Re: Telus Blocking Port 80?

I too just got hit with this (Calgary) without warning. I'm a computer geek and am running a personal linux firewall with my own website and mail server. No significant traffic so that shouldn't be a concern for Telus. After talking to Telus the only option for me is to upgrade to their Business Server package at $85/mo!! I activated it so I can get my email again but I'm switching to Shaw... Why can't they offer a geek-friendly service?!? It's not like I'm using up lots of bandwidth or anything. I can understand blocking outgoing port 25 to prevent viruses from spreading... but why block incoming port 25 and 80?!? And why is my only option a $85 plan for something that's just for personal use?

Grr...

Good bye Telus.

Uniserve charges $19.95/month for the first 8 months, $34.95/month afterwards and doesn't restrict all that stuff. Look what happens when you *don't* deal with a monopoly?

Ok ... I'm sure I'll regret this but .... if you're looking at an alternative(one of several alternatives) where exactly does the monopoly come in?

"The exclusive power, or privilege of selling a commodity; the exclusive power, right, or privilege of dealing in some article, or of trading in some market; sole command of the traffic in anything, however obtained; as, the proprietor of a patented article is given a monopoly of its sale for a limited time; chartered trading companies have sometimes had a monopoly of trade with remote regions; a combination of traders may get a monopoly of a particular product."
