I have heard that Nintendo plans on using gyroscopes in Revolution's controllers, this would allow them to move on the Z-axis. Imagine playing a first person shooter by just pointing your hand like a gun. (Think something like those gloves in Minority Report) Nintendo first became interested in gyroscope technology in September 2001 when they invested large sums of money into Gyration(spelling?) Inc.
