There are always ways....

...around everything. Even if MS didn't allow SP2 to be installed on pirated copies of XP, they would have found a way to bypass that. Look at SP1, MS tried to stop it from being installed on pirated machines, yet a way was found around it.

Re: There are always ways....

hmm, i haven't paid for an OS since before Win95 came out. i dont pirate, i got it as a result of working in retail, going to MS trainings. now i work @ MS as a tech, i get any OS i want for free and have access to their key generating site. SP2 is RC1 right now and I have it installed on a few of my machines. It's pretty cool. it's still got a lot of bugs in it but it's really easy to uninstall. as for bugs and security problems, there are ALWAYS going to be security issues. i dont know what u guys expect. you think MS is going to say one day, "ok we're going to make our software so it can't be cracked"...thats never going to happen because it's impossible to address every conceivable problem. if they tried to anticipate that and write it so it couldnt be broken, it'd take a lot longer to produce products and the costs would go up and it'd be even more expensive. what u people dont realize about why Windows is so expensive and say MS doesn't need more money, is that MS uses their revenue to continue to innovate and create new technology. if anyone here has looked into some of the newer features of Longhorn is going to have or looked at some of the other products make, you'll see its money well spent.

Re: There are always ways....

If Windows is so expensive because the money is spent for future development then why does m$ give copies to other countries for 1/2 price and we pay out the ass? I don't have a problem registering... but what I have a problem with is that I can only install it on one computer and have to buy 8 copies because I have 8 computers!! That puts a bug up my ass and that's why I stick with Mandrake Linux.. So in my opinion m$ still loses.

That's kinda MS's problem. Yes, I read about longhorn and no, I still don't want "innovative and new technologies" in my base system. I want a stable and secure OS that works well with others. "Innovations" (aka not the greatest software) seem to only open more holes and are added bloat (like Messenger IM starting up at boot in xp). I'd prefer to buy add-ons separate and get the most out of my computer cycles.

MS calls it "innovation", I call it "monopoly" and apparently most agree. When will MS give up?

on a lighter note. What was so innovative about leaving "hearts" out of Win2k pro?

Re: There are always ways....

Yes that's money well spent on a new top of the line 2500 dollar computer. The thing lags when running on a P4 3.2 GHz computer with an ATi Radeon 9800 Pro!
