Retention Dept: Distasteful Tactics to Keep You from Verizon

This is a post regarding extremely distasteful tactics used by Cablevision to keep you or have you return to them. I hope this may help other from making the same mistake I did.

I’ve been a long time Cablevision customer, almost 30 years. I recently switched from Cablevisions triple play service to Verizon’s. The day the Verizon technician was installing my service I received a call from a woman by the name of Bea in Cablevision Retention department. She explained to me they wanted my business back and were willing to offer a package that would extremely competitive. I listen to what was offered and initially refused it. The woman then proceeded to expand what they would offer. Here’s a list of what was offered to me.

TV: $35 for 2 yrs
i/O Silver Package
1 DVR Box
1 HD Box

Phone: $29.99 for 2 yrs
Optimum Voice (2 phone numbers)

Internet: $29.99 2 yrs
Optimum Boost

She went on to explain to me that I had to make this decision within 10 days to avoid a $40 porting fee for the phone numbers. She also proceeded to tell me they would come here and have all 3 of my service back up within a couple of hours. And one last thing explained to me that she would be my personal rep from now on and I would be able to call the number she gave me directly. So I was sold and I switched back. I went ahead and scheduled the reinstall.

The following week Cablevision performs the install of its services at my home. I took a later appointment that week because I was told it would take a few days to regain control of my telephone number back from Verizon. The engineer arrived, did what he had to do and explained to me that everything was up and running except for my home number which for some reason wasn’t ported. He told me the request had to be put in again and he would have to come back. Later that day I decided to call my representative Bea. I called the number I was given and it ended up taking me straight to the main Cablevision menu. When I had no other option but to speak to a level 1 engineer I explained to her I was trying to reach my rep at the extension I was given. She told me that that extension did not match any ones there. On top of that I was told that my account did not include anything additional besides being entitled to all 3 Cablevision services for $29.99 for 1 year. All the perks that convinced me to leave Verizon and go back to Cablevision were not there. All I had was a non working extension to try and prove I worked this out with Bea from Cablevision. After spending quite some time being transferred from department to department I finally asked for a manager who then explained to me I need to deal with Cablevisions retention department. I was transferred to a representative by the name of Mike. I explained to Mike that I spoke to a woman by the name of Bea who sold me the package I spoke of to come back to Cablevision. He told me he did know this woman but when I asked to speak to her he told me he could help me rectify this. Again I went through the specifics on what was offered to me. He then asked me to fax my Verizon bill to him which I did. Everything was supposed to be taken care of once again. It was not. The following billing period I saw I was paying the full price for the iO silver package, full price for my 2nd phone line and the boost service was never added to my account. Long story short I ended up without my home telephone number for a month, was hit with the $40 porting charge, never received the services such as iO silver and the 2nd phone line for the prices that were agreed to to have me come back. At this point I still have Cablevisions services because I cannot go through all this stress again. It took months to get things back to normal in my house. I am just really mortified about the business tactics that were used to get my business back. Im also frustrated with how Cablevision uses their low level staff as a buffer between them and their dishonest business practices.

If anyone else has experienced similar issues with switching back to Cablevision from Verizon please contact me and let me know. If anyone has any advice on what I can do to further my complaint it would be appreciated.

[OOL] Moving (IP Address)

I want to keep my IP address, but I'm moving from one apartment to another apartment. It's in the same complex, about a block or two away. Is my IP address definitely going to change if I move around the corner, or will it stay the same?

I have OOL without boost. Thanks in advance!

[OOL] DNS server problems - can't reach a security website

For the last several days, I've been having problems reaching http://www.castlecops.com. If I ping it I get an unknown host, and a traceroute stalls. I've called Optimum tech support and one time they said that this was a user issue and couldn't help, and another time they said they couldn't recreate the problem. I also sent them a screencap showing timeouts I was having even when I pinged www.cablevision.com

Finally, I found a post in the mozilla forums that stated the user had a similar problem with Castlecops, and the phone rep said it was a DNS server problem and they changed his DNS servers.

http://forums.mozillazine.org/viewtopic.php?t=655836&sid=9dbc307ba69011ee02417a5a2a09911f

quote:My DNS servers assigned to my computer by Cablevision were not resolving the ISP numbers correctly.
Tech support changed them and all is well.

