Re: Speedstream 5200 Updated Firmware HERE

If you have one of the newer 5200 modems pictured in this thread: »New SpeedStream 5200 comes out!
Don't upgrade the firmware posted here.

The updated firmware did the trick for me. Before I had to unplug the router and modem every couple of days (or even hours). Now my connection is nice and reliable.

It appears the "fix" for Sympatico users is to bring out a new modem with a better firmware installed. The existing modems will be sent back and upgraded as they are "turned around" to be sent back to new customers. Too bad there are many customers out there that don't have knowledge about this firmware upgrade. It would save Sympatico a great deal of money to have customers upgrade the firmware themselves...it is a simple push the button procedure.

I was occasionally suffering from this issue so I just upgraded the firmware. Everything seems to have upgraded and no loss in speeds but I have a few questions..

1) the updater software still claims the modem needs the update if I run the software again. Is this a problem? I've tried flashing the modem a 2nd time and it still claims to need an upgrade if I run the software again.

2) my modem didn't have the router functionality prior to the upgrade but it now appears it's using it. Does it now have a firewall enabled in the modem? I'm unable to allow people to connect to my FTP Server. Will setting the modem to Bridge mode make the modem function as it did prior to the upgrade?

3) When I log in to the modem, under Mode options, I have "use idle timeout" and its selected and set to 20 mins. Is this recommended or should I set it to Auto-Connect on Disconnect? Will these options be useless if I switch to bridge mode?

Thank you for your answers!

Ok I answered my own #2 and #3 questions above, however, if someone could confirm whether or not my #1 question is happening to them or if I should be concerned, that'd be great!

The firmware is updated I guess it is a flaw in the software updater.

thanks for your post glen! so I can assume then that this happens to you if you run the software updater again after you've already updated the firmware?

Tried to use update but it made my system reboot before it even found the modem. Any ideas on why this happened. Also I need to reboot computer for internet, resetting modem does nothing.

I'd appreciate it if someone could help me.

I normally access my 5200 E240 behing an SMC 7004ABR router. I disconnected my PC from the router, plugged it directly into the 5200 LAN port and disconnected the 5200 WAN cable.

I set my PC IP to 192.168.2.2 with a mask of 255.255.255.0 and a Def. Gateway of 192.168.2.1

I cannot access the modem from my PC and the firmware upgrade utility from BELL cannot see it.

I have never upgraded the firmware on it before. I have tried resetting the modem many times. I am not running Access Manager.

Any ideas how to get this to work?

If the upgrade firmware cannot find it I would suggest you try it with another computer if you can. The firmware finds most devices even those that are not SS5200s. I tried it on a SS6300, it found it but said it was the wrong type of device and wouldn't touch the firmware. Check your network adapter and cable...make sure it is a good one. Plug directly into the modem, no telephone connection is needed....no IP is needed either...set it to "obtain an IP automatically" This upgrade is fine for a bridged connection using any other method of connecting even Access Manager wouldn't be changed.

I finally got the firmware update to work using my daughter's Compaq notebook. No idea why my desktop wouldn't work.

After the firmware update the only items I changed were

- reconnect on disconnect (20 min. disconnect was default)
- I clicked on the BRIDGE icon to set it to bridge mode (I assume it was in router mode after the update)

I then put it back behind my SMC router and it appears to work fine.

Were the settings I set it to OK?

I get around 2400 kbps download and 651 upload on a speed test with normal HSE service. Is that OK?

Yes, ablatt See Profile, the settings you chose are correct and the speeds you're getting are great for HSE!

Were you experiencing the "sync-no-surf" issue, and if so, did the update fix it?

I've had the 5200 for at least a year and a half. Only in the last couple of months did I experiece a problem where when surfing I would get many page not found errors.

I thought they may be DNS related but wanted to try the update just in case they weren't.

So if I want to install this firmware, I first hook up my computer directly to the modem and remove the router, update, and then re-attach everything the way it was before right?

That is correct. You don't have to do anything else. The software finds the modem, you hit the button and away you go. Make sure you have the correct 5200 as there are pictures at the beginning of this thread. After you upgrade the firmware go back to your previous modem/router setup and you are done....no muss no fuss.

The update seemed to work for most of the day, but the no surf error happened again. I thought the update was supposed to fix it permanently

Yes it does fix the synch no surf issue. Now that you have updated the firmware, if you are having trouble with synchronization, Sympatico tech support can now deal with that issue instead of both issues fighting each other. Does this make sense?
