kmac1Off in new directionsPremium,VIP join:2001-06-07 Port Neches, TX | SBC will be having higher uploads soon!!! One of my jobs here at BBR, besides doing Tech support, is to analyze current trends and bring them back to the company. Users have hounded our team relentlessly asking for higher uploads, and we kept reporting that back.
Well, we finally got thru!
I'm not allowed to list specifics yet, but I do promise customers will be pleased!
One of the things people have to keep in mind is that the push from end users for a higher upload is being driven by the file-sharing and gaming communities. Other than VoIP and some higher end Video Telecom apps, nothing else is really being pushed by a loss of bandwidth on the upload side AT THIS PRESENT TIME!
The next couple of years are going to be fun to watch as Content catches up with Technology. Then, we'll really see a push for speeds like some of the other countries are implementing. Can anyone say 100mbps FTTP? -- Put your spare CPU cycles to WORK! Join the BBR DC Teams and join in on helping helping find ET or cures for diseases. SETI and Team Helix. Join in on the fun! |

| I hope you are right ADSL guy.
The first thing I would like to see is an RT put up near my home so I can take advantage of the faster upload speeds. Right now, I can only get 1500/256, which don't get me wrong, is very nice. However, I have to realize that until an RT is deployed, it is the fastest I can get.
Still...another benefit is the $26.95 price point.
Can't complain too much, but I would buy more bandwidth if it was available to me. -- My Domain Nightfall's Hockey and Life Journal |

 | reply to kmac1 Well if they are looking for testers, put at the top of the list please.:D
But I wonder how many would be willing to trade off download speed to upload speed.
At my current 3/384, going to 2/1 would be fine by me.
However since I dropped down to the 3/384 from the 6/768, how about a 3/1.5 or maybe even a 3/3.
having the 6 meg D/L was nice, but very rarely was put to full advantage. 3 meg is working out good for D/L. But chopping my u/L in half has been a noticeable impact when uploading web sites and such. -- Tim |

cghh join:2001-01-15 Milpitas, CA | reply to holmantp Isn't the ADSL protocol (G.dmt anyway) limited to 800Kb/s upstream? There is the POTS frequency band at the bottom, then the upstream tones, then the downstream tones (up to 1.1Mhz). There is only room for 800Kb/s capacity for the upstream tones, and that band has fixed top and bottom edges. |

 | reply to kmac1 Driven by GAMERS? Oh man!
Setting up VPN's is a (heck) of a lot more fun! Then, there are nutcases like me who insist on running their "own" http, smtp, pop, ftp and dns (mine even reverses).
I could get SBC/ASI (and Sonic and ME) more customers with some reasonably priced tiers such as 1.5m/1.0m, or even take the 6m/6k tier, and cap the downspeed to (methinks) make them a tad more economical for ISP's to handle.
My 5-year-old Alcatel 1000 works *great* at 6M/6K. When will I have to consider ever retiring this longtime friend? |

If you renewed your contract, you're suppose to be on 1536/256 sync rate.

Well that maybe where the majority of the request come from but there are those of us who could make use of the higher uploads and don't play games and don't file share. I think you would sell a lot more static/business accounts with higher uploads. As bandwidth increases more people will want to run their own servers locally.
Personally I do a lot of work from home and use our company VPN all the time. I have the need to transfer many files back and forth and we use a source code library that is network intensive (lots of file checks before the transfer or really any operation). Even with 6000/600 it runs a bit slow (yeah it was almost unusable at 128 and I used a dialup version which was awful). I can also generate a 100MB data file pretty quickly and we upload these to test servers all the time, again this can take a fair amount of time and the higher upload would be welcome.
It is not only gamers and torrent users wanting the higher uploads now. |
