thread (except this one!) that is not a post by an Ultra user.

Ultra users: please post your speed test and any commentary about the installation and your setup, such as router, that may be relevant.

Everyone else: please read and don't comment. There are plenty of other ultra threads to crap on post to. There are two other threads on this topic with hundreds of posts and a few speed tests and reviews.

Here are the actual speed test posts I could find so far:

Optimum Online Ultra - Best Routers

I thought I'd start a thread on which routers people are using with their Ultra service. I have gone through a few so I'll break down what I've experienced.

Router 1: Linksys WRT310n with DD-WRT v24 SP1

I was unable to get the advertised speeds with this setup even after re-setting back to DD-WRT defaults.

With latest Stock firmware: Still unable to attain the advertised speeds

- Speeds were around 80 - 85mbit - This router apparently might not have a necessary gigabit WAN port necessary for top speeds.

Router 2: DGL-4300 - 75-85 latest firmware also does NOT have gigabit WAN port.

Router 3: Linksys WRT320n - Latest stock firmware.

- Speeds were on the mark at the 95 - 98 range. However I ran into an issue of after being connected, the router would have a bandwidth drain and my speeds would over time, decrease, necessitating a reboot. A friend of mine has this router with ultra and apparently does not experience this issue, YMMV.

Router 4: D-Link DIR-825

Gigabit WAN port and high end speeds. I have experienced with this model that after downloading large files or being connected for a while, the router would just stop working and I'd lose connectivity, forcing me to restart this router multiple times during the course of the day. This could have been a defective unit, YMMV.

Router 5: Apple AirPort Extreme N (Winter 2009 model) [currently on store shelves]

Consistent top end speed with loss only due to ISP network conditions, however it lacks some configuration features that most other routers have, e.g. dyndns etc. This router has a gigabit WAN port that can be forced into that or other operating modes.

If I had to recommend one of these I'd go with the Apple one due to the consistent speeds and stability. The lack of customization may turn some off to this router though.

Anyway, there you have my experiences, hope it helps some and please, feedback is always welcome, I am interested to see what routers Ultra users are using.
