GTE/Verizon Modems Question??

The abv outfit recently installed my DSL. It works and I'm happy with my install and speed. They sent me two identical installation kits and two modems. The modems, Fujitsu, appear to be used equiptment. They are marred and scratched on the case. One looks like it was used in Nam. Also, they sent me the wrong cable that connects the NIC to the modem.
I was lucky to have two installation kits to borrow off the other cable.

Question:

Why is GTE/Verizon using these used modems?

Thx

the first modem they sent me was brand new and it barely connected. the tech came and tried the old style modem and it worked fine. it still works good to this day. i don't like getting a used one, but hey it works =P

IF GTE/Verizon were'nt so careless about sending out extra modems maybe they wouldn't have backorders on them.

So far my fujitsu has worked well and it appeared to be new.

I have Earthlink DSL service but GTE sent me the self-install package with the Fujitsu Speedport modem. My modem was apparently made in late August.

Do you have any serial or model numbers off the modems you have? Also, do you have the serial/model numbers of the cable they sent you to connect to your NIC? I have heard that certain Fujitsu modems have the wrong cables.

I am unable to connect yet (After two weeks) and wonder if I have a problem with the cable they sent me. What cable did you buy to get it correct? Thanks!!!

Ok, heres the whole scoop. Verizon/GTE in Calif sent me two complete installation kits when I signed on with dsl. Two modems, cables, filters --the whole 9 yds.

We hooked it all up but it wouldn't work so we trouble-shooted it to the fact the cable from the NIC card to the modem was the wrong one. So, we just used the cable from the other kit and it worked and solved problem.

I'm not a tech but the problem was--when the wrong cable was attached to the LinkSys NIC card and modem--the little green light on the back of my NIC would not light(up).

When we used the cable from the other kit --the light lit and it worked. So, heres your info:

Modem I'm Using: Fujitsu Speedport, DSL by Orckit
Ser# or00905b1k54304b
2nd Modem: Same as abv, #or00905b 1k629k6b (51/1999)
(note: the first modem did not have anything on it like"51/1999"

The modem cases are gray but appear they were used in Nam or E/Germany I've had no modem probs' yet.

The wrong cable:

1. Its gray and has lots of #'s on it. It looks rather home made as opposed to the the one that works from install kit#2.

Heres the writing on the bad cable:

Anixter alc 5 e107890 24awg cm 75c ul csa LL86238 cmg
60c verified tia/eia 568-a cat v 2698 613756

Also on this cable, someone has scotch taped a typewritten:

145646
m88de7451
7 ft
0998 *c*

Thats the scoop on the cable that would not make my nic card light turn on.

The cable from kit#2 that solved the problem:

1. It looks more professionally built or made.

Golden Bridge UTP CAT5 100MhZ 26awg x 2p patch type cm ul

So thats all I know--that first cable would not lite up the grn lite on the rear of my nic card. The second one did and it worked.

one is a patch (straight through), the one that didn't work was a cross-over cable?

@impulse.net

In the first installation kit--the cable that connects the nic card to the modem did not work and would not light up the grn lite on the rear of the nic card. (I dont kno the tech name for this cable) I think I saw it in Nam or E/Berlin in the late 60's

We then grabbed the cable from kit#2 and it made the grn light on the rear of nic card light (up). This cable is now running on my system.

While I'm no tech, the first cable appeared very home made as it appeared as if someone had just attached a phone connecter to each end.

The cable I'm using appears to be more professionally made.

Finally, it just seems strange the modems look so bad and this weird home made, field expedient type cable shows at a customers house.

Everything is working just a strange situation from Verizon/GTE.

Ok maybe i could shed some light on the subject as far as the cables, One of the modems (the RA12) uses a crossover cable, the other modem (RA14 the newest one we send out uses a straight line cable). If you look at the bottom of the modem at the end of one of the serial numbers it will say RA12 or Ra14, the way you tell the cable, Hold the two ends next to each other, look at the wires inside, on the crossover cable the colors will be on opposite sides of each end, on the straight line cable they will be identical. Now you Have to use the correct cable with the correct modem or it wont work, They may have sent you the wrong cable

verizon is horrid. They blame everything on me. When I know infact it is not me. They also sent me 2 modems and were like sorry for the time delay even though I got my first modem 2 days after signing up. Im keeping both though as my connection has been off about half the time because of them. I look at it as a little getting even =D

Crash....

Buckshot123 gave you the straight dope.... he knows what
he's talking about...

Here's some more.... The RA12...older modem is more rock solid than the RA14....Hang on to your 12 if you can...

I heard it thru the grapevine that a certain company is
having 'lot's of. some troubles with the ra14, and are trying to get everyone onto the more reliable ra12...

I heard something about a short life span....and / or a
bad batch!!!
