burger2000 : Some home routers cannot handle a massive load of traffic and will crash, requiring a power cycle. I've seen this happen at my previous employer where they ran 25 employees through a linksys router. The router would die daily.

As for multiple cable modems off one line, you can run one drop to a 16-way splitter, hook up 16 modems and they will all work (as long as signal permits). Keep in mind at 256QAM your downstream for the whole channel is 42Mbps. So 16 cable modems going 3Mbit will saturate the downstream. But anyway, this is how cable is designed and the basis of those sharing with neighbor ads from telcos.

The bandwidth is always there. Your speed is determined by the modem.
two 3MB plans + 2 cable modems, 1 house, rip off??

insoolated : Hi. I live in a house with 5 people. We use a router for three people on our old 3mbps plan. The router crashed when we tried to add everyone onto the one line, so we decided to try and get another cable line and cable modem on another 3mbps plan. This way I thought our speeds would be independant and faster since it's not being split up as much. So today I got a cable modem but all the technician did was activate an old cable line. I thought it was going to be another entirely new cable feed from the cable box. Ends up I'm probably still sharing the same speeds from the cable line right among 5 people, right? just that i have my own IP address. So will I actually be capable of 6mbps speeds coming through the house? Am I getting ripped off?
