Re: [Other Providers] AOL VoIP

Anybody know what areas they are testing in? I just got an invite from Beta VoIP and put in my info... it seems that it is based on geographical location for testing ala ATT.

Will they ship the adaptor to an address other then the billing address? I just have an old screenname on my family's account that I use IM for but don't live anywhere near them, nor do they live at the billing address for most of the year!

I opened the door today to a FedEx man with a package from AOL. They just shipped me an adaptor without even letting me know. The service is pretty good believe or not. The features are lacking though but the voicemail stuff is really nice. 1800-AOL-1234 for vm access and email access too.

Congrats on the service. It's really nice. I haven't paid my Packet 8 lately due to having this FREE AOL service.

Even tho there is alot of skipping at times on the line, I'll tke free anyday.

As soon as AOL VoIP stops the beta test, I'll pay P8.

Yeah, now that I have been using it more. The audio quality is not nearly as good as VP. Some faint echo and missing audio for no apparent reason.

That generalization is so wrong. AOL VoIP is services by Level3. Directory assistance with Level 3 is GRRRRREAT and FREE mind you.

As for the software side of things, you are wrong about that too. There is no software to be installed with AOL VoIP. You get a terminal, a nice sleek Motorola name brand terminal, mind you.

All ya gotta do is set that sucka up like you know how, and wait for the green light to sync and go solid, and BOOM!:o

The voice quality is lacking like someone said, but since I've had the service, it really has improved.
Still, there are issues when poeple call your number, they may get a busy signal, or an out of service recording, as people I've spoken with say, they have tried my number and some times they cannot get thru.

I recommend trying out AOL Voip Service while the trial is still ongoing. If you go to KEYWORD: VOIP BETA, and scroll down to: Jan 31: REGISTRATION NOTE, there is a link there where you can fill out a form and sign up again for the beta.

You must be an AOL Beta tester to get the service tho. So, make sure you go to KW: BETA to become a beta tester.

Why people are still using AOL as ISP? During dial-up times I think it was ridicilously overpriced offer for brain-dead people.
Why would you want to pay 25$ a month for something which other providers offer for $10 or less.
Even if not money but general Internet connectivity was done via proxy servers. My understanding you never even had proper TCP/IP connectivity with AOL and was able to use only specific OS, application and drivers working with AOL.
There are of course some people for whom support means everything and ability to call somebody in 24/7 is very important but my understanding in this group people are at least fairily technical to be able to troubleshoot problems themselves.

And your understanding is wrong. And no you don't HAVE to use their cache complex if you don't want to either. AOL has it's place just like MSN, Windows, MAC's and all the others. We're not living in the Soviet Union and I'm glad we each have options.

It's good to have many options. I just don't understand why people will choose more expensive option when less expensive is available which connect to the same Internet as option no. 1?

Well,

#1 MY AOL VoIP is FREE to use. Who here is getting FREE VoIP Phone service? NOT MANY.

#2 I never said I paid for my AOL membership, did I?

#3 I'm VERY HAPPY with my service. There is nothing wrong with AOL, except all the junk software that the client installs when you install a new version. That junk can then be uninstalled, if one knows how to uninstall software.

#4 Did I mention, my VoIP phone service is FREE, and has been free for the past 5 months? Boy being a beta tester at AOL sure has its priviledges. One less bill every month. It's been real. Talk is VoIP at AOL will see daylight soon, so my free service may get chopped off.

Thanks people.
