Microsoft Flight Gimme A Break

http://www.microsoft.com/games/flight/#

I have been using Flight Sim since 5.1CD.

With every version you get the entire globe and it just got better and better.

Now, M$ wants to nickel and dime me to death selling me individual areas of the world?

I got the Beta and it is very nice.

But just Hawaii.

No thanks.

FSX still has a lot of life left for me.

I think this move will be the real death knell for Flight Sim.

What a shame.

"Now you can easily discover, rate, and download Skyrim mods directly through Steam. The Steam Workshop makes it easy to browse the most popular, newest or highest-rated mods of all time, as well as searching for specific content via tags such as “Armor”, “Quests”, “Dungeons”, and more. You can even see what your friends have added to their favorites. Once you’ve found something awesome, click the “Subscribe” button. The next time you play Skyrim, the launcher will automatically install the latest version of any subscribed mods and configure Skyrim to run them.

Mod-makers also enjoy a streamlined process for uploading mods directly to Steam. The difficult part, of course, is creating your mod. To get started modding, install the Creation Kit – free through Steam to all Skyrim owners – from the Tools section of your Steam Library. The Creation Kit is a powerful and sometimes daunting tool, but the community wiki at www.CreationKit.com is a resource for modders of all skill levels, even the total beginner."

Get Married In-game, Set a World Record

News Tidbit found at: WoWHeadNews
posted 18 minutes ago by Ashelia

Over at ZAM, the whole staff is participating in setting a world record on February 14th on RIFT. Anyone who gets hitched on Valentine's Day in RIFT will be helping RIFT set a world record of the most virtual marriages in a single day in a video game. Five of the lucky newly weds will even earn some special accolades from the RIFT devs themselves.

The idea of a MMORPG being in the book of world records is beyond cool to me and so is coming together as a community on a singular day, so I'm all for it. You can even get married using a trial version of the game. Click here to read more about it.

As an added bonus, comment in this post how online gaming has played a role in your relationship (or friendships, if you're going stag this holiday)! One winner will receive their choice of a Blizzard store pet.

[SWTOR] Reverse Engineering

Ok so i get mostly how this works. Heres a site that explains it but for those that are experts on this issue help me with the math and some understanding.

http://blackrabbit2999.blogspot.com/2011/12/swtor-reverse-engineering-guide.html

So my main is a tank meaning i want redoubt. Lets take a pair of boots for instance. So i reengineer the same boots 5 times then ill learn one of the 3 tiers (redoubt, critical, overkill). If i get redoubt on the first 5 then great but from what it sounds like it could take til 15? So now i have redoubt and i want veracity. So it could take reengineering that 5 times or up to 25 times just to get it. So to get redoubt and veracity, technically i could take me 40 times reengineering something (worst case scenario) to get one piece of gear where i want it. Is this correct?

Also, what about gear that has lets say defense already on it. Would it just increase the defense?

Finally, using same numbers from above, if i wanted to reengineer the level 50 purples from my crafting skill, would i possibly have to do those 40 times as well just to get them where i want them?

[ME3] Possible Spoilers But Cool Info

"GameStar" is a German games magazine, one of the reputable ones. The February issue which I have just gotten has a long article about Mass Effect 3. I don't know how much of this is already known. Here are a few snippets:

(1) On Mars, Shepard will be looking for a Prothean secret weapon which may be useful against the Reapers. Casey Hudson is quoted with saying that this doesn't mean the story is about THE McGuffin what will win the war, but more about "searching the whole galaxy for pieces of useful knowledge and war assets".

(2) At the start, people on the Citadel will believe that the war isn't their problem. This will drastically change in the course of the story.

(3) War assets can be all kinds of things from fleets to single people. Their contribution will of course be of drastically different sizes.

(4) If you enter Reaper-controlled territory, there's a chance the Reapers will try to hunt you down and you must do something to avoid them. That's referred to as a minigame.

(5) Reaper-controlled territory will change as the story progresses, but only main plot decisions trigger these changes. You'll have all the time you need for sidequests.

(6) Some missions are mutually exclusive. Which one you choose from a set of options might affect the fate of civilizations and the loyalty of NPCs.

