 | What's with all the phone envy??? Great article!
It's interesting to see the comments given by all the posters here. Some want to have this "magical" technology that will somehow transform their lives for the better. Others can do without. The question that should be asked is not "Why don't we have the same technology as they do in Japan?" but rather "What is it that most North Americans are going to gain from this technology?" Frankly, business is run to make money. Believe me, if the telco's thought they could make more money off of us by upgrading their technology and selling us better phones, don't you think they'd be all for it? I believe that the telco's are giving us what we (the majority of us) are asking for which is affordable products and services. If we all were not satisfied with what we are getting, then why are we still buying? Isn't this how capitalism works?? In the end, the consumer is the one that drives any business and North American consumers are are nowhere near the same league as the Japanese consumer. This is why technological advances are more readily available in Japan as the Japanese are always accepting of new things that could improve their lives. We can all conjecture as to why this is but the simple fact is that the way Japanese culture works compared to North American culture is totally different.
On a side note, the developing technologies that appear every so often can create confusion with everyday consumers. Some technologies compete with others further confusing the issue (eg. GSM, TDMA, CDMA). One of the benefits of adopting technology is that if one technology gains wider acceptance than the other technologies, it will likely be more much expensive and/or just fade away (eg. IBM's Micro-Channel Architecture).
On driving with a cell phone, driving is not a right but a privilege. Not everyone has the necessary skill to operate a vehicle within the proper limits of safety and the law. To try to operate a vehicle with ANY distraction is careless use of a weapon.
