anon : I agree with hereto, its not a bittorrent problem per-se. Its actually 'multiple upstream TCP connections cause massive service degrataion'.

I see some people have had success it getting Rogers to fix whatever it was. Ill try plugging my SB5100 back in and see if its fixed for me.

BTW: You guys cant upgrade your firmware, nor will you find any firmware released publicly available on the web. It must be done from Rogers end or from a serial connection.
anon : For anyone having slow torrent issues - are you sure you aren't having the same issue as the "upload cripples downloads"? I have the problem where, when achieving my max upload, I can't even load web pages. There is a very big issue in some areas with bidirectional transfers - uploading kills downloading - big time. I notice this in my torrents too. BUT - when I first got extreme I could upload a torrent at 80 KB/s and still download at 300KB/s +. Try using an ftp program (I get the best speeds with cute ftp) to upload somewhere, then while uploading, try and download - you may realize this is not a "torrent" issue, but a "bi-directional transfer" issue - just a suggestion.... :)

Im going to write thier tech support guys a note detailing it and if they get back to me ill help them debug it.

I replaced the SB5100 with a modem containing a custom firmware with the MAC hardcoded equal to my SB100. After switching to the new modem everything worked perfectly. I guess having 75% of the global market share doesent neccesarily mean you have the best product. :p Multiple upstream TCP connections no longer caused severe degradation. I had some torrents going at a sum of 500K/s down and 80K/s upstream simultaneously (needed to leave a bit of upstream headroom for ACKs) while still maintaining 50-120ms ping latency to a site that would see 40-60ms under unloaded conditions.

Obviously, my solution wont work for you so I suggest you try the following:

a) get a different modem, the Webstar or Toshiba (if you shedule a tech to come visit you they should be able to do this)
b) get Rogers to change the firmware on your modem (good luck with this)
c) get DSL

anon : I have the exact same problem. I upgraded to extreme last Friday. Before the upgrade on the very same day I had no problems getting the full 40K upload and 100K+ download simultaneously. Now as soon as I use the connection in a bi-directional manner (i.e: bittorent) it all goes to hell, massive packet loss and very slow throughput (10K/s tops).

I looked at my modem diagnostics, its happy, SNR is all good, no errors in the logs. If not it can only be routing.

If none of this works I will have to call Rogers because but im not expecting much if anything. When I have 3-4 torrents going, my total speeds are around 5-20 kB up, and 5-20 kB down. So, there should be lots of bandwidth left. But, if I try to surf with this going on, I get ridiculously slow speeds, DNS resolution timeouts, etc. If I try a speed test without bittorrent running, I get good speeds (575/75). Let bittorrent run, with only the small amount of bandwidth used up as mentioned above (around 5-20 kB up, and 5-20 kB down), the speed test gives me 65/8!!! This is unacceptable.
KraftDinner9 : if 40 KB/s is your max upload speed, then that may be your problem right there. When you're surfing the web, and you click on a page, you're sending (uploading) a request to view that page and then they send you the appropriate info to view their page. This is constantly going on if you're a quick surfer. So if you're uploading at your max, then of course page loading slows to a crawl, the webpage you're trying to get to hasnt gotten your request yet! same with msn, it might think you've timed out because msn hasnt reported back to their servers in x time like it was supposed to, so they disconnect. So if you dont wanna upload at your max, either get a third-party program like netlimiter or if you're bittorrenting, get azureus, you can limit your global upload for torrents. Hope that helps.
