Yeah right!!

"Verizon will soon be offering 5, 15, and 30Mbps fiber speed packages"

Yeah right... Maybe in places like D.C. where Verizon has pulled over 250 of their installers to so they can roll out wireless, pots, dsl and everything else in one bundled package. But not anywhere or any city like where I am. Hell, they have been promising to get my DSL for over three years and I am still stuck with crappy connections.

It will never happen... They are to self centered on making the big bonuses and millions of dollars to give their Executives. Not about doing something for the customer.

Well when they keep promising that they will and never do and just keep raising rates with nothing new there are reasons why people get pissed..

Edit: "And it isn't because of a lack of funding. Aside from traditional revenue streams, states like Pennsylvania have doled out billions in incentives to Verizon to deploy fiber nationwide. Once that money was paid, lawmakers watered down state legislation to lower the bar on deployment. A decade old bill designed to deliver residential fiber gave Verizon billions, but gave residents scattered 1.5Mbps DSL. "

And that above just proves the theory about the Execs. If they are given all this money to roll out fiber where is it going??? Certainly not much fiber around here or anywhere else to the home.

The saddest part is fiber has enourmous potential. Like video over dsl... that would be a huge threat to cable as cable companies are even more greedy... I just got dsl i my area 3 or 4 months ago when the rest of the areas have had it for years, just aint gonna happen....

Vivi,

I agree. In a lot of cases when new technology comes out increasing speeds and the abilities of fiber, the fiber itself is the same. You just have to change out the electronics on each end. Such easy upgrades...

Hmmmm... If not at all about a money issue then why do the Telcos keep accepting it from various entities and then pocket it without putting in the fiber.

And yes, I do agree that it really is not about money. It is about the bully tactics that the telcos want to use to get everything they want. No matter who they stepped on.

Hmmm... A thought just occurred to me. Did Billy Gates ever work for a telco??? I see a lot of similarities.

Who doesn't? Don't like something move closer to CO or start your own ISP. It's really not their problem to get dsl in your area. Maybe some day.

Your kidding right? I am one of those people Verizon has promised DSL too for almost 7 years now when Verizon was GTE! I live in a community just north of Tampa Florida with over 3000 homes in it and NO DSL! I have a friend who lives less than 5 miles from me and he has DSL!!!

Shaw CABLE shows up about 2 years ago and sets up digital Cable and broadband and now has been bought by Roadrunner.

Verizon wonders why they don't make enough money, the answer is simple. They SUCK at providing service to their customers.

Open my own ISP? Gimmie a break. You still need Verizon to set-up the infrastructure in order to be a functioning CLEC.

I have been getting very nice mailings from Verizon on an almost monthly basis for over 3 years now asking me to sign up for DSL. Every time I get it I go to the website listed on the letter and it is the same answer every time- DSL is not avaliable in your area. Call the number and sure enough, no DSL in your area. So they are target marketing an area where they can not provide service. Every time I see a tech in the local remote, I stop and chat him up. He says that we will never get DSL in my nerighborhood due the the distance from the CO, the condition of the above ground lines (they have been spliced so many times over the years due to hurricane damage and t-storm damage that they are very noisy). One tech even went as far to say that because Cox had been in the neighborhood so long, that it wasn't worth it to try and get folks to switch!!!! Only way that we will get DSL is for the neighborhood to get wired for fiber. I am almost certain that it will not happen in the next 10-15 years. Verizon will be very specific in their rollout of fiber. It will be not be the scale that they talk about. Just look at their capex budget - giving wireless all the money it needs and starving the wireline side. I have not seen a big increase in their cap-ex that would indicate ANY type of wide-scale rollout. The cables have fiber very deep into neighborhoods and with much smaller capex bring the fiber to the home, or al least to the crub giving you 100 MB service.

These telcos get billions for the promise of fiber, but don't deliver. And then they threaten to hold out on fiber unless they get more money.

So as far as you know fiber is not about money.. You obviously don't know very far.

No they do not. They provide fine service to me for over 3 years. I doubt Verizon 'PROMISED' you anything. They probably stated they are planning deployment in your area thats all. I don't see how Verizon will come to you and tell you 'WE PROMISE YOU WILL HAVE DSL 100% ON EXACLY XX OF XXXX'.

Did I say I have a contract or a piece of paper from them saying "ON EXACLY XX OF XXXX'."?

When they deliver mailings to your door, come to your place of work to sell DSL services to you and then tell you 'sorry to have wasted your time but we are planning to be in your area in two years...' then that passes and another PROMISE of two years goes by...this will happen 3 times.

If someone says they are going to do something over and over again and they don't do it, that is breaking a promise where I come from.

Their existing phone service sucks as well as far as I am concerned. They have split the lines so many times in this same neighborhood that no one can get any Dail-up past 14.4 Kbps.

THANK GOODNESS CABLE EXISTS.

...And that friend who has DSL, switched to CABLE because he was tired of the outages.
