bklynitePremium join:2001-03-18 Brooklyn, NY | Anyone Remember? Hey, does anyone else remember X-Band? That modem addon was the first real multiplayer addon for a console as far as I know. Man it was a blast to play.
Anyone else ever use it on a Sega Genesis? -- W-Train.com Webmaster | »www.bklynite.com | I ♥ NY |

 | yea, i remember that xband thing, it was a pretty sweet idea, and ran fairly well.
If only one of the current console systems bought the rights to use the older rom's on their system, and somehow market into a broadband version of the xband, it might be cool. Granted, with the current amount of games saturating the market, and the terms quantity and quality are indifferent, its hard for things like this to jump out.
Wouldn't mind being able to play syndicate wars or shadowrun, river city ransom, etc on the newer systems without having to modchip the damn thing.
But oh well, people can dream right? |

 | reply to bklynite Hell Nintendo isn't going anywhere anytime soon. Granted they did screw up a bit w/ the GC, but overall, it's a learning process. They may not take back the undisputed champion title, but they will not go quietly into the night.
As for "My console is better than yours" ....I have them all. I still fire up my Sega Saturn and play Guardian Heroes every now and again. NBA Live 2000 still plays in my PlayStation (not that mini PSONE, the Original PS). And NBA JAM is still fun on my Super Nintendo. Point is, I plan to get them all and enjoy them. |

momus_98 join:2002-09-10 Pflugerville, TX kudos:1 | reply to bklynite Sega was always at the forefront of gaming consoles. They were the first to come out with 16-bit processing (the Genesis) while Nintendo was still cranking out the tired 8-bit NES. They offered a 32-bit drop-in module for the Genesis and were the first to dabble in CD-ROM technology (also for the Genesis). Granted, these peripherals didn't always work right; the CD-ROM was prone to locking up & there weren't many games for the 32-bit module. But it was still cutting edge for its time.
Anyone remember the Game Gear? It runs circles around the Game Boy Advance. The GBA is a piece of crap. One tiny mono speaker, compared to the decent stereo speakers of the Game Gear. Not to mention the headphone outputs (which could be used for powered mini-speakers for even better sound) & the add-on TV tuner. The GBA looks so flimsy while the Game Gear was solid and well built.
Finally, let's not forget the Saturn with its 64-bit processor and built-in modem for online play & Internet access. (Another first, if I'm not mistaken). And the Dreamcast, the first 128-bit processor, also with a built in modem. Sega was doing it online before Sony & Microsoft even knew what gaming consoles were.
Sega has always been ahead of its time, and it's a shame that people seemed to flock to the cheaper (and more mediocre) Nintendo junk. It seems appropriate that the PS-2 & X-Box have stolen Nintendo's thunder. I'm glad to see they're in 3rd place. |

::shrugs:: everyone's entitled to their opinion, but I'll disagree. GBA is smaller for easier portability. Has a better battery life for longer play on the road. My game gear only had one tiny speaker not two. While the GBA looks flimsy, it is certainly not. In my experience it was more hardy than my game gear. Now... if you were meaning to compare it to the GB, then I agree.
As for the saturn, can you call two 32-bit processors a 64-bit processor... than again, that debate has been about since the release of the Saturn. |

 | reply to momus_98 I love it when people actually try to compare the GBA to a sega Game Gear. Sorry, But they are no where near the same. Game Gear - 8-bit processor - 4,096 Colors Available - 32 Colors on Screen at a time - 160 x 146 pixels max resolution
Source = »www.vgmuseum.com/systems/gg/ Game Boy Advance - 32-bit processor - 32,768 Colors Available - 511 Colors on Screen at a time - 240 x 160 pixels max resolution

May I stop or would you like me to put you down like ol'yeller out back? |

Well, you are right. I was venting and during the course of that rant, my memory of the venerable Game Gear was faulty. Please forgive.
Also, allow me to clarify my statement about the GBA looking flimsy. I was referring to the GBA SP, with its clamshell design. In addition, what really sparked my ire about all this was an article in FHM magazine profiling a special edition GBA SP to be released by Nintendo featuring the grey, black & red color scheme of the original Game Boy. It may look 'retro' to some, but that color scheme just makes the GBA SP look clunky.
And to the statement made by gfpaperboy22 referring to the specs of the GG vs. GBA, yeah, I'll concede that point. But the Game Gear was cutting edge for its time. The original GB pales in comparison. I should've said that in the first place. |

 | reply to momus_98 Right, Game Gear, I have that. I can live in the damn thing its so big. And what good is a CD-ROM if it locks up. Oh, and Sega is definitely ahead with the 128bit processor. Being it that GCN and XBox are 32bit, Sega pwns. Do you even KNOW what 128bit means? Its the amount of data that the processor can handle. If Dreamcast was 128bit, why did the characters in Shenmue 2 randomly appear? Was it because the game was so big the CPU couldnt handle it? Yep, it was. Dreamcast was 64bit my friend. People, ignorant people, believe 128bit means graphics. Since Dreamcast had better graphics than N64, it was [sarcasm] OBVIOUSLY [/sarcasm] 128bit. Oh, and I dont know what you do with your GBA:SP, but mine is solidly built. The only place where it isnt solid is the hinge, and well, hinges arent supposed to be solid.
If Sega was at the "forefront" of technology, why are they dead-smack in the center of software now?
And to each their own, I dont think GCN is junk, but I think Xbox is. I bought it last week only for it to break on me a few days later. I played it three times, about an hour each time. And sales mean jack. There only used by ignorant fanboys that love to suck Bill Gates' nipple. Zelda > Ninja Gaiden. Halo sucks, its a ripoff of UT, HL and Doom. But thats what I think, but who the hell cares? I own a GCN remember? |
