Re: Telus Blocking Port 80? My port 80 and 25 were blocked as of july 24 2004.. what bugs me is i had to find out by some one telling me that the site was down.. no email from telus saying 'hey we are blocking some of you ports'.. oh well i just changed the port numbers... anything is better than Shaw |
|
 | I just was looking at the telus site and under the Service Limitations it says:
You are not permitted to operate an e-mail, web, news or other similar server through a TELUS Internet Services high speed service, except as specified by TELUS.
I remember one of the features telus had advertised when i signed up a year ago was "run your own mail server and get more space for emails"..lol
Found this here: »www.mytelus.com/internet/policies/TISAA.do |

 | reply to Ikarasu perhaps they are tired of having other isp's and upstream providers complain about random worms and such spreading from their network. Anyways, id never want to host off of a dsl line or a cable line, just doesnt make sence to do so.

Telus blocking ports... They don't seem to care about bandwidth, so I don't see why they'd do this. Maybe they really are just trying to "Protect" us from virus's, and increase network throughoutput - Would be nice if users could turn this off.

 | my lack of response is for two reasons:
a) i was away on holidays for the last few days. b) i don't respond to people who are out to troll and flame.
if you have a valid concern, feel free to discuss with me privately and i'll be glad to assist however i can. sitting here taking 'pot shots' as you call them isn't constructive in the slightest.
cheers

 | I expressed my valid concerns, you havent bothered to answer, because you dont have the answer.
After 5 days I received a reply from telus telling me that they had blocking INCOMING ports - still no mention of outgoing ports. The phone support continue to lie to the customers, again yesterday they told same thing to another friend of mine.
By the way - since telus only seems to be blocking the ports from going ON and OFF the telus network, I guess Im still vulnerable to receiving the worm traffic from any of the thousands of infected telus adsl subscribers ? |

 | reply to JammerMan79 >The information is available but you have to know where >to look. To be honest only a "nerd" like me can probably >find it
So, please tell me , where is it ? I cant even get anyone to directly confirm to me that outbound port 25 is blocked..
>More likely than not they did look for the information >and when they couldn't find it they assumed that nothing >had changed
They had to be receiving HUNDREDS of calls - i know DOZENS of people who were affected at the same time as me and my customers, so i find this hard to believe.
>As for why you're not receiving e-mails back about your >inquiries... I really couldn't tell you but if they have >anything close to the tone that you have been using in >these postings I could probably imagine why.
Im not sure what 'TONE' you are finding offensive - I have made one 'negative' post, directed to Telus helper asking him why he is being so quiet in responding to peoples questions on this issue, but he is so quick to jump up and snipe at people for VIOLATING THEIR TOS. Nothing i am questioning is a violation of TOS and primarily Im wondering why Telus is hiding from their customers, and now he is doing the same. And snide remarks about my grandmother needing ports open, I believe received the reply they warranted.
After phone calls to telus of 55 minutes, 40 minutes, 45 minutes, 32 minutes and 25 minutes and still not having an answer, I was pretty pissed off - overall, I believe telus DESERVES to hear customers complaining LOUDLY - they clearly are not getting it - they have probably the worst customer service of any company I've ever dealt with, and no regard for their customers at all. (Imagine my surprise, phoning the PHONE company , to get a message that says "sorry, we are very busy right now, please call again later...GOODBYE")
So, the email that i sent them , is exactly as follows - is there a reason not to answer this?:
--QUOTE--
I host web and mail servers for corporate customers that are on telus business adsl services. Starting today, they can no longer connect to their mail server SMTP outgoing on port 25 because the port is being blocked. Tech support denies this, however we have confirmed this to be true. None of the customers has been notified that their service has changed and that they no longer will be able to access their mail servers. Whats going on , could somebody please clarify - as I was told that telus is "DEFINETLY NOT BLOCKING AND THAT NOTHING HAS CHANGED BETWEEN YESTERDAY AND TODAY" , is it safe to assume that someone has misconfigured something and you are working on fixing this ??
--END QUOTE--
>It was not intended to stop people from doing things, >that were already against the TOS, however that has been >a byproduct.
Please refer to TOS that says im not allowed to connect to servers outside of telus..i still cant find that ? I dont know how many times i need to repeat that i am NOT hosting servers on my adsl connection, nor am i defending anyone's right to do so.
And, again, repeating myself (for the benefit of someone who posted..)- these customers are telus business adsl customers - they are NOT fixed ip (server) customers, but they ARE business customers, paying business rates for their adsl services. |
|
 | reply to leeanator5 And all this talk of email security, and telus is still not requiring SMTP authentication on their mail servers ??
Mind you, i guess that would be hard to do if you are also blocking people from using their own servers off the telus network... |
|
 1 edit | alright, here's what i'll repeat...
first, i have no control over what the helpdesk tells or doesn't tell you. i'm not in customer service, but i'll do what i can to ensure that the helpdesk is communicating the right message. bottom line, we are NOT hiding from the fact that we're filtering inbound and outbound ports. anyone who tries to deny this point is truly mistaken. i've said this before, and apologized before. it is still outside my realm of control, however.
second, if you read the pinned post regarding the security policy in this forum you will find the statement that we are in fact filtering outbound TCP 25 connections. we are doing this on any dynamic IP ADSL connection. while it may not say this specifically in the TOS, you will find that TELUS reserves the right to do whatever we need to do in order to protect our infrastructure.
third, we filter right at the aggregation layer, so you will not be 'infected' by the thousands of DSL subs in your area.
fourth, not a single thing we are doing on the network is new by any stretch of the imagination. do a search for my discussions regarding the ASTA. we are simply following best practices being adopted by the entire service provider community.
fifth, my lack of response is NOT because i don't have the answers to your questions. it is because i rarely respond to people who are anonymous insult slingers, the fact that much of this has been discussed before and you should learn to search the forums, and because i have many other things that i do with my time than sit here on a PC and surf BBreports
cheers

