Re: DSL Modem Recommendation I have seen a few posts that say that the 677 will not achieve full 1024 upload speed, whereas the 678 will. Just another point to consider. Does anybody else have anything to say on this? I wouldn't like to achieve less speeds than I should, after all... I am trying to upgrade to a higher speed right now. |

Also, since Qwest does not support the 677, firmware for it may be harder to find than the 678. This may be moot since both are end-of-life but you can never rule out the possibility of a release to address a major bug. |

 | reply to Spetsnazgg While it is true that the 678 will train at 1024kb up it is somewhat limited for me as far as filtering (ACLs) goes.
I use an Cisco 827 which is very feature rich in terms of firewalling/filtering, NAT support and other advanced functions. Unfortunately it trains at 896kb up instead of 1024 kb.
Be aware that the more advanced devices (like the 827) cost more and are more (some say much more) difficult to configure (the cost of functionality is configuration complexity).
Pick a device which has the functionality you want at the price you want to pay.

 | reply to richpainter Does the actiontec not do IPSec (aka VPN) passthrough? My wife uses the Notel VPN client and it works fine through my Cisco with IPSec passthrough. I think Nortel also supports NAT-T for getting through a difficult router. Since that is just UDP traffic the actiontec shouldn't know what is going on.

 | reply to Spetsnazgg Is there a good, but cheap ($60 or less?), cisco modem?
If I were to buy the 678 off of Ebay, what things would I need.
The modem itself, the power cable, and is there anything else that is needed? I'm sure I can get my own Cat5, but is there anything else special that it requires? I just wanna cheeckc so I'm sure I don't get tricked. |

There is a "management" serial cable. You could make one yourself, but it'd be best to get one with the Cisco. It connects to a PC's serial port, and it lets you do the configuration. After initial setup, you can configure further through telnet (over ethernet), but at the start you'll want the serial cable. |

Re: DSL Modem Recommendation Here's a link to build your own management cable: »www.cisco.com/warp/public/794/600pinout.html
I made my own, it wasn't too hard. Make sure you upgrade to CBOS v2.4.6 firmware also: »www.qwest.com/dsl/customerservic···ups.html
Configuration of 678: »www.cisco.com/en/US/products/hw/···d70.html
Instead of reading the whole manual I just called qwest and they helped me configure the whole thing. |
