It all starts with the dual internet connections, The Qwest connection is there as a backup in case the Comcast goes down, and PFSense is setup to use that connection only if it has no connection through Comcast.

We then move to the PFSense firewall, which is an old Gateway performance 1300, with an Intel Pentium 4 423 pin @ 1.3GHz, with 384 MB of RDRAM (2x128MB and 2x64MB = 384MB), and Three Linksys Gigabit ethernet cards, 2 WAN and 1 LAN. The unit maxes out at 250-260 MBytes/sec with 500 open connections. This also handles the DNS redirects, VPN using IPSec and bandwidth monitoring. The DHCP server will not assign an unknown device an IP, every MAC must be on record for an IP, see wireless for more info.

Then we have the Netgear 24-port un-managed gigabit switch.

The backup file server just has a clone of the very important files from the main server and has fail over for when the main server is offline.

The game server hosts games like Team Fortress 2 (4 different rooms at 32 people each), battlefield 2, gary's mod, or anything else we feel like playing. This is an Intel Core 2 Duo at 1.83GHz with 3GB of DDR2 RAM, running windows server 2003 standard edition. (yes, that is more than enough CPU power to run the server side of every game I have thrown at it)

The main server has 5 1TB drives in a RAID5 (using a hardware RAID card), giving me a total of 3.63TB of storage. This server also hosts the FTP, HTTP, TeamSpeak servers. This is an Intel Core 2 Duo @ 2.4GHz w/ 4GB DDR2 running Windows Server 2008 64-Bit.

The gaming desktop is my main machine, and has the Intel Core 2 Extreme Quad Q6850 OC'ed from 3GHz to 3.4GHz, with 4GB DDR2, a DFI motherboard with the x48 chipset, an ATI 4870X2 graphics card, 1kW PSU, 300GB 10kRPM HDD, dual 24" LG monitors, and Win 7 64-Bit.

The Sony is just my laptop for when I am away, it has the hybrid-graphics system, so a didcated graphics card for gaming on the road, and an integrated graphics card for power savings. It has a 2.1GHz Core 2 Duo mobile, 4GB DDR2, 320GB 5400 RPM HDD, 13.3" LED backlit LCD, and weighs 3.3 lbs w/ battery.

Popcorn Hour A-110 multimedia set-top box in the bedroom.

Two WRT54G to cover the home as its a long home, using WPA2 w/ AES+TKIP and 22 character key, hidden SSID, MAC auth.

Two laptops in the other office, with the network printer.

On the main 55" 1080p HDTV we have the DirecTV receiver, XBox 360 and Popcorn Hour C-200, all using HDMI and TOS Link to the TV/Receiver for 5.1 audio.

The switch is - naturally - managed.
My workstation and my wife's laptop is IPv6 enabled also; inet-rtr sends router advertisements.

Internet connection is very stable and latency times are minimal (10 ms inside Finland).

I subscribe to FIOS 20/5 Internet service and Extreme HD TV service.

The main router is Verizon's Actiontec MI-424WR Rev. E router, which has 4 10/100 LAN ports, a 10/100 WAN port (unused here), a Coax (dual WAN/LAN) port, and 802.11g WiFi. The WiFi is configured for 802.11g only mode and uses WPA2 encryption. It runs DHCP for the set top box and the Eee (required for compatibility with another network). Everything else has it's own static connection. The PS3 is the oddball among WiFi + Ethernet capable appliances: it used the same MAC address for both (and thus gets only one IP regardless of connection type).

The secondary routers are configured as dumb switches and wireless access points. The D-Link has 4 10/100 ports and runs 802.11n only with WPA2-AES encryption. The Netgear has 4 10/100 ports and runs 802.11b only with WPA-TKIP (and has to downgrade to WEP in the unlikely event that the DS is online).

STEVE (XP Pro) is my home-built Athlon 64 X2 4400+, connected to the network via onboard Ethernet, to the USB printer (shared via XP), and to TV coax via a PCI-E QAM tuner card. Output to 720p Westinghouse 32" (and desktop LCD not shown).

LEAH (XP MCE) is the teenager's HP Pavillion Slimline connected via 802.11g (with a normally unused Ethernet port). She also has the iPod Touch and the Eee (XP ULCPC) that connect via 802.11g. (Eee also has a normally unused Ethernet port.)

PADME (Vista Home Premium) is the soon-to-be-wife's HP Pavillion Laptop, connected via 802.11n (and the normally unused Ethernet).

