Re: Lingo VOIP- $19.95 unlimited US, Canada, Weste

Something very confusing on their site
»www.lingo.com/guWeb/com/primuste···_911.jsp
The first paragraphs says routing to PSAP, while the second says routing to "local police station".
I thought 911 operation and local police are not the same thing..So Where on earth will they be routed?
Are they offering true E911 here? If yes, that'll be the industry first.

"Emergency Calling Service

It's safety first with Lingo!
When there's an emergency, you need to be connected fast real fast. Lingo's Emergency Calling Service dialing instantly routes your call from our network to the Public Safety Answering Point (PSAP) in your area. As a Lingo customer, you're automatically enrolled in the service.

It's important to note that Emergency Calling Service dialing will automatically route your call to the local police station for the address on file, not your temporary location. If you're moving your Lingo Service to a different location, you need to notify Lingo in advance of the new location so we can activate the Emergency Calling Service"

Local police station sounds like they are simplifying. IN many smaller communities with independent police (not county police, eg), there is only one station,a nd that is the 911 call taker.

Okay but is Phonom VOIP actually portable? Do they provide a VOIP CPE that you can remove from their network and stick on someone else's maybe half way around the world?

AFAIK Phonom provides DSL and VOIP in a bundle. If you can't move the VOIP adapter then there is no reason for e911 not to be an easy implementation.

I had Phonom (with the DSL bundle) but at one point during troubleshooting the tech told me I could try the ATA using my other ISP connection (non-phonom DSL) which surprised me. I never tried it but the implication was that it would work. I thought they offered VOIP-only service as well as bundled service.

BTW I would not recommend Phonom, I found them to be very non-responsive (for technical and non-technical issues) and was completely disappointed that they did not take advantage of the fact that they were providing both VOIP and the ISP connection it ran over - in other words as far as I could tell they did not do any QoS, traffic shaping, prioritization in their network. Anytime I used my Phonom DSL connection for real traffic the voip voice quality went in the crapper. They had the perfect opportunity to do QoS and didn't....pitty.

No they don't have 911 or E911 yet.
This is in the terms-of-service:

"A. Non-Availability of Traditional 911 or E911 Dialing Service:
You acknowledge and understand that the Service does NOT support traditional 911 or E911 access to emergency services. Primus offers a limited Emergency Calling Service available only on Primus Devices as described herein, but you acknowledge and understand that such Emergency Calling Service dialing is different in a number of important ways from traditional 911 services, as described herein. Primus Emergency Calling Service dialing is only available on Primus-certified Devices or Equipment. You agree to inform any household residents, guests and other third persons who may be present at the physical location where you utilize the Service as to the non-availability of traditional 911 or E911 dialing from your Primus Service and Device(s). If you activate Primus Emergency Calling Service dialing, you agree to inform any household residents, guests and other third persons who may be present at the physical location where you utilize the Service as to the important differences and limitations of Primus Emergency Calling Service dialing as compared with traditional 911 or E911 dialing, as set forth in this Agreement."

my service interruption

After 18 hours, the VOIP light on the device lit and started working again. Inexplicable. Everything else on my network worked fine in the interim. Perhaps they were updating or working on my complaint.

Still, they've done nothing to correct their error of assigning me a phone number to a long distance exchange I didn't request.

POTS is looking better and better all the time.

I've had lingo for about a week now. I had to set Lingo's ATA to be the DMZ on my D-Link router. That got it working. It was working fine, though audio was fairly low (with two different phones) and really not so great.

I had simultaneous ring turned on, so it'd ring to my cell also. It turns out that Lingo had an outage for about 12 hours (undocumented / not acknowledged by Lingo). When you'd call into the VOIP number from a POTS/cell phone, you'd get a fast busy. It's obvious that the problem wasn't with my internet or anything else since the phone should ring through to my cell always.

I had a support ticket open (spoke to one of their CSRs in India). They were supposed to get back to me within 24-48 hours. I called 24 hours later and asked to speak to a tech and they said that I couldn't. I asked to speak with a manager and they said that I couldn't. They said that someone would call me within 24 hours. I still haven't heard from anyone almost 5 days later.

Lingo features and pricing are great. Their support is terrible, and so far the service has been less than reliable.

I'd also be anxious to see three way calling active, and a way for me to change the time zone on caller ID and voicemail messages.

Anyone think I should wait it out, or simply request a refund and go to Packet8?

their support is indeed horrible. but I would give them at least 30 days trial..
Once their straighten things out, hopefully we won't have to call their support anymore...It's a waste of time..

I'm glad someone else acknowledged a service interruption. It wasn't just me.

I'm very close to cancelling this whole thing. Their customer service stinks. They are nice enough to you, but they don't do anything. If I don't see some action really damn quickly, I'm packing up the mess and sending it back and putting a stop on the credit card payment.

As I see it, we don't have a contract because they still haven't gotten it right. Why would I want a number in a city where nobody I know lives?

Does anyone have a direct number to a person who can help me? I'm tiring of talking to outsourced CSRs.
