Ehh...

I'm sorry, but maybe I'm just not tech-savvy enough here, but I don't really understand how this works. Can someone explain to me in idiots terms what exactly the goal of this project is? It just seems very interesting...

To expand on Liontaur's post, you participate in a project
by downloading a client program to run on your PC.
By splitting a large problem up into a lot of small jobs,
which are then downloaded by paricpating members, it means
that the projects can benefit from CPU power matching or
exceeding that of the faster super-computers.

Typically the client will run in the background and make
use of spare CPU cycles which would otherwise be wasted.
Some projects have clients which can be run as a screensaver
but are typically less efficient as processing time is taken
to render the fancy graphics.

Most projects are flexible about how much time you donate
so feel free to try a few out. The BBR teams allow you to
work together and chat about the projects, and to compete
with other teams in the stats tables.
