Re: [DSL] win98 Laptop d/ling ~500k faster than XP

What RWIN does the laptop have? What is the MTU?

Can you post a Teeak Test from the laptop? So we can comapre the two.

Try that RWIN and also 49368.

Maybe there is something "stuck" in the TCP/IP settings in the registry.

This will reset the registry to default TCP/IP values.

(Is this what you called the TCP stack fix?)

Open a Command Prompt and type:
netsh int ip reset c:\resetlog.txt

Reboot. Set The Doctor Tweaks.

Save, exit, reboot, retest.

This is definitely a real kicker.

yep did the reset tcp/ip registry, no the stack fix was another error thing from another thread, I can't even remember the details now but once I find it I'll post it. It'll take some time to get the tweak test on the laptop, she's scared that if I mess with it it's going to go slower lol

I'll probably do it later tonight or tomorrow morning. Also will try that RWIN.

ok, just did a speed test on the laptop, 2.475/352

here's the tweak test, the rwin makes me want to cry lol:
»ttester.broadbandreports.com/twe···terpppoe

immediately after getting this info I ran a speed test on the desktop and got
Your Throughput

Download = 1.991 Mbps
Upload = 354.54 kbps

trying that lower rwin number you posted now. Will edit post with the speeds.

edit: No change with the other rwin, someone in the other thread suggested trying setting the nic to 10mbps and/or half duplex so gonna try that. Will edit if it changes anything in a good way.
Your Throughput

Download = 1.991 Mbps
Upload = 355.55 kbps
edit2: tried 100 full, 100 half, 10 full, and 10 half and it didn't change at all.

Set your RWIN to 14750. Save, exit, reboot, retest, repost.

Just a guess here on what it might be.

nope same, 1.95 down

only other tip I've gotten was on the other thread someone suggested trying to get a nic with the same chipset and drivers that the laptop has, which seems to me to be REALLY stretching it, because when I was on cox cable I had this same router and same pc and everything else the same (well I've reinstalled xp due to a faulty video card that ended up bluescreening in the middle of a repair of xp when I thought it was the vid drivers) and had no problem reading 3.0 down and sometimes a little higher.

plus I don't even know how to go about finding out if there is a nic that has the same chipset as her pcmcia dlink nic does, and given that she's on 98 and I'm on xp I'd think that would preclude the drivers from being the same too

Naw, I read that. It is not a NIC chipset problem.

So you downloaded from a site and got 3000kp/s?

yeah back when I had cox, over 6 months ago now. And with pppoe overhead I should be seeing abour 2.4~2.5 down I understand, I do prefer the better pings I've been getting (my node was very oversold) and have no desire to go back to cable, just wanna get this up to speed

I had one other thought, someone over there posted a link to another speed test that has some seriously strong stats, gonna try to cut and paste them here as well as there, very long text though, just fyi, gimme a few mins.

Is that the Miranda Speed Test? If so, I was going to post that. Now, be careful on some of the things that it reports. It does not apply or is off into the wild blue.

I have been trying to figure out what is amiss here. I compared my results with yours and others.

What I see is the MaxCwnd: 38640 is too low. It should be close to or above your RWIN. This is also low CurCwnd: 23460. However, I cannot find a way to fix it.

well, if nothing else, I may this weekend try a repair install of XP. Dunno if it'll help, but Im out of other ideas. If that doesn't work I'll be backup a lot of data (hope I have enough cd's laying around) and trying a reformat and install.

Are you sure you did this?

This will reset the registry to default TCP/IP values.

Open a Command Prompt and type:
netsh int ip reset c:\resetlog.txt

Reboot. Set The Doctor Tweaks.

Save, exit, reboot, retest.

same speeds, here's the tweak test (I didn't apply drtcp fixes at all to it yet)
»ttester.broadbandreports.com/twe···terpppoe

It's already at 1492 (at the router as well as at the modem) and the rwin is already set to what it should be (or so I'm told)

Something I just remembered, right before I upgraded I had downloaded and ran MS's regclean utility, possibly that wiped something out or corrupted something? Of course I stupidly didn't keep a backup registry from then
