Re: The competition will be welcomed Yes it's funny how they have all these upgrades/trials going on and such yet the distance to CO is still a problem; maybe I should call up Earthlink to see what they get as an estimate, although I have a feeling it'll be around the same. 3Mbps I'll believe it when I see it Verizon, just like with the fiber -- Verizon 768k/128k @ 16,200 feet from CO.Activated June 13 2001.Now at 17,047 feet! |

lesopp join:2001-06-27 Land O Lakes, FL | I don't understand why they have to "test" it. Either it works or it doesn't. Unless I am wrong, the CLECs use the same DSLAM. In my area I qualify for the CLECs extreme packages 7.1 x 768, yet Verizon still only offers the standard crap. I am about half a mile from the Next Generation RT.

| Hey thanks for the info; maybe I'll be able to qualify for other provider's packages that are better than Verizon's. Of course you're probably under 15k from the CO; in that case I can only dream of faster speeds. I'm guessing they want to try and get things right the first time before going ahead with the real thing; as we all know the smallest of bugs could be missed even after numerous tests. -- Verizon 768k/128k @ 16,200 feet from CO.Activated June 13 2001.Now at 17,047 feet! |

 | reply to lesopp CLECs typically have their own DSLAM's (i.e. Covad). The reason for the testing is to determine what kind of affects 3Mbit connections will have on the ATM backbone. In some areas they may need upgrade parts of the backbone (switches, routers, fiber cross connects), to be able to realibly offer 3Mbit to the masses. It's much smarter to take this approach then to just start provisioning everyone at 3Mbit only to find out the network can't handle it. |

dude,
you are wrong about the clecs and vz sharing the same dslam. that would be a provisioning nightmare and a conflict of interest. vz would have access to clec dsl ports and vice versa... no way. those circuits are completely separate as per fcc rules. i am a field tech for a clec. we do not use the same dslam as vz. vz has it's own. the clec's have their own. the clec's eq is located in the 'colocation' area of the vz co. that area is entirely separate of the vz dsl eq and facilities. i know, i built some of these 'colo' facilities and installed alcatel asam 7300 series dslams in a few vz co's b4 vz laid me off in dec '02. i was a central office equipment installer at the time.
you are 100% correct about the planning to have an ass scratch... that's standard procedure in the telecom world; no matter whether it's a clec or a an ilec. |

| reply to lesopp clecs have their own equipment "colo'd" in the same co but they do not share vz equipment. the dsl signal goes from the colo cage to a split block on the frame where the clec signal is sent out on a vz pair (which may or not contain dialtone) hence UNE loops. -- I am not Herbert. |

Unless Verizon buys out Metumucil, I don't think we're going to see any fiber out of them in PA. But if the rumors are true that Verizon is going to offer DSL without requiring telegraph service, I might seriously consider it. Now I just need to wonder if I'm one of those lucky few in this state who can get DSL lol. -- Keep America Strong! Bush/Cheney 2004 |