(7) Some optional missions may become unavailable if you don't finish them before certain story events happen. That might adversely affect your campaign.

(8) There is a krogan on board the SR2. Either a known or an unknown one depending on who survived in previous games.

(9) All missions may influence your reputation with NPCs (unclear whether this only refers to team members). That in turn may influence your interaction with them in future. NPCs differ in what they prefer, some may be more impressed by Renegade decisions, some more by Paragon decisions, but all will be influenced by decisions affecting their species.

(10) If old team members are dead, different things may happen depending on the character. Sometimes a story arc will be completely lost, sometimes there will be a replacement character, sometimes the story will develop in a totally different way.

(11) There will be no "Reapers win" scenario, based on the reasoning that such an ending is unsatisfying for players and would lead to re-loading a saved game anyway. There will, however, be endings where whole species become extinct and many worlds are destroyed, including Earth.

(12) The Collector base decision will become important at some point, but whatever you did with it will not have any negative repercussions (How they'll manage that and make it still be important I'm curious to see).

(13) How the war progresses will also affect the Normandy somehow.

(14) The Citadel will be bigger than ever before and you'll meet many characters you know from the first two games. Many loose ends from the first games will be tied up, including the mystery of the Keepers. (I hope I'll meet Chorban again).

(15) Casey Hudson is quoted as saying that it is "a good idea to stick to your principles" with regard to your style of action, i.e. Paragon/Renegade. And I hoped we wouldn't be railroaded onto one path this time.... Though the context suggests that this might be NPC-specific, i.e. you should stick to your principles with regard to decisions affecting one character or species. I would like some clarification on this.

[SWTOR] Smuggler - Scoundrel Compendium

Introduction

As we seem to have a fairly large number of people currently playing Star Wars: The Old Republic I figured it'd be a good time to start a thread for the Smuggler Advanced Class, the Scoundrel.

Much like I did during Rift with the Cleric calling, as well as the Priest class in World of Warcraft, I personally will be focusing on the healing (Sawbones) side of things, but I'll also be talking fairly in depth in later posts about the Scrapper (DPS / PvP Centric) tree and play style. Dirty Fighting (DPS) I'll leave to someone else who has played around with it or wait until I've had a chance to do so myself.

I encourage all Scoundrel players (or their Imperial Agent equivalent) to add any useful information, theorycrafting, builds, or to simply discuss the various aspects of the class.

As I'm currently at work I do not have access to Talent Calculators so there will be no links to my personal choice of builds for Sawbones or Scrapper, but they will be added in a separate post at a later time.

Stat Priority

Just so this initial post doesn't look completely worthless I'll very quickly mention what our general stat priority will look like. This is just a general guide, it will work for all three specs and even the Gunslinger Advanced Class, but depending on role and tree the stats could potentially shift a bit.

1.) Cunning
2.) Critical Strike Rating
3.) Surge Rating
4.) Power
5.) Alacrity
Cunning is our most important stat. It'll give us bonus Tech Damage and Tech Healing as well as Critical Strike (albeit at a fairly unimpressive rate). Power does the same thing (sans the Critical Strike part) but the ratio is terrible, as in .23 per point in terms of bonus damage and .17 per point for bonus healing.

While Cunning actually has less impressive ratios, every piece of our gear (and I do mean literally every piece) will have Cunning on it and gobs of it. Power on the other hand is more hard to come by and usually at the cost of Critical Strike or Surge Rating.

Critical Strike is important for Sawbones simply because of how Diagnostic Scan works in conjunction with our Energy Regen, which is something I'll discuss more in depth in a later post, and equally important for Scrappers as you are a burst "fuck it - big numbers" type of DPS.

Surge Rating, which increases the amount of your bonus to damage / healing from a critical past the base 150%, is self explanatory.

Alacrity is basically Haste. I have yet to test if this affects the channel time of Diagnostic Scan. With a high enough Critical Strike Rating, assuming Alacrity does reduce the channel time of Diagnostic Scan, Alacrity will become a much more appealing throughput stat.

