The government has no business sense

We do not need government trying play businessman. They can't balance a budget. They have no respect for money. And yes stories like this should be rerun to remind us that the government will never succeed in the business world. Deficit spending is for idiots who believe politicians tell the truth.

If they had opended it up to res clients they wouldn't be in this mess. I can walk to one of the main fiber lines. I would have killed to get on with them but noooooo they just want Biz clients, well I AM a biz client and still they weren't interested.

If I was going to build such a fiber network. I would've at least setup hotspots every 3000 feet ontop of a light pole to increase the profitability of the network so I could sell it residential.

Apperently they just thought if they built it they would come... Funny thing was we did come they just weren't interested. Guess they were waiting on Christ to call for fiber connection.

I'm interested to see how you might figure that opening this up to residential clients would have made it a guaranteed success. They were only successful in selling the service to 180 business clients in a 7 year period.

Marketing statistics show that even with DSL, less than 8% of those customers that are eligible for it (and have it available to them) actually subscribe. Most common reason? They can't see the need for paying for it- and that's even at $30 per month!

When a company can only gather 180 BUSINESS customers in 7 years time, the residential customers are going to be FAR less than that! Residential rates are lower than business rates- that would spell RED INK even more than now!

I never said it would guaranteed success but its better than
just having your fiber sitting there doing NOTHING. 180 biz clients in 7 years is piss poor. Someone should gotten ahold of that and ran with it. Instead they just let it die and get bought out. There alot of people in Marietta with cash and if they really wanted to they could have offered package that blew away bellsouth and comcast. They chose not to.

Sometimes it requires more time to recoup the money that was used to string the fiber from the backbone to the home than the customer wants to be with them. If it cost $500 to string the fiber and the customer cancels the service before the money is recouped and the customer becomes profitable, then that can screw things up too. This is why some things require contracts.

But at least with the dot-bombs, the only people who got screwed were shareholders who voluntarily chose to invest money in these ventures. Everyone else who did not invest did not lose any money. With a taxpayer-financed racket like this, it is everyone who loses out, whether they supported the project or not.

On the contrary I think they would have gotten far more residential customers than 180. As with most communications services business tend to be in the minority when it comes to straight number of customers compared to the number of consumer level customers. Certainly the business customers bring in much more revenue, but I am sure they could have gotten a thousand or more residential subscribers. That may or may not have made a difference on the books but at least they would have made more revenue than they did.

I agree with youngmoore. This was a poor business decision and I can't really fathom why on Earth they didn't do it... unless logic never factored in.

IMHO, it may have been a decision based on profitability. In telco POTS service, consumer services are a large source of revenue, but the cost to serve consumers verses businesses is much higher due to the much lower price for the service. If they served 1000 or more residential services, they may have had more revenue per se, but it is possible that it would have cost more money to provide the service than the revenue would have brought in- making it a faster disaster.

The infrastructure is already built out and they were losing money on it with the lack of customers as it is. Sure the costs would be a lot less on consumer level broadband (thus lower revenues), but in the long run that can still turn out to be more profitable. Also keep in mind consumers who are happy with the service also have jobs. The possibility of increasing the business customer base is also a strong possibility.

As far as the cost/revenue of the residential customers I don't know the breakdowns for this sort of service so I really can't say either way on that. Perhaps you are right on that, but this particular muni smells more of mis-management than bad idea.
