Re: [Connectivity] Signal Drop in WA area

Ok, well here's an update on what happened.

Called Wednesday for tech to roll out. Arrived Friday during scheduled time. They walked in and looked at my modem and then looked at each other and had a look on their face that I think said 'what kind of POS is this'. The two guys then said yeah, problem found. Well it turns out yesterday (Thursday) most of their tech calls happened to be going around replacing old 3Com modem (shark fin style) cause they were all having trouble for some reason. (reason not given) So they tested my line, went through the normal deal, blah blah blah and then replaced my modem and now I'm good to go.

The gentlemen told me that they were changing their network around to a new setting (probably the QAM 256) and that people were dropping on and off.

They were nice enough to even reach behind and untangle the jungle of cables behind the desk and haul away my old modem. (I was just happy he said 'don't worry I'll get it out') *grin*

Also for Nickell and anyone else in Federal Way, they are heading in that direction soon they said for changing the QAM values. These guys plan on telling Comcast about this issue in a bit more detail and hope that they will be more quick on fixing cases like mine. Who knows though.

...Case closed...

I am having similar problems with the connection. I'm in the des moines area and have the older RCA modem. The tech told me that it was still a compatible modem. My problem is that the modem will constantly reinitialize itself and sometimes the lights stay on but no connection. I have never had such issues and had always had decent speeds. The tech is coming on sunday and I hope he doesn't try and blame it on my equipment. I do have a wireles router but have tried a modem to pc hook up and the same problems exist. So far the connection has been about 200 - 300kbs. What's funny is that I told the tech this and she said that it was plenty fast>>>>what is she smoking. Compare 300kbs to ~3Mbs that's not even half the advertised bandwidth. I can't even get 1.5Mbs, what a bunch of bologne. Anyways hope the problem gets fixed. I hope it's just my modem that's outdated or something. Those that are getting techs come to their house keep us updated and let us know what they did to fix the problem....

Having some stability issues .. checked my modem info page and it is labled as ...

Modulation: 256 QAM

So hopefully they get the bugs worked out soon.

(Notes: RCA Modem supplied by Comcast and signals within range. Location: Vancouver Washington)

Do you recall what your SNR was when you looked at your modem signal levels?

I looks like to me your SNR is great, and i don't believe your problem is with the change to QAM256.All your other signals are also good. You might start looking at your modem for the problem.Read this FAQ.

Just tell what is happening to the tech that rolls out. The person on the phone probably had no clue on what was up. It was the same with the rep. that I talked with. He was nice enough to listen to what I said and agreed that it could have been a modem problem but honestly did not know what was up.

If you have been dropping on and off the network they should have a log of it if you want to further point out that it could be a modem issue.

Still not fixed here, I guess I ought to just call them and get a new modem.

Just ran into the same problem, been having issues the last week or so in Burlington NJ with drop outs, and have been using the same modem (3cr29220) for the last 2 years with Comcast. I moved (on 8/1) to Union NJ and tried to activate service here, and no go, modem wont sync up.(keep in mind that this setup worked 3 days before on Comcast network) Had techs out here and they said to replace modem...I did (motorola sb5100), and it worked right away. Comcast moved to an auto discovery process where you plug in the modem, and it grabs an IP, and redirects you to a sign in page for comcast (to create or modify your account) and captures your new MAC address. I think it's too much of a coincidence that all of these modems are "faulty" at the same time. The techs at Comcast are saying that they can only delete your modem settings on their end not add them any more (no more manual MAC additions).....too bad they are not more forthcoming with the info....if they've changed something that precludes certain modems from connecting, so be it, but let us know....