And just so it doesn't get lost under page after page in the original thread here are the numbers players will be dealing with when it comes to Critical Strike and Surge Rating, as well as the diminishing returns on those two stats.

Critical Strike Table:

1% = 23 (23)
2% = 23.6 (46.6)
3% = 24.2 (70.8)
4% = 24.8 (95.6)
5% = 25.4 (121)

15% = 31.4 (408)
16% = 32 (440)
17% = 32.6 (472.6)
18% = 33.2 (505.8)
19% = 33.8 (539.6)
20% = 34.4 (574)
21% = 35 (609)
22% = 35.6 (644.6)
23% = 36.2 (680.8)
24% = 36.8 (717.6)
25% = 37.4 (755)
26% = 38 (793)

Surge Rating Table:

1% = 5 (5)
2% = 5.2 (10.2)
3% = 5.4 (15.6)
4% = 5.6 (21.2)
5% = 5.8 (27)
6% = 6 (33)
7% = 6.2 (39.2)
8% = 6.4 (45.6)
9% = 6.6 (52.2)
10% = 6.8 (59)
11% = 7 (66)
12% = 7.2 (73.2)
13% = 7.4 (80.6)
14% = 7.6 (88.2)
15% = 7.8 (96)
16% = 8 (104)
17% = 8.2 (112.2)
18% = 8.4 (120.6)
19% = 8.6 (129.2)
20% = 8.8 (138)
21% = 9 (147)

15% = 7.8 (96)
20% = 8.8 (138)
25% = 9.8 (185)
30% = 10.8 (247.4)
35% = 11.8 (304.4)
40% = 12.8 (366.4)
45% = 13.8 (433.4)
50% = 14.8 (505.4)
As I mentioned in the Introduction portion of this post I will be adding stuff as we go along and once again I encourage all of you to do so as well. Thanks.

Game Dev Pulls out of E3 over SOPA

... starts Gaming Foundation instead!

http://arstechnica.com/gaming/news/2012/01/why-one-game-developer-is-skipping-e3-to-start-an-anti-sopa-crusade.ars

The Stop Online Piracy Act (SOPA) and its Senate cousin the Protect IP Act (PIPA) are like thermonuclear devices deployed to kill an insect. They would give copyright holders and the US government unprecedented abilities to summarily block and cut off funding for websites accused of violating copyright. Major sites ranging from reddit to Wikipedia are voluntarily going dark today in protest of the proposed laws, as an illustration of the silencing effect they could have on Internet free speech.

But that's just the tip of the iceberg for PC game developer Red 5 Studios. Not only has the studio blocked access to the beta of free-to-play open-world shooter Firefall for the day, but it also revealed last week that it is pulling out of the annual Electronic Entertainment Expo (E3) showcase, which is run by the SOPA-supporting Entertainment Software Association (ESA).

Red 5 will also use the $50,000 it would have spent on a promotional E3 booth to start The League For Gamers, a grassroots group it calls "a gathering place for gamers, developers and industry supporters who want to stand against legislation that's detrimental to the games industry."
The URL of the gaming foundation is http://www.leagueforgamers.org

Red 5 is the developer behind Firefall. Must say I have now bumped it to the top of my "must play" list for their opposition to SOPA among a bunch of companies more concerned about DRM and their bottom line.

The Red 5 CEO is a law student grad and was team lead for WoW over at Blizzard for 7 years.

In defense of Diablo 3, a conversation with a nay sayer

Defending Diablo 3: A conversation with a Nay Sayer

Hello. Are you excited for Diablo 3? No? Rage quitting, getting that "dumbed down" feeling? I see, I see.

Yea, I know, no stat points!? What! I mean, I really had to think about where my 5 points were going on my Barbarian. I mean, Arreat's Face took, like what was it? 108 strength? Yea. Just checked. Yea, so I had to plan my stat points to make sure I could wear that. Yep, then everything else was pretty much in vitality.

Whats that, you played a Sorceress? Yea, had to put enough strength in there to make sure you could wear your Shako and your Enigma Ghost armor. Did you put any points in energy? No? But.. didn’t they need like mana or something to kill stuff? Oh, I see. Yea, items do give you a lot of mana. Haha, yea Frostburns were pretty good gloves. Yea, I guess I can see that. So, you did like 35 points in strength and the rest in vitality? Yea, come to think of it, so did I.

