There are always ways....

...around everything. Even if MS didn't allow SP2 to be installed on pirated copies of XP, they would have found a way to bypass that. Look at SP1, MS tried to stop it from being installed on pirated machines, yet a way was found around it.

hmm, i haven't paid for an OS since before Win95 came out. i dont pirate, i got it as a result of working in retail, going to MS trainings. now i work @ MS as a tech, i get any OS i want for free and have access to their key generating site. SP2 is RC1 right now and I have it installed on a few of my machines. It's pretty cool. it's still got a lot of bugs in it but it's really easy to uninstall. as for bugs and security problems, there are ALWAYS going to be security issues. i dont know what u guys expect. you think MS is going to say one day, "ok we're going to make our software so it can't be cracked"...thats never going to happen because it's impossible to address every conceivable problem. if they tried to anticipate that and write it so it couldnt be broken, it'd take a lot longer to produce products and the costs would go up and it'd be even more expensive. what u people dont realize about why Windows is so expensive and say MS doesn't need more money, is that MS uses their revenue to continue to innovate and create new technology. if anyone here has looked into some of the newer features of Longhorn is going to have or looked at some of the other products make, you'll see its money well spent.

If Windows is so expensive because the money is spent for future development then why does m$ give copies to other countries for 1/2 price and we pay out the ass? I don't have a problem registering... but what I have a problem with is that I can only install it on one computer and have to buy 8 copies because I have 8 computers!! That puts a bug up my ass and that's why I stick with Mandrake Linux.. So in my opinion m$ still loses.

That's kinda MS's problem. Yes, I read about longhorn and no, I still don't want "innovative and new technologies" in my base system. I want a stable and secure OS that works well with others. "Innovations" (aka not the greatest software) seem to only open more holes and are added bloat (like Messenger IM starting up at boot in xp). I'd prefer to buy add-ons separate and get the most out of my computer cycles.

MS calls it "innovation", I call it "monopoly" and apparently most agree. When will MS give up?

on a lighter note. What was so innovative about leaving "hearts" out of Win2k pro?

Yes that's money well spent on a new top of the line 2500 dollar computer. The thing lags when running on a P4 3.2 GHz computer with an ATi Radeon 9800 Pro!

"These slick, 3D-accelerated features come at a cost, too. Even on our testbed, a 3.2GHz Pentium 4 running a high-end ATI Radeon 9800XT graphics card, the Avalon DWM seemed just a tad sluggish"

One of the problems is that there are third world countries that use MS products and simply don't have the currency exchange or wealth to buy windoze for personal pc's. MS has purportedly released copyable versions of their software in such countries at reduced price with same serials for economy reasons. After all, middle class person in Uganda cannot be compared to middle class in the US. At the same time, some folks have capitalized on this and reproduced XP etc, for sale on ebay and other sites. So, if MS restricts patches to high retail single serial number versions only, then they have a problem with third world countries.

Also, we all know that some network admins and bulk buyers cut corners. yeah, they buy enough copies but use the same s/n for all the work stations just so that they don't have the overhead of opening packages and keeping track of individual s/n's. This has been practice in 100 percent of the companies that I have worked for.

And there are those who hang out a shingle and open a busines and sell computers with flat out bogus software unknown to the buyer.

So, the idea of restricting upgrades to catch pirates will not catch the mainstream, but hurt the innocent.

I'm not convinced that MS is on the brink of economic harm and running a shoe string operation that has to decide about the cost of security vs. economic bankruptcy. Doubtless, MS could take a few MILLION and set that aside for better antipiracy enforcement. Hit the ones that are cheating, don't penalize the ones that are cheated by third parties.

Because we all suffer from unpached systems, MS will have to ultimately decide if they want to clean up this mess by patching or perpetuate it by gouging for profits.

I'm not condoning pirating, but on the other side of the same coin, I'm not condoning huge profits at the expense of the legitimate buyers who bought from honorable merchants. Nor do I condone the penilization of 3rd world country incentives, nor honoest buyers who got ripped off by dishonest vendors.

MS does have an enforcement attorney and investigation team. I've dealt with them before. They just need to allocate more money to go after more pirates.