 | reply to leeanator5 My web page has not worked for about 3-4 days. After trying to configure my apache web server, I noticed that Port 80 is defenitely blocked.
Today I called Shaw, and I'm going to be switching within the next couple of weeks.
This is my reaction as a consumer, I hope you all do the same! |

 | reply to leeanator5 I'm moving to Uniserve: »www.uniserve.com/res/bc/dsl/index.php
You can get a non-pppoe connection from them, and they explicitly permit servers. Yay, I'm not a criminal for running ICQ any more! Oh yeah, and their tech support is more clueful, according to my friend who has used them for some time. |

1 edit | reply to leeanator5 I'm just putting 2 last words in here, then I think I'll be done.
Diesel_jl: Have fun with shaw, I'm quite happy with my Server 2.5 Plan, and running 4 different web servers. Was worth it for me to upgrade. Wish you guys would stop complaining about it, Its kinda irritating me... If you don't like it, Upgrade your plan, or Get off the Telus Network.
Ex-TelusUser: It seems your just being a troll , Your posting from a shaw connection. 1. Why are you mentioning PPPoE? Telus isn't PPPoE, I don't even know any Western providers in Canada that use PPPoE. Secondly, ICQ Isn't a Server, And I don't see why Uniserve is better, 6 Gigs a month... And they 'Strictly' enforce that cap. Have fun, something like $9 a gig afterwards. (At least what I read by another user on the forums) Don't they buy their bandwidth through Telus?
I think a Mod should lock this thread... It's getting a little carried away, and its just inviting trolls to come post.. |
|
 | reply to ex-TelusUser IM me your info and I'll get ya a smokin' deal. |
|
 | reply to leeanator5 Well ZacR, actually Uniserve does use PPPoE in their configuration for Dynamic IP#s. If you have a Static IP# from Uniserve then PPPoE is not used.
The point about ICQ and VPN Tunnels for that matter is that such things are BiDirectional activities just as Web Servers are.
Blocking port traffic from Subscribers is simply a Temporary Fix, things will change again (soon). That is unless all Telus wants to do is support the equivalent of "TV Channels". Obviously Telus would avoid placing CAPS on TV Channel type traffic, so I expect the lack of CAPS will continue. |

 | Actually George, PPPoe was a legacy Internet Gateway service that Uniserve Used and does use, but all new clients are DHCP or they can have Bridged Ethernet as well. Very versatile in choices. |
|
 | reply to Zac Well, ZacR, I am sorry that you are irritated but it is no less irritating to be told to quit complaining. Things don't change unless people complain about them. There is no guarantee that the complaints will lead to changes but it is pretty much guaranteed that there will not be any changes without complaints.
I will agree, however, that it would be nice if the trolls on both sides of the discussion would just go away. |

 | reply to AlexJH Not many people know about SSH. The average user wouldn't know that you can transfer files through SCP/SFTP.
Plus, no many worms and viruses that run around on port 22, considering it's mostly for *NIX systems. |

Do you really think telus is going to continue NOT billing for bandwidth ?? You cant really be that naive can you ? |
