Re: Lingo VOIP- $19.95 unlimited US, Canada, Western E

I've had little to no problems with the Lingo ATA. The one time I did have a problem I called tech support and got someone that knew what he was doing. An Indian tech in India, can you imagine that. My first inclination was that he didn't have a clue. I was wrong. Had the bias from Indian call centers in general and from posts as to Lingo tech support in particular. In this case maybe I was lucky. In anycase, he had me remove my ATA from behind my router and place it first in front of my router. That solved the issue but I do not feel that the ATA by itself does the job of bandwidth control great all the time. For some reason downloading headers from usenet just crushes it but to be fair it crushed it behind my router with bandwidth control as well. But that is not something I need to do that often and it can be done at odd hours anyway. I will probably place it behind the router again at some point as I like to be able to control the bandwidth using the various firmware hacks available for the WRT54G. But for now I'll leave it alone.
On their website the perferred method is to place your router behind their ATA but the instructions that come with the box have you place the ATA behind the router. Guess that is the simplest method but maybe not the best.
Anyway, so far I like the service. Some glitches from time to time which I attribute to growing pains but hey, for 19.95 and crank calls to Western Europe thrown in I'll live with em! BTW, happy to say I can fax without any problems.

Online now for 18 hours!!

Just thought I would post an update.
After some more time on the phone to Tech Support (here in the US), same guy I have been speaking to all along who has been helpful, we got an ATA online. Don't know which one old or new as we swapped them around a bit.
We logged into the ATA and set the MAC spoofing to my firewall then connected it straight to the cable modem, rebooted cable modem and ATA and got a VOIP light!! ANd the WAN light stayed on. Then disconnected put firewall back in place (Sonicwall TZ170) and connected the ATA to the DMZ port and surprise surprise it came back online.
While we were doing this Chris (the tech) found out that the MAC address in my account was wrong so not too sure what actually fixed the problem.
Anyway, I am up and running and have tried rebooting the ATA a couple of times and it is now coming back on just as quickly as the Vonage one does.

Chris did mention that some of the other Techs had come across the same problem as mine (WAN light not staying on and after time somehow blocking internet access) and they were looking further into it.

I'll give it some more time and do another update.

I have a SonicWall SoHo2, and it took forever to get it working with Lingo. It's pretty quirky. In my case, the connection was dropped after 11 minutes, I think because the SonicWall's NAT table would expire within that time, and Lingo's outbound proxy server couldn't find the ATA. I'm sure your problem is different, but make sure you stay on the line long enough to determine that you don't have this problem as well.

have had the service about a month. had a few issues with voicemail recording but was resolved after a week or so. overall am very impressed with voice quality and reliability. a good deal for the money especially since we use it to call germany everyday. tech support leaves a little to be desired however.

Re: Lingo VOIP- $19.95 unlimited US, Canada, Western E

I have been using Lingo for the past 2 months and this is my take.

1. Pricing - Excellent.
2. Customer Service - Good
3. Call quality - Fair
4. Calls Dropped or Phone our of service atleast twice a week.

I got tempted with the price, but looks like it needs to mature some more. I heard Vonage does a better service.

WHAT?! Looks like Lingo has discontinued the 3 months free offer! only 1 month free now... damn, was just about to sign up too

So the eternal question remains for me: Vonage or Lingo?? Anyone who can give a thoughtful analysis from experience? This forum seems to be the most versed in the subject after extensive googling. Appreciate the help

Re: Lingo VOIP- $19.95 unlimited US, Canada, Western E

I have recieved the lingo adapter, but didn't get a manual or anthing with it. The adapter was labled well enough on the back to let me guess which port is for phone, fax, WAN, LAN, and one called LINE. I have no way of adjusting the bandwidth, but did get a dial tone after I let it sit for a few minutes with everything plugged in. My Cable Modem is connected to my router WAN port, An open ethernet port on my router is connected to the WAN on the Lingo device. My phone is plugged into the phone 1 port. Device worked great at home. Very clear. Online adjustements can be made through the web page at lingo. I took it over to my brothers house and plugged into his cable modem. But it won't connect over there for some reason, but I'm going through several switches and firewalls over there, could be the problem.

Lingo - $19.95 unlimited US, Canada, W.Europe

Used Lingo for about a month.

Call quality varies call to call, but usually not bad.

Had a small problem when setting up not being able to connect to the internet, but was able to resolve with Customer Service.

Customer Service Good -- didn't have to wait more than a minute or two.

Not recommended for a primary phone, but cheap for a secondary.

Re: Lingo VOIP- $19.95 unlimited US, Canada, Western E

My mom signed up w/ lingo last month. Porting her local number took about 3 weeks. Sound quality is good, almost as good as POTS. She has some problems with disconnects, but her main trouble is incoming calls going directly to voice mail. Phone doesn't even ring once. This may happen for 10 minutes then it will start working again. Calls to tech support just have her reboot the ATA. Anyone else experiencing this??

How is it configured (router, etc.)?

azsimonsez

@148.155.x.x

It goes from cable modem to ATA to PC. No router involved. The speed is only 256k for the isp but I don't think that would matter.

Sorry, I don't think I can help. I had the problem at one time, but it was because my router was confusing Lingo's server about where to send the signaling packet.

By the way, what does the VoIP light do when she's having this problem? Is it staying on solid?

Also, check the web configuration to make sure you don't have anything forwarded to voicemail (that wouldn't explain why it works sometimes and other times not, however).

Finally, I assume you've checked the obvious, like the phone being off the hook . . .

@PHNX.QWEST.NET

The voip led is on when it happens, and the web email settings are normal.

I would like to get a password from lingo and log into the ata the next time I'm at her house. Maybe there is some odd setting in it.

At least it doesn't seem to be a widespread issue. I told her not to expect perfection w/ VoIP; it isn't as reliable as POTS (yet). But it kinda stinks to not receive calls for no apparent reason.

Thanks a lot for trying to help w/ this. I appreciate your responses.

I finally got my number completely ported. Sent the request on the night of September 3 and completely setup on October 4.

Anyway, one of the things we do, though, with this issue is that Lingo is configured if there is no answer to forward the phone to a cell phone. That covers issues where power is lost (until the cell phone battery dies) and/or broadband is down, and we're unreachable. Seems to work OK because I had it happen yesterday.

The "user" password is "ph3taswe." The only thing I can think of that might lead to this result is if you don't have the latest firmware. It should be V2.8.2.10b if it's the UTStarcom, or V1.5.4-RC4.1 if it's the AZACall.

Update on Service

Well its been a few months since finally getting things working. Overall call quality has been great. Calls within the US at the same quality as Vonage (been using that for close to 2 years) However, the call quality to Australia has been much better than Vonage's (minimal echos/ latency).
The BIG downside is Lingo's customer support. Have been trying to resolve a billing problem for the last month. Basically you send an email via thier web site get an answer from someone who obviously has only read part of the request, you reply via email and dont get a reply in our case to 2 followups, so you send it via the web site and get into the same loop.
Thier first level customer support appear to be turning requests over as fast as possible without any care for solving the problem. I could be a lot more 'direct'
Also for the last few days you cannot access the invoice details from the web site and again support response is "...charges on your invoice are for Basic Plan and calls.." DUHH!! but what calls? Especially as the Invoice is greater than $10 over the Basic Plan cost.

If they could provide the level of support we recieved from Vonage for the last few years then I reckon they would have a winner.

So if you dont need support or talk to customer service then its a good service. Though I will not be reccomending them to any friends!!