I called back Cablevision and while the rep said he could connect to the site, another rep in the background found he couldn't connect! A friend of mine with Optimum couldn't connect yet he could connect at the same time with his wireless provider! The Optonline tech said he would write a report as it was obviously a DNS server problem and they would have to look into it. Isn't it as simple as changing my Optimum DNS servers?

I read another post here that suggested using other DNS servers. When I changed my local area connection TCP/IP properties from "obtain DNS servers automatically" and plugged in others, I had no problem reaching www.castlecops.com.

How safe is it to check speedguide.net for other DNS servers? Should I use Treewalk? http://ntcanuck.com/

If I change the DNS servers in my local area connection properties, what do I need to do in my router setup and software firewall?

[help] Using my own DVRs w/ digital box

I subscribe to the Family Cable package. Now that CV is moving SciFi and other channels to digital (http://www.dslreports.com/forum/r20464381-5-more-channels-going-digital-only,) I was forced to get their digital box (SA Explorer 4200SD). I did not upgrade to the full-tilt IO service.

The question is how I can run my two DVRs through this stupid box so that I can timeshift the way I'm used to using both DVRs.

This setup has worked for years: the cable line runs into one DVR and out ('antenna passthrough') to the second DVR's 'antenna in.' The second DVR's 'antenna out' runs to an RF modulator's 'antenna in.' The RF mod's 'video' output runs to the Home Theater System's 'video | monitor out' jack.

There are several other connections as well between the units (notably, an S-video cable connects the second DVR to the HTS 'DVD in'), but the upshot of this rather unorthodox setup is that both DVRs can record any channels simultaneously while I watch a third channel.

According to CV, I can only record the channel I'm watching. This is not helpful. So: any thoughts as to how to link in this stupid box to preserve my gods-given right to use my own DVRs as I see fit? (You might guess I'm a little cranky about this!)

5 more channels going digital only?

Anyone else receive a letter in the mail recently stating that TLC, E!, QVC, TruTV, Travel Channel and a few others are going digital only, and that you'll need a digital box to view them? wtf is up with that? Now I have to pay an additional amount per month just to watch channels that are included in my already bloated basic cable bill? Talk about extortion...

[OOL] [OOL] Does Optimum Online still regulate torrents?

Hi, I did a search and found some posts about Cablevision regulating the upload speed of torrents. Is this still the case? Most of the posts state that if you seed alot, you would be capped. I would be interested in the 30/5 boost package but if they are going to play games with torrents then I'll stay with my current DSL albiet it is much skower. Thanks in advance for your advice. I am in the Bronxd, NY.

[Optimum Voice] Phone dropouts

I live in the Commack area and recently we havbe been getting dropped calls. After 5 minutes the dial tone returns. I replaced the Modem but problem still persists. Also we have lost the on screen caller ID on the tv. Tech coming out this weekend. Any thing I can do to correct the problem. I'd hate to get a service charge for my problem. We have tried several phones, removed router and turned off computer to eliminate them as problems.
Thank You

[OOL] Every summer - Constant Drop Outs

Every spring/summer, once it gets warm out, my OOL service drops out numerous times a day every day all summer. I've had techs out here numerous times but as usual when they are here the problem mysteriously goes away until they leave.

Durring the winter months my OOL service is flawless.

Anyone else experience this?

Cablevision Do Not Call & Mail List Phone Numbers

Not sure if anyone has posted this, but here are the numbers to dial to stop Cablevision from calling and mailing you for their products. Also added phone number to stop Cablevision from sending your info to 3rd party vendors.

Do Not Call - 1-888-425-2088

Do Not Mail - 1-888-425-2090

Do Not Disclose - 1-888-425-2089

For all three numbers you will be required to enter your phone number, so be sure to use the phone number tied to your Cablevision account. Hope this helps those looking to stop the annoyance of Cablevision!
