I'm in the same boat here.

For as long as i can remember i was at 12000. Yesterday i called VOL twice and they both said two different numbers. One said 14k and one said 16k. Thats kinda crazy...

I just called today and they said my loop was around 7k...

Not seeing any new neighbors

I moved from 11,000 feet a year ago to 18,000 feet today! I called twice, and the second rep told me that my CO could "easily have changed". I read here that's possible. I feel like I got fed a line.

Either the copper is stretching or there has been a massive re-work in how the MLT calculates distance. Even if that’s the case there is a good argument that we could now push DSL out to 22K feet since the old 12K is actually 15K and the old 18K is actually 21K and it's always been working fine.

What it looks like to me is that is exactly what has happened. They realized that with their new MLT test that the old tests were off by about 3000 feet. So now they advertise they can go 1.5 out to 15K which is crap because it's the same old distance that they could reach before. Time to issue a press release with the good news!
I'm thinking this is the likely answer. Still awaiting word from Verizon on this.

Two questions:

Has anyone heard anything more internally?

and

Has anyone who has called in to see if they qualify for the new upstream speeds been forced to downgrade because of a loop distance increase?

Cross your fingers that you don't get an up-grade like this.

2004-05-24 16:22:15 Speed test @ nyc.speakeasy.net 1480/132 kbps

2004-05-25 03:57:02 Speed test @ nyc.speakeasy.net 715/133 kbps

No reason why....all of a sudden...but there is a trouble ticket on it...oh boy.

Last year when the 1.5 upgrade was being offered, my loop length was 13,500....said I didn't qualify as I exceeded the 12,000 limit.

Just called for the upgrade, and my loop length is now 16,242.

Problem is I can't firgure out what state I pay taxes in anymore....Virginia, West Virginia or Verizon.

Argh....I am so tired of this game.

Yet another person whose loop length increased about 3000 feet.

I think that theory mentioned above is sounding more and more plausible.

You are the 4th person reporting as having this problem in our area that I know of. It sounds like our CO is oversubsrcibed, no wonder considering the growth our neighbourhood is experiencing.

Well, as I stated yesterday, I called Verizon & was told that I was right on the border of 18,000 feet & he said I didn't even qualify for DSL at all (even suggested I might have to cancel it!) but I have zero problems with my DSL. When I signed up for DSL back in Feb I was around 13,000 - 14,000 feet. So, out of curiosity, I emailed billing. You can email them to request speed upgrades so I know they run the loop test. I emailed them & simply asked them if they could tell me the distance I am from the CO, said nothing about speed upgrades, etc just asked for the distance. I figured if I got a lower number this time, at least I would have it in writing. Well, here's a big surprise, they won't give it to me in writing... says I have to call to find out.

At this point it seems pretty clear that they can't "run" any tests. They might be able look at their version of the distance database but it seems even that's being discouraged.

Squeaky wheel...hopefully...

I called, and after getting a small run-around, I got repair. The guy ran some sort of test, and saw that my speeds were very high. He either couldn't - or wouldn't - tell me what my EWL is, but he said billing's database definitely had mine wrong. He called billing on my behalf, and he says I have the upload speed increase and gave me a confirmation number. We shall see...

Hi,
That happened to me back in 1997. I was told I was too far away to get it. I spoke to a Engineer at the local CO and he got the order thru.
When we went to the faster speeds last year same thing happened. I was told I could get the 1.5 meg upgrade but it was $79.+. After the price drop I was told... "Sorry you are too far away".
This is a old practice and I think the State regulator commission should be made aware.

my distance from the CO is 7k feet, even though i think i'm just a few blocks away from them. is there a site or whatever with verizon's CO directory/location? i just want to check if the verizon building near my house is the CO.

these are the new ETHIC standards for the 21st century.

LIE then LIE then refuse to put it in writing.

they're not stupid, they know the volume of calls this upgrade has been generated, and probably have had staff meetings already , preping the reps what to say(just guessing) so knowing this, they know why you asked!

I got a “line” today from a supervisor that they sometimes add length to people’s lines to help others who can’t get DSL get it. And that I should be happy I even have DSL.

That almost sounds like a socialist re-allocation of wealth. I don't like it. Loop length, even equivalent electrical loop length should be a technical issue, not a social issue.

well here is a thought for you ppl with verizon. I have qwest and was having problems with my line. tech came out put a new nid outside and filtered my connection right there since I ran new lines in my house. He then went to land box or whatever you call it where the lines are bridged. He cut it there so it no longer runs down the street adding excess length to my line. My modem no longer retrains once a day now.

so maybe find a way to get them to come out and cut the bridge so that it goes directly into your home and not continue down the street. might work for some might not for others.

I have VOL and want the upgrade in speed but should I call them and see if I qualify, because I am 3k away from the CO. So should I bother with it or do you think I will get burned??

Well if your WIRE length is really 3K, even if they add another 3K to it, you should be fine. But it is NOT building to building, it is WIRE length.
