[Benchmark] OC-8800GTS- (G80)

hey everyone..haven't been on these boards in a while...

just got a question:

I have a P5B Deluxe (not the wifi edition) and a e7200 with GSkill PC8500 ram (4 sticks of 1GB)and a evga 8800GTS(G80). Im wondering what else I can do with this thing...Im pretty scared to raise the clocks of my video card higher than it is right now. If anyone out there still has the G80 core evga 320MB edition (not superclocked)help :)...pics down below.

New mobo and cpu, high temps with water cooler

Hello all,

First off, I love these boards and am really glad to see all the info available here. Thank you all for your contributions.

I'm turning to you with another question. I just built a new system:
Mobo: ASUS P5K/EPU
CPU: Q6600
MEM: 4GB G.SKILL DDR2-1066
Cooling: Corsair Nautilus 500

I used the Nautilus on my old system, 3.2GHz Pentium 4 with Hyper Threading. Those CPU's are notorious for running hot and it always kept it around 48-52 Celsius under load. On my new board, when I first turned it on, I immediately went into the hardware monitor in the BIOS and saw 24 Celsius. I'm thinking "woo-hoo"! Then I see it creeping up as the CPU and mobo warm up. I'm then thinking "oh crap".

I put Vista 64 on it with no problems, but kept my eye on the temps. At idle the CPU is at 70 Celsius! Obviously I know this is too high, so I shut the machine off, take the water block off the CPU, clean it all up again with cotton balls and rubbing alcohol, apply the only thermal compound I have around, Arctic Silver II, and put it all back together. The damn temps are still 70 Celsius. The water pump and fans are all working, so I am at a loss, except for the thermal compound. Like I said, it is a tube of Arctic Silver II that is about 5 or more years old.

Can thermal compound go bad, or can you use the wrong kind? I looked at Corsair to see if there was anything about reinstalling the Nautilus, but I found nothing. Clips all appear to be firmly in place. No special thermal compound listed, except that everyone is saying to use Arctic Silver 5 now on CPUs.

I really don't want to pull the cooling system off because I will have to take the entire mobo out so I can remove the water block stand-offs, but I am willing to take any suggestions. I do have the stock CPU fan that came with the new Q6600 and could try that if there is nothing else you can recommend for my water kit, but I am hoping there is something simple I am overlooking so I can continue to use my water kit for overclocking and such. I have some Arctic Silver 5 on order, but it won't be here for a few days and I cannot get it locally.

Thank you for reading all this and I look forward to your suggestions.

Spraypainting Keyboard (Keys)

I'm going through the process of painting my laptop and was wondering if anyone has tried a matte gloss spray paint on their keyboard... or anywhere for that matter.

I would like to spray paint my laptop's, but want to ensure that the letters show through.

[Cooling] How risky is it to do this?

I have a DFI LP nF4 SLI DR mainboard. Everest is reporting that the "north bridge" (my MCP Chip, or is it?) at 49 degrees and my "motherboard" at 57 degrees. Now, that motherboard temperature, is that from the MOSFET area?

How risky is it to pull off those cheap aluminum heatsinks and install something better? What would you recommend and how would you attach them?

How hot is too hot for those anyways?

[OC] Problem if memory is not exactly at 1066 Mhz?

I am overclocking a Wolfdale e7200 on a Gigabyte GA-P35-DS3L and was wondering if there is any harm to having the speed of the RAM not exactly at the recommended frequency? The CPU has a 9.5 multiplier and bumping it to 3.4 and then fiddling around with the memory settings got it to 1074 Mhz. (not 1066)

I copied over a big file to a USB drive and got some corruption which I haven't seen in years of OCing. Have I violated a cardinal rule and hence that data corruption on the big file?

Should I play around with the multiplier and OC settings so I can get the RAM to time at exactly 1066 Mhz as it should to avoid any data corruption issues with whopper files?

The PC works fine otherwise. The only problem I saw was moving a 7 GB file (a VMware image).

CPUID Hardware monitor inconsistant report?

Hi,

Been having issues with this system for a while in that I would be getting the odd freeze, which escalated until I had to do a full system restore, to BIOS reporting CMOS corruption to more or les working again, etc...

By the looks of it, it appeared that the culprit may have been the existing power supply as these issues persisted after a complete system change (other than power). Power supply was an Enermax 620 W modular.

Anyway, I ended up monitoring the system with CPUID HW monitor and very quickly saw volts values on the Winbond W88367DHG chip vary wildly from 0Volts to silly max values.

(System is an ASUS P5E, Q6600, 4*2 Crucial Ballistic PC6400).

Anyway, by now pretty sure thast the problem might have been the power supply, I changed it for a PC Power & Cooling Silencer 750 Quad CrossFire 750W ATX V2.2 EPS12.

The system now apprear more stable (did not yet crash); however running CPUID HW is still showing variances on the primary chip as per the attached.

Is it normal for it do to that? Is the sky falling?

Oh, the only things not standard in the system is the Memory voltage raised to 2.2V as per specs and the speed of the RAM reduced to 5300 as crucial support list indicates that the 5300 and 8500 (but not the 6400) speeds are supported on this MB.