Haha, yea, maybe they should have stat points in Diablo 3, just Strength and Vitality.

Oh yea, I had to put points in Dexterity on my Amazon. Yea. Just enough to equip Titan's Revenge. Yea. I had a Buriza-Zon for awhile too. Yea. I dunno though, Javazons seemed stronger though. Yea. 20 points in Lightning Fury, GO!

Dude! I know. No skill points. Its like, duh! Can this game get any easier?!?! Haha, yea, my Barbarian had 20 points in Whirlwind too. Haha, yea, Frenzy was good, until you got to Hell mode. Yea, then it was like, wow this is terrible. LOL! I had a Berserker Barb too, but man, was that like the worst idea ever? I do so much damage! To one target, while the other 5 surrounding me hit me with my zero defense. Yea, Vampire Gaze and Shaftstop made it fun. But it just took sooooo long to kill a pack. Yea, I would rather have just whirlwinded. Haha.

Oh man, yea, I had a Hammerdin in Classic myself. Yep. Those were the days. Rare scepter with +2 pally skills AND +3 to hammers. Yea. I found it in Nightmare. Yea. Haha. Yea, Fist of the Heavens was fun in PvP, but god, that spell was terrible in Hell. Yea, pretty much PvP only. Zeal, lol. Just tape the mouse button down and go make a sandwich, come back and Hell Diablo is at 3/4 life. Yea, I didn’t make one after they made it so Concentration stacked with it, my buddy had one. Yea, I would just log in to his character if I needed to kill Uber Diablo or something crazy.

Yea, its cool that all the skills in Diablo are pretty much available to you right away, and now they scale with your weapon's rather than how many points you have in it. Yea, Herald of Zakarum, Heart of the Oak, SoJ, SoJ, Shako, Enigma, Mara's, Combat Skills Grand Charms, what more could you want?

Yea, I like the way the skills on the monk really synergize now. I want to get a bunch of "damage to attackers" gear, similar to the Thorns aura in D2. Yea, in the Beta there was a spell that drew everyone in real close, then I could throw down some really strong AoE. It was a lot of fun. I cant wait until you unlock all of your skill slots and have a ton of abilities available to you, and then you can change them out if the situation calls for it. So easy to jump from a PvP mode to a PvE mode with the snap of your fingers.

What do you mean six skills available at anytime is lame? In Diablo 2, you only used like 3, haha. Why do you look confused? Here, Ill show you.

Amazon - Lightning Fury or Strafe, everything else was a passive skill.
Assassin - Either Death Sentry or a charge build up and finishing move, like Phoenix Strike and Dragon Tail
Barbarian - Whirlwind or.... whirlwind? Oh and your 3 shouts. I guess those count?
Druid - Tornado and Armageddon or transform into a Werewolf and Fury
Necromancer - Summon skeleton, Poison Nova and your choice of curse, Bone Spirit for PvP
Paladin - Blessed Hammer or Smite or Zeal, perhaps FoH for PvP and then a passive aura
Sorceress - A little bit of variety here, but really Fireball, Frozen Orb, Blizzard, Chain Lightning, add teleport, build complete

See, each class really only had a few options available to it for actual usuable skills. Everything else was a passive skill that didn't directly affect your game play, like Dodge, Iron Skin, Summoning Mastery or Warmth.

Yea, I know, I hadn't really realized that before either. So really, now you are getting MORE options to play with than before. Before you picked 5 skills to maximize, 2-3 of them being passive abilities and then a few random points here and there, relying on your +skills items to round your character out. Now you get 6 skills you use everytime, 3 passive skills AND runestones to modify each skill. Its wild!

Yea, I am really excited to play too, it just needs to come out already so people will quit complaining.

Is there still a way to get HL2 Lost Coast and DM without purchasing the $99.99 valve bundle? I already have HL2 installed, but only HL2. Just curious as I would like to play them again but not worth the price and Im not too concerned about many of the games in the bundle. Thanks a bunch!
