xDSL can do OC1 (54Mb) over copper up to 1000'.

You put the DSAM in the neighborhood wiring box (with fiber back to the CO) and then OC1 to the homes.

I am only 700' from our wiring box, and SBC replaced the 50 year old copper 2 years ago, so I can dream....
