Here are some pics of the interface.

Thanks. That looks very similar to the crippled SBC Firmware on their 5100 (same insides, just no USB) as seen here »SBC SS 5100b config page pics

Back to the firmware upgrade now. Has anyone had any negative issues with the new firmware? Has anyone had any issues with a freezing or "no surf" condition?

There were thunderstorms last nite along with heavy rain. Any of you people who upgraded to this new firmware have any problems? I didnt upgrade and my modem locked up instantly.

If is very hard to troubleshoot a synch issue on a person's line if they are having this "synch no surf" issue. If a person has to reboot their modem each time it freezes up it gives a tester the wrong impression. If you decide to upgrade your modem to the new firmware then any trouble you have will be a genuine "line" issue and then a tester can see when or why you are having problems.

I wont be upgrading to the new firmware as my service will be cancelled on june 3rd so I dont want to play with the modem in anyway (just in case I get charged). But I am very curious to know whether these users with the new firmware have corrected the problem.

It sounds like you are suspecting this to be pirated firmware. Believe me I have installed it on several machines already and have had no issues to speak of. This is firmware that is going to be applied to all the shipped modems now so if you don't apply it now the next time it comes out to another customer it will be upgraded. Save yourself some headaches for the next few days. If anyone did have any issue with it they would be screaming at us in this forum. Go ahead be brave.

No I am not suspecting this is pirated firmware. I am not sure how you got this idea. I only have about 11 days left with the service and I do not see a reason why I should be upgrading now. For me, there's no point of taking any risk even if the firmware is legit (which I am confident it is). I'd rather have the techs flash it themselves and screw up the modem themselves, I dont want to take any responsibilty.

I upgraded to this firmware, but seems that my speed has dropped abit. Can anyone teach me how to change back to the original firmware? I want to see the difference.

You can't go back to the previous firmware with this upgrade path. See »Bell Canada Internet FAQ »Is there a reliable speed test for Bell Canada customers? to verify what your actual download speed is.

The new firmware seems to have fixed the freeze-up issue with the 5200 for me but the occasional speed drop requiring power cycles are still there. Well, at least that's an improvement. This never happened with the Alcatel modem I used to have... until it died of old age.

But when I read about the issues many members of this forum are having I consider myself blessed; except for slowdowns once or twice a day my speed with the Ultra package is a very consistent 3800/800, as it was with the old firmware. I don't expect perfection so I am relatively satisfied with Bell's service.

In case anyone is wondering. The firmware upgrade is pretty straight forward. You have to be connected to the modem directly...click on the unzipped upgrade module and it will search for the modem. You don't have to be online with Sympatico at the time...just make sure your ethernet cable is connected to the modem...the software will do the rest. It is very quick to process the upgrade. If you have Access Manager on your desktop you can reconnect to Sympatico right after the modem reboots. If you are using the internal PPPoE then it will ask you to re input your User ID and password then re-save the settings. Works like a charm.

Interesting. I didn't use the upgrade (don't want to lose the line stats), but after the storm rolled in I've been experiencing the modem lock up problem every few hours. Before yesterday, I hardly ever have to reboot the modem.

My neighbour has been having issues for months. I applied the patch yesterday and so far no disconnects or need to reboot the modem. Keeping my fingers crossed.

Is there any official bell page with this firmware yet? Not that I think with a thread this size you would be releasing some hacked firmware that this forum wouldnt support, but im just curious.

The firmware is official, the installer has a Bell Logo on it. And it will not install if you've replaced the firmware in your modem with any unsupported ones.

How long can a connection be connected (same IP) ?

Bell tech told me anywhere from 24~48hours.

Sure, there is auto-reconnect,,, which means it does disconnect.

Anyone know Sympatico disconnect you? My Dlink router shows PADT TAG. (Than again it is all random timing)

Do Sympatico force disconnect ? and make you reconnect?

The Bell tech is incorrect. I, and many others in this forum, have been connected with the same IP address (no disconnections) for weeks at a time. I think the record I heard at one point was close to 2 months. So, no Sympatico does not force a disconnect.