SATELLITE (XP Home) is the old laptop (relegated to travel hotel use) that connects via 802.11g (and the normally unused Ethernet).

We share the PSP (802.11g), the Wii (802.11b network and Composite video output), the PS2 (not networked, S-Video output; can't give up Katamari Damacy), and the PS3 (Ethernet/HDMI). The PS3 has 802.11g capability as well.

Like many I ported my home phone to a third line for the house. Also, using the same cell phone for data, I've attached a network diagram. So I was able to reduce my costs by using a Motorola V9 3G phone that I was using already and I had updated my personal phone to a smartphone. That V9 powers both the whole house phone system and the internet...all for an extra 30 bucks per month on my cell phone bill( 3 lines, 3 data plans aka medianet unlimited). I'm projected to save over $1000 this year even after start up costs.

The internet comes in through my Comcast connection, which is a Motorola SB5100 on the 8800/768 plan. Then it goes to a pfSense computer (specs below). This handles everything like DHCP, DNS, PPTP VPN, Firewall, NAT, etc... Next up is the Netgear JGS524 24 Port Gigabit switch. I picked this up from a local CompUSA durring their close out sale, paid about $120 for a $200 switch :D

The Server (see below for specs) houses all of my backup and media, it also has the only printer in the house, which is a HP Laserjet 6L.

From the switch it spans out to the rest of the network. The AP is a WRT54GS that is used to connect my two Windows Mobile phones. Its running DD-WRT.

My Desk has my gaming desktop and my laptop, it has a gigabit switch.

My Girlfriend's desk has her gaming desktop, her laptop and sometimes my friends laptop is connected to her switch. The extra desk is next to hers.

The family room has our 55" 1080p tv w/ 5.1 surround. For this I build a HTPC that can play BluRay and HD DVD. I also have a XBox 360. The HTPC can play files from the server on the big TV :D

The bedroom has a regular XBox, and a modded XBox running XBox media center. Its used to pull content from the server.

In the event of one ISP failing, all the systems have the opposite gateway configured as a backup.

I intend to buy a load-balancing router in a month or two that will hopefully split the outgoing requests and handle failover for me. That way if I'm requesting a webpage with 11 images, the way I understand it is that both connections would send out six of the requests... The VMWare servers are running Debian Server install as the host OS ~ 200MB footprint. On top of that, I have a Windows Server 2003 R2 PDC and BDC, Postfix mail server, FreeNAS servers, and test linux/Windows 2003 servers.

The primary VMWare server is a 3.4GHz HT P4 CPU, 4GB of DDR2 ram, 2x320GB RAID 1.

The secondary VMWare server is a 3.0GHz HT P4 CPU, 2GB of DDR ram and 2x250 RAID 1.

The demand on these servers are minimal, thus I haven't yet had the need to go to Core 2 type hardware or even SCSI/SAN servers with VMWare ESX.

But then again, I'm no regular Joe. I just might end up making my network more complex than ever. I still hope to add a website and possibly other stuff, although I'd probably just install it on the Linux server.

By the way, I made my diagram in MS Paint. It's crude, but I don't have a copy of Visio. Plus Visio is Microsoft and apart from Windows I don't use anything Microsoft if I can help it.

-Versions of Windows going back to 95, versions of OS X going back to 10.2
-Several worms/trojans/viruses my brother downloaded :p
-Bellsouth becoming AT&T again
-Tens of thousands of dollars spent at Amazon, Newegg, Apple, Thinkgeek and eBay just to name a few
-Beyond billions of bytes sent to/from CNN.com, Google, World of Warcraft, DSLReports, eBay, Weather.com and countless others.

This is still ongoing (been ongoing since March, but had to stop because of school), but it will soon be done and implemented this way. The only hurdle is learning pf for the Ultra 1, since it will be acting as my firewall, but I got too many things getting in my way (working 2 jobs now). I agree that every single server I have running can run off the ESX server, but where is the fun in that ;)

Only thing that bugs me is Earth being connected to 2 different networks. The 'all in one' server hosts a small web site and an email server (amongst other things) hence the need for redundancy. This also accommodates a v-small business service. A little elaborate perhaps but functional never the less. We became frustrated with free email services that were just plain unreliable.

