 | Lafayette, LA Resident Point of View For a more local view lets turn to me
I have lived in Lafayette for a little over 7 years now. I am an IT manager and have dealing with both Cox (current customer, TV and Internet), Bellsouth (current customer, Phone System). I also worked with LUS (Lafayette Utility Systems) on several occasions.
It is true that Cox has done nothing but raise rates in this area every chance it gets. They also hold a monopoly on a good portion of the cites broadband because Bellsouth is so far behind on equipment upgrades that I can even get standard DSL access from my house in the middle of the city on the 3rd largest street in the parish(county). Both ISPs have major issues in this area.
I heard the actual survey and it was completely bias and meant to mis-lead people in the worst possible way. Cox is using scare tactics and mis-information in this community make no mistake.
Personally as a IT professional and a gamer I would love to see Fiber on my door step. I just don't see the people of Lafayette being able to see though the smoke and mirrors layed down by Cox and Bellsouth over the issue. The only thing that might help them is to do some campaigning based on the inherent problems with Cox and Bellsouth.
FYI: My current Cox bill for Basic Extended Cable and Internet is over $100 a month and I own my own equipment. Add on modem rental and its a good $120 a month. Even at $50 a month for Fiber over the curretly over populated and slow Cox Express system is not a hard choice to make. |

 | reply to LafayetteIT Today had a full page add by LUS in the paper with its Site FAQ listed and contact information for there office and the city council.
The FAQ are here. »www.lus.org/site.php?pageID=140
That State has also passed legislation that allows all of this to be possible. Information on that in the below links. »www.lus.org/site.php?pageID=108&newsID=133 »www.acadiananow.com/news/html/B7···A7.shtml
The city council meeting is set for June 8th. »www.theadvertiser.com/ontheagend···E3.shtml
It seems to me it will be up to the city council. Considering they went so far as to get new legislation to even consider the project I believe this to be a last ditch effort by Cox and with a little luck and common sense they will not succeed. |
