Re: Ehh... To expand on Liontaur's post, you participate in a project by downloading a client program to run on your PC. By splitting a large problem up into a lot of small jobs, which are then downloaded by paricpating members, it means that the projects can benefit from CPU power matching or exceeding that of the faster super-computers.
Typically the client will run in the background and make use of spare CPU cycles which would otherwise be wasted. Some projects have clients which can be run as a screensaver but are typically less efficient as processing time is taken to render the fancy graphics.
