| Cheap company What do you guys expect ?
They don't pay people enough, so what makes you think that you will receive good service from them ?
Retail people are paid around 7-7.50 per hour AFAIK and have no training.
Unfortunately I work in retail myself and to be honest don't really care.
Oh and the full time at Best Buy is 32 hours/week |

 | Hey guys... I work at Best Buy Thousand Oaks... All of our staff is A + certified or is required to be so in a reasonable time period... btw I can answer all of those questions... not to mention our staff could too. The reason why they format things some times is a format is definitely going to fix a problem over a soft format which doesnt allways do that job. We ALWAYS check with customers first before formatting.. Its our policy. We also try and solve the problem (whatever it may be) before we even come to a format as a solution. So whatever... Just lay off us Techs |

A+ is mainly a hardware cert with basic OS fundamentals. Explains why they format whenever windows has a problem. Anyways, any kid with little or no computer experience can get this cert.

Precisely. -- If everything seems to be going well, you've obviously overlooked something. |

| Hi
I"m not afraid of inside of PC's really, just don't want anything happening like my old P3 did, and smoke wheN i tried it, was trying to install a new soundcard then. but it enabled me to get an AMD Athlon based custom built from Local Shop, which had a decent price for the setup. |

Luckily they are not rolling out Geek Squad here in the Western Arkansas area anytime soon (you shoulda seen the eyes roll when they played that video to us and showed the uniforms )
Say what you want about GeekSquadTech, but he is correct about the official policy is that if a reformat is necessary, they are to contact the owner before proceeding. If some stores are not doing that, then something needs to be done concerning their manager. These guys have to put up with a lot of crap from customers (not as nice as phone support where you can abuse them and get away with it), they are there right in front of you, and arguing with you right off the bat.
That job wouldn't be so bad if all you had to do was work on PCs. But you also have to check out VCRs, stereos, TVs and crap that customers are returning...THEN you have to argue with them over what is wrong and the return policy. |

I agree....I find it hard to justify spending $200+ dollars getting those certificates...experience is what I value most... |

 | reply to Anonymous Come on guys, Give me a break, yes it is hard we have to work on a lot of stuff. At our store we have a lot of knowledgeable people and I was NOT using A plus as a shield... we are required to know a lot (at least at our store) so I cant defend the guys at whereever youve seen or been to. |

And I guarantee any guy (including myself) who works at the relatively small computer shop I work at knows a hell of a lot more about computer repair than any Best Buy "tech". Our customers don't get stiffed or excessively charged. We'll fix an issue with a machine in less than half the time it'll be sitting around in a Best Buy.
I'm sorry, but Best Buy's computer service center is a joke (including the Geek Squad). I could never bring myself to work at a place like that. Someone taking their machine to get fixed at places like Best Buy, Circuit City, and CompUSA is just as bad as consumers falling for the shitty machines the big name OEM companies turn out in droves. |
