Re: Game copy protection installs hidden software!

I'm sure we all realize this; but have you noticed that in most EULAs there is a section that allows you to make a copy of the software for archival/backup purposes.

However, manufacturers are putting copy-protection on their CDs preventing the above from being done easily.

I understand the desire to protect their creations, but they're keeping the consumers of their product from exercising their privelege to make a backup copy.

Yes they are. They are falling all over themselves to prevent that...and then some.

Re: Game copy protection installs hidden software!

Greetings,

Does this driver get installed on Windows 2000 or XP machines when the person is logged on as a Power User or User account?

From my understanding, drivers can only be installed when you're logged in as an administrator.

from what I've seen actual installation happen upon next reboot..
but I'm not sure if
1) regular user has rights to add items into start up
2) i think installer might refuse to continue unless it's run with admin rights(so it can wreck your system w/o limits;))

Holy Crap... While looking through the list, I noticed "Curse: The Eye of Isis" was there, which I have. I ran this game maybe twice - the controls absolutely *suck* on this game, which prevented me from ever going back and playing it.

I got the removal tool and uninstalled it.

Anyone notice the Adventure Company forums are down and are due to be back up "next week" as a "read only" forum, akin to a knowledgebase?

I guess the attitudes of people on there must have gotten a bit too "upsetting" for the company?

I have "Riddle of the Sphinx II" sitting here, never installed, and I'm reluctant to install it now, since it's from the same company.

Sheesh.

I actually decided to write to codemasters about my concerns with the starforce protection software. I listed the concerns brought up in this forum and on the broadbandreports main page post. Here's the reply I got back.

Thank you for submitting your recent request to Codemasters Customer Services concerning Toca Race Driver 2.

Thank you for your comments. Unfortunately the article you quote is almost entirely incorrect.

StarForce is completely removable using a tool provided by the software suppliers themselves (not developed by users), does not cause CD-R errors, does not slow CD read times, and does not cause device conflicts. The drivers are not resident in memory and are only active when a protected game
is running.

Installing drivers on to a system when installing software is no worse than installing dll files in your Windows\system folder - which just about every piece of software does. However, due to user concern, we are looking at giving the option of removing the drivers when uninstalling the software.

There are no privacy implications of StarForce as no information is sent unless the user chooses to generate a report - which then sends the same information contained in the msinfo32 report - a standard Windows tool. Stating that "The software also collects system information etc." implies that it does so secretly, which is not true. You might just as well complain about the msinfo32 tool which is a component of Windows.

The only reason that anyone is kicking up such a fuss about StarForce is that it does its job, and hackers and people who have been waiting three months for a crack are very frustrated by this.

Kind regards
Rob
Codemasters Customer Services
For now, I'm boycotting all the companies that use the starforce protection scheme. They are treating their customers like criminals, and I intend to speak with my wallet. I will continue to reward the companies who don't use this or any other intrusive protection scheme with the purchase of their game. Those that continue down this road will not see a cent from me, no matter how badly I want the game. We need to send a strong message to these companies about what is tolerable and what is just plain wrong.

Yeah, but try telling that to Mike and Andy who work down at EB Games, and they just HAVE to play the latest FPS.

Imagine if this software starts circulating in office software, and replecating itself onto internet servers... it's like a horror movie, only real-life.

LOL

Sounds like Tim "The Toolman".

Three words: Game Copy World. To back up your legit games, of course - and circumvent that StarForce crap -.

But if it did, I'm sure they would have told you, right?

That response they gave you sounds like a steaming pile of BS.

Nice of them to insult their paying customers like that. I guess none of us actually have a worthwhile complaint, huh

This is BS.

A game installed that crappy driver, the same game should uninstall it. Why should you as an end user resort to try to find out who these StarForce people are and download an uninstaller for that driver?

You, as a game buyer, didn't do any business with the StarForce outfit. Only with the game publishers.

Edit: Skink, send those guys a link to this thread so they can see how much good will they are generating with those sneaky drivers and how easy it is to circumvent them.
