3DESBaby

What's so funny about this is the exact people who useto support those record exec bastards, are getting screwed now. Who do they think buys all these CDs to begin with? Not adults, not older people, all 13-20 yr olds, and that's who they are targeting, and who are the most computer savey demographic...not a smart thing to do.

As one brilliant poster already posted, encryption is the key (get it, key..anyway)...simply have a server outside the US, you have a secure connection to it, it has a secure connection to another computer in the US...file share away, they can count packets, they can bitch and moan, but they can't break into 3DES encrypted packets...and if they ever break that on a supercomputer, simple double the keylength to 128bits for all 3 keys...no breaky...

For the people who have been sued by the RIAA already, how did they get the info about them? Was it from Kazaa for example about what songs they got/shared? Or was it from different ISPs?? I can't believe Kazaa would in any way help the government...and if just ISP's, that's cake to get around with encryption...

I just finished a big project with 3DES encryption, and am putting it into a windows state...we'll see how it goes...if well then maybe this will be the p2p encryption one..

I'm not sure how the hell you think encryption will change anything. Sure, encryption will prevent a third party from intercepting traffic between two other parties - but that's not what's going on! They don't catch people by intercepting and recording them uploading a file to somebody else. They do it by downloading the file from you themselves. Encryption won't do a damn thing about that! You'll be sending them their evidence over a nice, encrypted connection, but you'll still be sending them their evidence.

How would encryption help? If files are encrypted how are you going to get the encryption key to actually have the file usable? Wouldn't you have to also send the key, which would be in plain text? I'm not too encryption savvy, as the only thing I have encrypted is a VPN tunnel. Maybe there is a way around this. Hopefully someone can fill me in.

@mchsi.com

What I don't understand is how are they losing money ?

I mean I would never purchase a CD, if I can't get it for free, that's fine I can live with out it.

No lost profit there I guess

Re: 3DESBaby... NOT SO FAST

Don't be so sure the 3DES isn't already broken/breakable. Yeah, yeah, it's strong encryption yadda yadda etc... When a Nation State like the USA can give the NSA a blank check for lot's of MIPS then it's possible to break any cipher mebbe not the one time pad.. The Soviets used the one time pad for 17 years. Then one of their not so brights decided to re-use the pad. Big error, we had just recorded all 17 years worth of their government communications and went back at our leisure to catch up on their doings. As an aside:
With Senators Like Fritz Hollings (D) from Disney helping craft the laws you can be sure that the folks rights are in jeopardy... Thank Heaven that stiff is retiring..
