St. Pete/Clearwater/etc. FL - whatever happened to the GTE system there? Cerritos CA - sold to Knology Verizon Avenue "apartment" cable in various cities - sold to various companies (in Atlanta, the cable side mostly went to Advanced TeleMedia; on-property DSL went to a small company called Tphone.us) etc. etc. etc.

So that's who bought them. That was one suck-ass system. My Dad had this 5 pound cable modem, presumably pre-DOCSIS. It was a Bay/Nortel "LANCity". GTE was an interesting telco. They actually tried "innovation" now and again; the reason the service was so bad (at least on the data side) is that the system was built back when this cable modem thing was still "new". VZ then bought GTE and never really put any money in it. -- Thanks for the memories Don't forget to vote! |
