If you run the SETI CLI client via SETI Driver and select the "Idle" option, it ought to run cool enough. For me it runs up to 10C cooler than when set on Low.

For alternate DC projects, check out Folding@Home (Team Helix), which has an option to limit the max CPU used.
Alternatively Lifemapper (www.lifemapper.org) offers a fast turn around on workunits, which would make it a better choice for casual use.
The EcologyFund (Eco Clicks) project just means visiting a website daily to click on a handful of links and donate land (mainly rainforest) for free (paid for by the site sponsors). It helps the environment, and doesn't use any significant CPU, which makes it ideal to do alongside the other projects.
