Authentication...?

I really don't know what "Enable IEEE 802.1x authentication for this network." means but I disabled it and it cured my random disconnects. I googled it and I really can't decide if I need it or not and why it is on by default. If someone can explain to me and maybe others who don't know it's located in the properties of the wireless network connection. I also tried it on two other laptops and so far it worked for them also.

My setup:
XP PRO SP1 (All Critical Updates installed)
Linksys BEFW11S4 v.3 Router 128bit WEP enabled (Current firmware)
SMC2632W 802.11b Wireless Card (Current drivers)