Nice too in that the server dynamically allocates a path for any given web request based upon the available latency. As such optimised browsing and once one link reaches 100% utilisation, traffic overflows onto the secondary link. Cisco's implementation of this technology is HSRP (might as well be VRRP as well). I use the OpenBSD groups version of it, CARP. the router on the inside routes between all the internal networks (one for routers, one for the LAN, and one for wireless). The external routers sole job is maintaining the cable connection. The external is a Cisco 2502, which is incredibly stable. I've never had it drop the connection for any reason, and whenever the connection goes out is always reestablishes instantly. I hope that answers all your questions :D.

The core routers and the firewall's use OSPF to distribute routes to one another. The firewalls have a VRRP (CARP) interface on the side with the edge router for High Availability. On the side facing the Core Router as they use OSPF they can't use VRRP (CARP) so I use routing metrics to provide high availability. All the VLAN's are on the same Cisco Cat 2950.

Planned Upgrades:

I have a Cisco 2610 and Ethernet module on order to replace the 2500. Currently the 2500 only does static 1-to-1 NAT and not much more, it was mainly put in place so I could place more with IOS. I have more plans for the 2610....

The Experimental OSPF Router is an OpenBSD box with a couple NICs that is going to be the backup for the Core Router until I get my Cisco 2620 with multiple ethernet ports on it. OSPF metrics will be used to provide failover.

Basically I used to have 3 cables running into my bedroom (rack is in another room) so I decided to get a 3rd switch and trunk 3 VLANs into my room, thus removing 2 cables. But I also needed some switch ports for my lab.

Not shown on this diagram is my lab equipment (theres too many). Plus it doesnt remain in any one configuration for long, so theres no real point putting it on there.

bne-sw2 handles purely VLAN 4, which is my internal/private VLAN. Its not capable of VLAN trunking, so I dont particularly have any other use for it (but I can setup multiple VLANs on it if I want to break it up into more logical switches).

The icons are all hand drawn, I have a big document of all sorts of Cisco routers and switches which I use when designing network layouts. Its a bit teidious doing it through MS paint, but ive been doing it for long enough I can fly through it :)

Seems like corporate marketing that I fell for. Though I was getting a 10mbit internet pipe and a PRI but got a PRI + Internet riding one 10mbit circuit.

Just got the two Cisco 2501 and the 1900 Switch Aug 8, and finished setting them up last night. These are the start of my Cisco lab.

The Linksys 5 port switch is mainly used for when other people come over for lan partys. Because the WRT54G has 4 switched ports built in.

The 24 port hub was just used when I filled up the router and the 5 port switch, but now that I have the 1900 switch, this may be taken off of the network.

Really? I just remember that back a few years ago, my SB3100 would not go past 4.5mbps downstream. My friend brought over his Terayon and that modem was reaching 9+ mbps.

IBM Netfinity 7000 M10 server, Quad Xeon 400 with 1.5 gigs of ram, 4 36 gig drives etc. Sun Enterprise Ultra 2 (Dual 300mhz, 1 gig of ram, 2 x 9 gig scsi)

Dlink 10/100 connected to a Surecom Gigabit Switch at the other end of the room.
from Surecom it goes to the Linksys router (wireless)
it also goes to my main pc (gigabit) Athlon 64 3200+ 1 gig of ram 2x120gig SATA drives. I plug the laptop in once in a while when its not using Wireless to Sync my Music and ohter files (computer came with giabit and so did laptop may as well take advantage of it :)

I have 2 internet connections becuase I basicly got x months free with one of them, and I get huge discount on the other threw my employer so I just kept them both, all I need to do is change the default gateway on any pc to change the network connection.

I will be moving in a month from now so things will change a bit. I am still drawing out how I will set things up. I will post pictures too once I am moved and have it all set up nice and pretty.

If I didn't have the cable going between the routers, I wasn't able to share resources because I am connecting to the switch via the WAN ports.

On each computer, I had to set a static IP and gateway, so it would go through the correct router, and not try going through another.

It's probably not the best design, but it works well.

His setup work fine, Two routers connect to two different internet connections just servers as two different gateways on the same subnets, for example Router1 = 192.168.0.1 and router2 = 192.168.0.250, if you have the gateways entry on the PC, then it should work with out a problem. You are correct there isn't any failover which I don't want for the time being. as you can see there are only 2 machines using dsl my laptop and my personal machine reason being is so I can run tests on the cable side (basically so i look like i am outside) My laptop has an external IP meaning a public ip address not a private don't mean to confuse anyone on that. I get to 2 static IPs from speakeasy so I use one for the laptop and the other one for the watchguard device. I have 2 DHCP servers in case one goes down its basically called the 50/50 split. I have one DHCP server running from 10.0.0.5-10 and the other one is 10.0.0.11-16 anything on DHCP is pulling from the 10.0.0.5-10(RR Cable) with the exception of my personal machine it has a static dhcp assignment based on the mac address from the watchguard device. There is only one server which is my Dell 4100. My laptop is getting traffic from the dsl connection using my ISP's DNS and subnet.

