Like Skype but uses SIP

I am in the middle of designing a new Peer to Peer SIP softphone / videophone I have fondly named peerSee. I will probably be buying a great deal of the technology from Xten for this application but this project is not an Xten initiative, it is my own. The last time around I received some great feedback when I asked a forum for input on features so I thought I would try it here again.

Here are the features I have already decided to include in peerSee:

:Þ SIMPLE based IM with Enhanced Features
:Þ IM AudioToons [Canned audio clips]
:Þ SIP VoIP with Enhanced Features
:Þ SIP Video Conferencing and Video Streaming
:Þ Multiple Platforms [Windows, MAC OSX, Pocket PC, Linux]
:Þ Intuitive Design with "Drag and Drop" Controls
:Þ Audio and Video Tuner
:Þ Peer to Peer based Presence Mgt.
:Þ File Transfer
:Þ Acoustic Echo Cancellation
:Þ Audio and Video QOS Controls
:Þ Auto-configuration
:Þ Encryption
:Þ NAT and Firewall Traversal
:Þ Direct Cellular Interconnect Capability
:Þ SMS Messaging
:Þ SIP SPAM Filters
:Þ SDK/APIs for Windows, MAC, Linux

If you have some ideas for features you would like to see included in peerSee's launch in the fall, I would be grateful if you posted them here. If you prefer you can also email me: erik@sipthat.com.

This is super cool..

Now that's the open source spirit.
The only good thing about skype that I think should be borrowed from is NAT and Firewall Traversal.
SIP plus simple and universal NAT traversal will be invincible.

As for features, I think they are pretty much all covered.
And now File Transfer is planned. so how about "white board" and something like "remote desktop"
Best of luck

cheers,

A distinctive feature of Skype is that it uses wideband codec that is resilient to packet loss.

Is that part of your plans?

An open API freely available so those with usb phones can quickly integrate their products.

Remote desktop is part of the road-map but I think that would become part of an add-on module later.

Cheers,
Erik

Huh? Where did he say it was open source, or even free of cost?

Maybe not open source, but at least we can input our thoughts for this software

Taking another look, yes, I was under the incorrect impression that he intended to build something open source to rival skykpe.
anyway, I hope SIP as an open standard will win over the proprietary skype in the end.
cheers

Me too, although Jabber doesn't seem to be getting much traction against AIM and ICQ...

In the business world, however, SIP rocks the casbah.

It may even end up as open source. At the very least there will be low level APIs in various languages and platforms.

Sadly I forgot the most important point, this WILL be a free application.

Uh huh, just like Kazaa right I am very conscious of SIP SPAM, regular SPAM, adware, spybots etc. I am taking steps to make sure that peerSee is protected from this. It's one of the largest concerns right now in the SIP space. There is some info on my blog about identity security which relates to the same thing: »sipthat.com
