[DW6000] Could DWay prevent Windows Update from working?

I stopped being able to run Windows Update, and it last
worked before I had DWay - could these be connected?

The problem:
When I run Windows Update and scan for updates, it shows 0% complete and
no progress bar for several minutes, then jumps to 100% and says "no
updates available". Same result whether I start with Start > Help and
Support, or start from Microsoft web site using IE. If I start from
Microsoft web site with Netscape Navigator, it takes several minutes to
load a completely blank page and report "done" on status bar. My last
successful Update was February 14 (back when I used dialup service).

My system:
Dell 4600 with Dell Computer Corporation A02 BIOS.
Windows XP Pro v5.1.2600 with Service Pack 1.0
Internet Explorer 6.0.2800.1106.(etc) with Service Pack 1,
language option English (United States) [en-us]
Internet connection: DirecWay Satellite, Consumer Edition
DW6000 Satellite Modem doing NAT and DHCP Server, to
Linksys BESFX41 router (all firewall features disabled) doing NAT, to
Hardwired p2p ethernet network with switch, all fixed IP.

Some of the things I have tried after online forum discussions and
searching Microsoft Knowledge Base:
Date and time are set correctly.
Scripting engine updated per Microsoft Knowledge Base.
Downloaded, installed latest version of IE per Microsoft Knowledge Base.
Using Norton Antivirus, AdAware, and SpyBot (all up to date).
Internet cache & cookies cleared.
Used Windows Troubleshooter, which freezes after first suggestion.
Ran lspfix.exe which reports zero items fixed.

I had the same problem with my Linksys BEFSR81 router. The solution I found was to set the routers MTU to 1460, instead of the 1500 which is the default and normal for cable or DSL internet.

No, you've got something else...

Did D.K.'s fix take care of Windows update problem?

Are you currently using an MTU of 1470 or 1460 with your Linksys Router? You used to use 1460...

ChristianEdw -

DW6000 Pro users have reported problems using certain Linksys Routers using it's default MTU setting of 1500:

»[DW6000] can't send e-mail

You are a DW6000 CE user who uses the Linksys Router as a router and can, therefore, run into the same problem.

I'm surprised that this Linksys MTU / Dway Sat. Connection "quirk" hasn't been submitted for inclusion into the FAQ by someone who has run into this problem.

ChristianEdw,
The text of your original post indicates that you have no firewall in place right now.
Is this accurate, or do you have the Norton firewall as well as their antivurus software?

There is a setting for Norton's firewall to allow Windows Update...I'll give it to you if you need it.

In addition to the other suggestions, make sure you have a default language specified in IE. It's Tools => Internet Options => General tab = > Languages.

I had a similar issue with Windows Update when I had no language specified.

You're right; 1460. It was a typo.

I was the one that originally had that problem with the befxr41 linksys router, I was unable to send attachments and do windows update back in november. I changed the mtu back to 1460.

I recently did the firmware update to 1.50.18 and the setup totally changed. there are two choices now enabled or disabled and then a blank with 1500 in there by default. I had it disabled when I went over there to look and everything has been running just fine here.

I just tried a little experiment and changed it to 1500 and ran windows update after rebooting the router and windows update didn't work.

So I tried again and this time set it to 1460 and still couldn't get to windows update.

The third time I put a mark in the radio button for disabled and now I am able to go to windows update. I think I'll be taking this over to the linksys conference.

Folks,
Thanks! Setting the router's MTU to 1460 made it work!

So, what's an MTU?

CM, you asked about my firewall - I don't have one. I spent several hours each trying to make ZoneAlarm Pro versions 3 and 4 work, and could not browse ordinary web sites like CNN unless I turned off EVERY SINGLE FEATURE. And I even bought the products! So I hoped to use hardware firewall features in the Linksys BEFSX41 router, but haven't spent the time on it yet. I don't know how to start, actually - any suggestions?

Assuming you are smart enough to use ZoneAlarm (I found out I wasn't) start by reading the documentation.
I think there is a 'learning mode' where the firewall asks you for permission as each application tries to access the internet.
Of course, you could allow all of them full permissions...but what would be the use of a firewall?

Read up on it and do your best...or (and) benefit from the advice of others who use ZAP.

They will probably have something to say...

further update on the befx41

I posted this problem to the Linksys forum on bbr and one of the regulars suggested I upgrade the firmware to the 1.51 version that is a beta version. He said I had already found the work around by disabling the mtu in the firmware.

There is a big long thread over there on this firmware, but I upgraded to it anyway.

1.51 allows me to set a 1500 mtu and I can still use Windows update and I'm able to upload files by email. It seems to be fixed here, hopefully the sky won't fall.
