keith2468Premium,MVM join:2001-02-03 Winnipeg, MB | HijackThis requires a lot of manual effort (15 minutes to one hour+) to determine what should and should not be removed. The manual aspect has caused the less skilled, and those relying on the less skilled, needless re-installs.
CWS was an an automated tool that ran in 3 minutes -- automated tools are much preferable. -- (Virus&Hijacking FAQ+Submit suspected malware+Security FAQ) |

15 minutes to an hour+? Maybe for the completely clueless. If you've got any knowledge with tinkering around with computers and the inner workings you'll be able to clean up relatively small amounts of hijacks in less than a minute. It's really not that difficult. However, the program is more for the power user who knows what they're doing. Anyway, you CAN NOT seriously harm your system by deleting "non-hijacks" with it. The only things you'd lose would be things like entries for startup programs, custom icons in IE, your homepage, plugins, etc.
Then again, I clean spyware out of machines almost daily as my job. |

Check out the response times for HJT posts in ComputerCops or SWI.
You'll see the wait times are pretty lengthy.
Of course it is shorter if you are going through your own system. -- (Virus&Hijacking FAQ+Submit suspected malware+Security FAQ) |

We've had people end up with non-bootable systems due to that kind of attitude. HijackThis is a tool that requires experience and training, and Merjin recommends this.
Merjin didn't make that recommendation for no reason. |
