By splitting a large problem up into a lot of small jobs, which are then downloaded by paricpating members, it means that the projects can benefit from CPU power matching or exceeding that of the faster super-computers.
Typically the client will run in the background and make use of spare CPU cycles which would otherwise be wasted. Some projects have clients which can be run as a screensaver but are typically less efficient as processing time is taken to render the fancy graphics.
Most projects are flexible about how much time you donate so feel free to try a few out. The BBR teams allow you to work together and chat about the projects, and to compete with other teams in the stats tables. -- Team Ecology | Lifemapper | Climate Prediction | SETI |
