SBC and Verzion are headed in the right direction, and their profits show that it's not charity. Companies like Comcrap should take a lesson.
You might be able to speak for SBC but I can assure that Verizon is the one that has a lot to learn. They still have not expanded any of their DSL service areas one iota. They also have no plans on doing so. Comcast, on the other hand, has been making broadband available to its customers for years now, whereas Verizon still offers most of its customers nothing.
I'm taking the same view of another poster who mentioned this whole discussion is based on speculation. In my own experience, Verizon always talks big but never delivers. I won't be surprised when this speed increase fails to materialize.
I used to joke that Baghdad would get DSL service before most of my friends and myself in PA do... the scary part was that after talking to one of our troops there, I was correct.

Meanwhile the Comcast forum is FULL of people complaining of ONGOING problems (eg Chicagoland area) that Comcast won't fix.
As far as I have personally experienced this is what has been truth, not speculation.
Verizon cut my rate from $50 to $35, then to $30.
Verizon double my throughput from an abismal 768/128, to 1500/128, then to 1500/384.
Verizon started offering me MSN 9 Premium at No Charge
Free MLB, free McAfee blah blah all included with MSN 9.
Verizon has maintained it's news servers.
Verizon now moving to eliminate bundling requirements (while Comcast increases bundling requirements).
Verizon has changed it's distance qualification requirements expanding significantly the number of potential subscribers as well as those qualifying for 1.5Mb service via DSL.
Verizon now promotes zero networking restrictions.
Verizon offers FREE modems with their service, while Comcast charges for theirs...and if it doesn't work it's a $50 truckroll to TS it.
Verizon has zero install fee, Comcrap now charges $35.
As I'm not an SBC sub, I can only go by what my friend's experienced a little up north from me. SBC deployed multiple RTs expanding service. They cut their prices to the cheapest DSL around. They offer 3-6Mb service on the cheap. 1.5Mb service is just over 1/2 the cost of Comcrap.
Meanwhile...
Comcast increased my video rates 20% over 12 months with ZERO increase in programming
Comcast cut my ATTBi/MediaOne HSI upload speeds 15%.
Comcast instituted a 32% penalty for HSI customers that don't subscribe to CATV
Rather than face DSL on price, they increase download speeds, yay...all while sending out letters to those who violate magical invisible caps...which Comcast STILL refuses to say what they are.
Comcast continues to let ATTBi news servers wither while not offering an alternative (1GB from giganews is worthless).
Comcast now starting to charge those who OWN their modem the modem lease fee...now calling the lease payment we weren't paying because we own our modems a "discount" for owning our modems. Of course to this day, their Los Angeles pages show the $3 per month charge not as a discount but as a LEASE fee.
Comcast drops premium CATV programming from analog tiers forcing those subs to go digital...if they flee to DBS...they get a 32% penalty on their HSI bills.
As I see it...Verizon and SBC...here anyway are headed in the right direction, while nationwide Comcast is on an anti-consumer crusade of price increases and cuts in service.

Hey if it doesn't materialize I'll be disappointed. I have both COMCAST (for home) and a DSL line provided by my employer so I can work at home. My Verizon DSL line is slower but far more reliable and MSN premium makes it a real value. MSN premium supplies McAfee virus, firewall and MLB TV, etc. COMCAST finally broke down and provides McAfee but my guess is they only did that in an effort to reduce phone calls from neophytes who can't manage their machines.
In any event, if Verizon does match COMCAST speeds, I'll drop COMCAST like nuclear waste, add another phone line and put a second DSL connection in. The cost will be the same and the extra phone line will come for free. |