UFO: Dell Inspiron 2100 laptop, not used for much
Poison: My kick-a** gaming system
GNR: An extra computer downstairs for guests to use, NO ONE touches my gaming machine :)
ACDC: Doesn't do much anymore, I had been using it to study for MCSE exams.
Tesla: Same as ACDC, except it actually serves a purpose, it's a print server
Whitesnake: My sister's computer, destined to be rebuilt

Nothing overly fancy, but it gets the job done, and the 16-port switch has plenty of extra room for LAN parties :D

It's basically just seven physical machines with barebones OS installs and a bunch of virtual ones which provide all the functionality. I'm liking how this incarnation has turned out using the VMs and all... So nice to be able to easily pause, undo, backup, etc. There's a sort of cool feeling of modularity to the network, almost like plugging and playing PCI-or-whatever cards... only these are entire chunks of the network. If I had more licenses, I would have liked to have made make it even more granular (e.g. one tiny VM for DNS, another for DHCP, another for WINS, etc.)

Interesting how this evolved from even the version just previous...

I use the Buffalo wireless network (54g) for video streaming to and from my ReplayTV units (one in the bedroom and the other in the family room). I have it physically segmented so that none of that streaming traffic goes over my regular network/switch. I do have the buffalo unit wired to my LAN Switch when the ReplayTV units need to phone home each day. This a;so allows me to copy off recorded shows to my desktop and burn them to DVD when needed.

I use the Intel WAP for all normal wireless LAN/WAN traffic for the listed devices (Laptops and PocketPC's).

They have different ESSID's and WEP Key's and of course on different channels, no problems or conflicts!

Heh, I guess it automatically posted it, here's the scoop

All server stuff will be rackmounted in my half-height (20u) rack I got. It will go from the interweb *snicker* to the 1u firewall that I should be getting all the parts to within the next week or so. Both the dmz and lan will plug into the same 24 port switch. I'll have it as 2 vlans with the top being dmz and bottom being lan. I'm going to transfer my two servers into rack mount cases (still have to get them) and will be on the dmz for security. I want to have a seperate linux server on the lan for a file server eventually. Although once I put all my cisco stuff in the rack, I won't have enough room for another 4u server :). The rest of it is pretty much like above. This time I included all the computer names. I will probably change the names of the servers when I move them, especially sofiya. seemed to sound cool when I first picked it, but not now :)

Here's the network in our student flat. A litte explanation along with the picture.

The number of Mr. BlueGuys are the number of users in the network.

We are all studying at the same school for our engineer degree (4 years, + if you want, another 2 or 3 years). The most of them are studying for structural engineering. (5), one is studying elektro-mechanics engineering, one elektronics, and i'm studying elektronics-ICT.

Allthough the network looks overkill (wich is good ofcourse ;) ), it's still heavily used and seems to be stable for over 5 months now. Although it's vacation.. we still hang around here. I usually make a visit to my parents in the weekend to eat a normal meal at least once a week :D

Although some may think i can leave out some computers.. it always turned out to be handy to have them. Ofcourse are some computers more used then others.

All servers run hardened gentoo except for the print- and webserver. They run normal gentoo with 2.6 kernel. The SAN also has a 2.6 kernel (mm-sources).

The laptops are Centrino's. The workstations varies from 1.5 - 2.5 Ghz. Intel and AMD mixed. I have a Centrino laptop (Compaq X1005EA) and a HP D530 (ultra slim desktop). I like silence in my flatroom.

The wifi is ofcourse encrypted. I was suprised of the signal strength. It's mostly good to excellent in our flats, even with a couple walls between it (wood).

The local webserver show the pages where the "users" can check their mail on, see if i'm working on stuff (and wich explains some stuff suddenly stops working :D)

The SAN isn't really a SAN, but it's a mini computer with a RAID 1, for file backups wich "users" choose theirself.

Last but not least.. the proxy server.. 9 users is a lot of traffic.. so to keep bandwith usage low.. caching helps a bit (especially when my structural engineering friends make their "homework".. they usually browse the same pages ;) ).
