Thanks MSeng, I did see how to get back to v.4, but formatted anyway. Wanted to put windows on a smaller drive anyway.
Wanted to try some different things. One thing, was to install windows xppro and install sp2 without ever seeing sp1 or v.4 windows up date. It worked fine.
Was able to replicate the problem by turning off services but still didn't track it down to what I was experiencing.
