Re: [wired] BEFSX41 Firmware 1.51.00 - POST YOUR R

I seem to be having a few problems with Steam games (Half Life 2 Deathmatch in particular) with this firmware. I often have to disconnect and reconnect to the game server during level changes since the game evidently has no success communicating with the server. Map downloads in the game are almost always corrupted. I took a look at what was wrong in one of these maps and I noticed that the end of the file was filled with null bytes (a few megabytes worth) that should have been filled with data.

Whats up at LINKSYS??????????????????

1.50.18 was released on 4/30/2004
today we have 07/30/2004

a non working firmware upgrade on their website for 3month ?????????
Today is 1/14/2005. It's now over 8 months without an updated firmware.

APPARENTLY LINKSYS DO NOT CARE ABOUT THEIR CUSTOMERS.

I am NEVER EVER buying a Linksys product again not matter how great it is. I know now how low quality their firmwares are and how they treat their customers.
I am also recommending my friends and others I talk to though my work to stay away from Linksys.

Eljay. Running I'm a SX41 with the v1.51 firmware and no issues with steam. I play HL2 and CSS frequently. Lets compare notes if you'd like.

Re: [wired] BEFSX41 Firmware 1.51.00 - POST YOUR RESULTS HERE

Two notes on your comments .

Even though it looks like 8 month since the last updated firmware, keep in mind that a few betas have been released to few members here. If you search around, you will find references about 1.51.00_hb (Sept 09 2004), 1.51.01 (June 03 2004) and 1.52.0 (Oct 28 2004). Although these betas are around, that does not mean these are better firmware. That's perhaps one reason why you keep earing about 1.45.7 and 1.51.00 . Just to make fun of Linksys a little more: The last official release for the BEFSX41 is 1.50.18 (Apr 30 2004) which is kind of ironic because it is one of the worst version of the firmware I have seen so far.

Second comment about the crappy firmware. You are right, Linksys firmware quality is not the best. However, you must admit that the unit itself is not expensive either. You can expect to run a F1 race with a 3 cylinder firefly. Still, if you look on the wireless side, Linksys got the WRT54G and WRT54GS units. Those are quite appealing since they run on open source code. There are multiple 3rd party firmware around too. You don't like one distribution? Then you simply switch to another one . I think Linksys has a lot of future in manufacturing device that are open source. Since we all know they have crappy firmware, at least with these units we have the option of having the software community to write its own .

What i have found with the 1.50.18 f/w is no connection at time most of the time.Could not get msn to work or email nothing would connect been the worst f/w linksys had put out. The f/w i had previous was 1.45.7 worked great thought since there was a new f/w that i would try it no good.Linksys you better come up with better service and f/w alot of customers not happy with the results you have put out.Get your head out of your ass and get working on something. Re: [wired] BEFSX41 Firmware 1.51.00 - POST YOUR RESULTS HERE

Just wanted to say thanks to Flogator for fixing this problem. I did not see it until I decided to upgrade from the original 1.4 code it came with (to much free time I guess). Not only did this tracert problem become apparent but I lost functionally with regards to being able to explicitly deny and inbound port/protocol. Once I upgraded to the Linksys latest version, I can only control this outbound.
If Flogator does not already work for Cisco, I think they might want to offer him a job in San Jose. I hope Linksys does not start down the same road Cisco IOS has gone, adding every type of service you could ever want and also being so generous as to introduce 10 bugs for every service.
No where could I find this bug on Linksys site. Shame on me for not Googling from the get go.

Re: [wired] BEFSX41 Firmware 1.51.00 - POST YOUR R

There is still an issue with HL2 and CS: Source.
It worked fine on 1.50.18, but I had to set the connection speed down to 256 kbps to make it work in 1.51.00_hb, but I actually want to play on full internet connection speed!
Are there any results or hints yet?

I recently bought this device and this reminds me next time to check the Internet discussions before buying such a fuzzy and unstable product.

I installed this 1.51 firmware release and most of the time it seems to work, unless I want to download a big file (>50 mb) like a Windows servicepack. What happens is that most of the time the download freezes before it's complete. However, when I disable my personal firewall (Sygate Pro) the download continues fine. Euh ??

I checked my MTU and just like on my previous router (Draytek 2200E) set it as 1492, since I have aDSL. Not sure if anyone has an explanation for this but just wanted to share this with you.

Regards,
Olaf

There is a problem in most of the 1.5x.x firmware about NAT entries being idle for more than 10 minutes. In which case, the BEFSX41 removes these NAT entries thus causing some problems. FTP session are susceptible to this kind of things since there are two connections: One for control and one for data.

Still, I am not necessarily convinced that this is your problem. Especially that you say if Sygate Pro is disable, the problem goes away.

In any case, could you indicate after how long (in minutes) in the download process does the downloads stop?

Thanks for the 2 quick replies.

Basically the downloads run anywhere between 3 to 10 minutes. It really depends and seems like it is almost random.

The last file I tried to download (128Mb) ran for 20 Mb and then locked up. I even tried the suggestion of the 2 ICMP packets but even explictely allowing ICMP source quench and destination unreachable don't fix it. Makes me wonder if maybe even the ICMP "time exceeded" might be necessary then.

Anycase, I thought about this again and I don't know exactly, but for some reason I started thinking about the security features of Sygate in relation to this problem. I read in this forum somewhere something about the fact that the router rewrites the packages based on the MTU and MSS.

So as a test I disabled in the Sygate the option that says "enable anti-IP spoofing" which randomises the TCP sequence numbers. And tadaaaa... downloads now work like a charm. Could it be this Sygate feature conflicts with the way this firmware works in processing packets ?

I just downloaded 10 files each over 100 Mb from various locations and they all went smoothly. I keep you posted on any updates.

Thanks again,
Olaf

Just as a note I use the 1.51.00 firmware on my SX41 and have never had any issues downloding using WS_FTP(freeware). I have downloaded several versions of Linux which includes multiple 600 mb plus cd images. I am using WinXP Pro on a cable modem(Comcast).
However the SX41(or at least that firmware version) is not without it's issues though. But for my uses it is not very problematic however I use very few of the advanced features
