IW bans cheaters in COD MW2

Looks like IW is getting serious about hackers!

From Bit-Tech;
Infinity Ward and Steam have completed the first wave of bans for players using cheats for the PC version of Call of Duty Modern Warfare 2 claims Infinity Ward's Rob Bowling, with 2500 accounts now blocked from connecting to the game's multiplayer service. Posting on Twitter, Bowling claimed "the Steam ban hammer is coming down" and it certainly doesn't look like it was an an empty threat - we've found plenty of accounts now serving Modern Warfare 2 bans.

This is the first public statement regarding cheating in Modern Warfare 2 from Infinity Ward since the game's release and its controversial switch away from dedicated servers. New anti-cheat abilities were touted as a major benefit for the game with the move from Punkbuster to Valve's inhouse anti-cheat system VAC, promising a hack free experience for gamers.

It's likely more hackers will face the wrath of Steam's banhammer before long, although this will come as little consolation to those who've had their games ruined by cheaters, especially as VAC's automated banning procedure is typically slower than manual methods - it's taken over two weeks for this first round of bans to emerge, for instance.

Are most L4D2 players twats?

I played for 1 hour yesterday on 4 different servers. My experience was the following:

1- First server, we started survivors. As soon as the first round ended and we were about to play infected, 3 of the 4 other guys quit (raged?).

2- Second server, I played all the way almost to the 4th round. My team was good, but two of the player were the biggest asshats. Kept calling the other team nooblets on chat, insulting them. Even though I was ahead in the scoring they kept yelling "YOU GONNA DO SOMETHING SMOKER?" or "You just gonna stand there" all the time, until I told him to stick the USB end of his mouse up his ass and twist it until the words sounded distorted...

3- Joined another game where my team was horrible, and 2 of the guy raged in the middle of 2nd round.

4- The last game was the best, I was ahead for round 1-2-3 (buy as much as 300 points... I usually score good when I get boomer) but in round 4 (which I had never played before) I sucked terribly... they initiated a vote to kick me.

I felt pretty much insulted to be kicked from a game which I led in scores for the first 3 rounds. I had a distinct feelings they were children. In the end I secretly wished for people to get hit by a bus so much I was mad at the mess this was.

Where do you guys play??? I'm really regretting buying this game when everyone I've met so far (with a 90% ratio) were assholes or rage quitters.

Global Agenda -- Early Thoughts?

Any opinions about Global Agenda?

I thought it looked like a pretty nice looking Sci-Fi FPS/MMO combination. Also seems to have a lot of similarity to an old favorite of mine: Tribes (eg. multiple "roles", jet packs, deployables, etc), but with more content, more detailed arenas, and global online play.

Another thing that looked neat about the game: Looks like it has single-player, multi-player, and MMO play. Eg. You can pay for just the game and play single-player or online against others in multiplayer matches, or you can buy the game and a monthly subscription to get access to a larger online world with more and (supposedly updated) content, abilities, etc.

Looks good? Looks like a flop? Penny for your thoughts? (well, maybe not a penny...).

call of duty mmo

yeah sounds crazy right?
activision-blizzard, and iw teaming up to make a call of duty type mmo?
blizzard being king of mmos, and activision hinting at taking part of the market to a new type of mmo can mean possibly blizzards big hush hush mmo is really cod based

you decide:

heres the full article for those behind walls:

Massive Attack: Call of Duty MMO
By Tim Colwill - Fri Nov 27, 2009 11:26am
The launch of Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 was pretty difficult to ignore, especially for the PC gaming crowd. But in between the controversy over the lack of dedicated servers, lack of console commands, unflinchingly violent terrorist level and wild, unsubstantiated rumours that the game would occasionally release thousands of live ferrets directly into your computer case, we all skipped over something rather interesting: there are very strong indications that Activision are looking to turn the beloved Call of Duty franchise into an MMO.

The LA Times reported last week on the hype surrounding the Modern Warfare 2 launch – the usual fare, gamers dressed up in costume, staying up until midnight, and so on. But it was the very end of the article that caught our eye:

” Although Infinity Ward and Treyarch have produced sequels in alternating years since 2005, the publisher now has a third development studio working on future versions.

One person close to the company said it also was considering adapting Call of Duty as a massively multi-player online world. The genre, in which Activision's Blizzard Entertainment subsidiary is a leader, requires huge upfront investments but can be very profitable as players pay a monthly subscription fee.”

Not content with letting Treyarch and Infinity Ward do all the work, Activision has set up a fully-fledged third studio to work on future versions of Call of Duty. And a source close to the company openly admits that the MMO model is under consideration.

Now it’s easy to brush this off as mere rumour and speculation – mostly because it is – but some of you may recall that Activision were putting out a clandestine survey in the middle of the year asking players how they felt about the concept of a subscription-based online Call of Duty service. Specifically:

The potential online service would enable you to get even more out of Call of Duty with a new offering of online features and services that enhance the multiplayer experience and provide exclusive access to a group of gameplay enhancements [...] This potential new online Call of Duty service would be available for purchase as part of a special-edition game package, or by subscription (monthly, quarterly, or yearly). You would be able to start and cancel the subscription at any time, and any payment method will be acceptable (credit card, debit card, cash, check, etc.)

And of course it’s no secret that one of the major selling points of the Activision Blizzard merger-to-form-Devastator was that Blizzard are the undisputed kings of the massively multiplayer market, with the experience necessary to continue to rule over it. Activision CEO Bobby Kotick rightfully hungers to leverage Activision’s cornucopia of intellectual properties in new and exciting ways. As he explained while speaking to investors, way back in 2008:

” ..when you think about other properties that we own and control, like Call of Duty, and what would be the natural evolution of a property like Call of Duty into a massively multiplayer environment, and how do you monetize that...”

So yes, this is rumour and speculation, but like all rumours that inevitably turn out to be true, it just refuses to die. Are Activision considering a Call of Duty MMO? Well the only sensible answer is that they would be insane not to. MMOs continue to go from strength to strength in the games market, and therefore it seems inevitable that every successful franchise – and if there was ever a successful franchise, it’s Call of Duty - ends up receiving the online treatment in one way or another, even when it seems to make little sense.

But does this really mean we could soon be joining the Terrorism faction and spawning in the airport newbie zone, where Lord Chekhov demands we bring him the scalps of ten tourists? Only time will tell.

Project Reality?

Been hearing a lot of good stuff about this mod. Just want some inside opinions if anyone on this forum plays it. Two main questions...

Does what I aim at actually get hit? I want to like regular BF2, but the hit detections is ridiculous. Sometimes I'll shoot at people right in front of me and hit nothing.

How active is the online community? How many populated servers at any given time?

Oh, and I see a core file and a levels file on their website? Do I need both?

Operation Flashpoint 2 Dragon Rising

Although I've had the game since its release, real life, upgrading to Windows 7 and other distractions have kept me from spending any great time with it.

Just as well since codemasters has patched the mess they made with the lack of dedicated servers.

Having had the chance to spend most of the weekend on it, OP2 DR has become one my more favorite games. Playing on Hardcore to take away all the console additions (most annoyingly of which is the HUD for FPS dummies), the game is certainly challenging but fun.

Sure my AI has shot me more than once as well as blindly run into a grenade one of them just threw, but the open feel of the game is something missing in the current releases of the game. I have ARMA2 as well, but OP2:DR just spends more time running.

Even played a few hours online on 'annilhilation' and had a quality game with some great players.

Just thought I'd pass this along in case there are some who held of this purchase because of the controversies around the PC launch of the game.
