hehe, i just noticed the bell logo "making it simple" OMG that is a good one
That is pretty funny. I am pretty good with networking fooling around with hardware, but that is just plain funny. Making it simple...LMAO.
I have not had any issues with my modem, so I will just skip the upgrade. Thanks for caring Bell, but I'll pass. |

 | do i have to be at the original bell firmware or will this overwrite any updates i may have done (i.e. via the uncrippling the 5200 faq)? |
|
AirwolfPremium join:2001-10-30 Windsor, ON | reply to MacGyver It's storming here again and so far the modem isn't acting up. |

Why would you want to patch the A3J version you have? The bell firmware is crippled, you cant even foward ports on it. A3J is a good stable firmware for most people. -- Please Visit PlanetMADtv. Want to see MADtv on DVD? Sign the Petition! |

 | reply to MacGyver I have a Mac and was just shipped a Speedstream 5200 from Bell. Is there a way I could update it. Is it really necessary? -- My Website - C Parna - PowerBook G4 15" SuperDrive, 1 Gig of Ram, 80 Gig HD |

If you don't have any issues, then don't worry. If you will have issues with the modem, then you'll need to take the modem to someone that has a PC and flash the firmware that way. -- Please Visit PlanetMADtv. Want to see MADtv on DVD? Sign the Petition! |

in my case i'm not on A3J but A21 (i couldn't get A3J to install properly). my only concern is fixing the speed slowdown issue..don't have much need for the other uncrippled features. |

| reply to MacGyver Hey guys this update is for Bell/Sympatico firmware. You are going to confuse the mortals by talking about the other versions...this addresses an issue with the need to reboot the modem every once in awhile to get back to the internet itself even though the modem seems to be running fine. |
|
1 edit | reply to MacGyver I am one of those who suffer from Sync No Surf illness. I have just chatted with Sympatico Tech and he told me yes it is aware of such problem and he?they? refer to as "Connect Can't Browse". and upto the last time I called to get this problem fixed,,, they blamed it on my end. Well I guess they were right... my end being my modem. (2nd modem)
Now we'll see how it does in real-world torture test.
While talking we came to a firmware talk and tech told me that he'll send me a CD with new software and firmware for SS 5200. Once I receive it I'll check the version of the firmware in the CD to see which one it is. ( I think it is the previous one which allow builtin pppeo & router thingy~) |

Hopefully someone from this forum will alert them about its availability here. They will be afraid of it of course until their Managers learn more about it. |

Haha... Thats funny... A non-official forum has the access to the firmware, but the techs on the phone cant recommend it because they dont know... They really should be brought up to speed much faster on issues like this. Sympatico should even do a mass email to all its subscribers. -- Please Visit PlanetMADtv. Want to see MADtv on DVD? | reply to MacGyver I am testing this firmware myself in Bridged Mode along with my Dlink router. |

 | reply to MacGyver I am guessing users who has been upgraded to 3mbps does not have this problem ? |

 | reply to MacGyver Thank-you, thank-you VERY much MacGyver for this excellent post! I'm the only computer literate person in the household and for now at least, everyone else has stopped yelling at me saying "The Internet's broken again!"
I've been going crazy over the past 4 weeks trying to solve the problem of our internet connection dropping as much as twice a day for no apparent reason. And of course, as soon as I tell Sympatico tech support that I'm using a router, they immediately tell me to bypass the hardware as it "might" be the cause of the problem. Despite tech support's best efforts the problem actually worsened to the point where everyday day after work, I would actually expect to find the modem frozen in the ready state (3 green lights pwr, dsl, enet) and the Internet unavailable.
By stumbling on your post while goggling, I learned for the first time that there was hope for a real solution and more importantly, that I was not the only Sympatico user with this problem, as tech support convinced me to believe.
Since using the utility in your post to upgrade the firmware on my 5200 modem, I've enjoyed a very fast and stable Internet connection, which I will continue to test and monitor over the next few days. The job of convincing my family that Ive resolved the problem isnt over, but I would like to thank you in advance for giving me something good to look forward to when I get home from work.
