| Should I use static IP settings for Cayman?? I have like most, just upgraded to the DSL extreme. I have a static IP and want to know if I should set it up with my cayman and D-Link wireless router? I am getting some lag and stalls. Others have had the same problems and I've read that it is because DHCP attempting to access an IP.(?) I have no problems accessing the net, but just stalls and lag. I am using WinXP Cayman 3220-H D-Link 614+ Static IP -- A good argument is spoiled when someone comes along that knows what they are talking about. |

bobmcgPremium join:2000-06-30 Atlanta | Hi Ronnie!
I was unsure as you are what to do initially and entered my static ip into my 3546. This was a mistake, couldn't go anywhere. So I set things back to the way they were and everything went fine.
I had to tweak afterwards but honestly did not have to do anything to my netopia. It was all "automagic".
Best wishes!

davidgGood Bye My FriendPremium,MVM join:2002-06-15 none | reply to ronnie we have a couple users here who have extreme on a cayman. LBB is one of them, and he did not have to do anything.
how do you have the 614 setup? are you using the WAN port to connect to the cayman? if so, that may be the culprit. either change the cayman to bridge mode, or set the dlink's lan ip to one in the same range as the cayman, turn off DHCP server on the Dlink, and plug it to the cayman using a LAN port, not the WAN port. |

| reply to davidg Yes. I have the Cayman set up for the WAN, and use the 614, for my wireless. I am connected, did not have to do anything, just curious if assigning the static IP would stop the lag...

 | Ronnie, i use a Netopia 3546 with the extreme service and i think i have the same problem as you. Once in a while usually about an hour apart +/- the connection will lag badly or the modem will lose sync completely. I have not input my static ip in to the cayman either.
I'm not using any external routers or anything since the 3546 does that too. |

The link you directed me to was not the correct one. I had to got to advanced settings, and it showed my authentication was set to PAP and/or CHAP.
any more suggestions? I'm still getting stalls. -- A good argument is spoiled when someone comes along that knows what they are talking about. |

davidgGood Bye My FriendPremium,MVM join:2002-06-15 none 2 edits | oops...sorry, i pulled that link from my 3547 which is running 6.4 firmware.
one thing to try is bumping your max terminates and restart timer a little higher.
another thing you could do is to set your static ip in your Cayman. to do so on the advanced WAN ip page, change ONLY the local address to your static ip. do NOT change the peer address, as bellsouth sometimes gives you a different peer even though your ip remains the same.
EDIT: lastly, in your answer about the 614, you said you have the 3220 hooked to the WAN, this means you are going thru the 614 NAT, to the NAT of the 3220, to the internet, if i follow you correctly. this is a double NAT situation and will cause intermittent lag/stalls, not to mention screwing with any pinholes you must create for certain games or programs to work properly.
can you be a little more specific as to how the dlink is in this setup?
please post your DSL stats from the cayman also. |

| My Cayman is plugged into the wall jack to the WAN. My 614 is plugged into the Cayman. I use the 614 for wireless access with my laptop. Is that what you are asking? -- A good argument is spoiled when someone comes along that knows what they are talking about. |
|
davidgGood Bye My FriendPremium,MVM join:2002-06-15 none | waht port on the 614 are you plugging to the 3220? if you are using the dlink's WAN port to hook to the cayman, you are behind a double nat and this is most likely the cause of your problems. you MUST eliminate one NAT situation. if the dlink can be set to bridge mode, i would do that. if not, you can set it to an ip in the same 192.168.1.x range as the cayman, turn off it's DHCP server, and hook it to the cayman using one of the LAN ports on the dlink to connect to one of the LAN ports on the cayman.
if you want to use the firewall in the dlink to filter your traffic, you need to set the cayman to bridge mode, and let the dlink handle all ppoe login. see »Cayman Routers »How do I setup the Cayman in Bridge Mode? for the cayman configuration in this case. this way you would still hook the dlink's WAN port to a Cayman LAN port. |

| My disconnects have stopped, but still get lag/stalls from time to time. The best way to describe it is: Click on hyperlink, home page or just type in a link in address bar. It takes (sometimes)two to four seconds longer than with my other DSL connection. My speeds are showing up faster, up and down it's just that lag is annoying.
To me it seems like if I could get rid of the lag I would have super speeds.

also, you can follow the steps in »Cayman Routers »My Cayman keeps reporting Bad UserName/Password as it may stop the dropped connections. i can't swear that it will fix it, as it seems that BSFA has issues with the extreme package lately. they will get it worked out, but many folks seem to have the dropped connections. -- If you can read this, thank a teacher..........and since it's in English, thank a soldier. |

 | reply to ronnie Authentication pending error means no response from a Radius server. This is happening because you have PAP authentication turned off. |
