Re: USR 8054 Change to D-Link 624+ Firmware

It looks like your 8054 is detecting an 'adhoc' connection (computer - computer) As you stated, your laptop should be set to 'infrastructure' Try reinstalling your laptop USR software and be sure 'infrastructure' is selected.

I didn't encounter this problem.

I'm VERY tempted to trythe D-Link firmware as it seems that USR is less than responsive to fixing problems and providing a nice stable 8054. What have been people experiences with the D-Link firmware on their 8054:

1) Is is almost as fast as the USR FW being that it doesn't support 125 m-bit...which is a joke anyway?

2) How stable is it?

3) Does it provide any new features (like AP to AP bridging)?

4) Better/worse radio range, signal strength, etc...?

5) Which D-Link FW is the best, the latest?

6) Anything else that you can think of that would impact my decision?

Thanks in advance for you replies!

and that's it... thank you all guys, with your help and suggestion i finally had my 8054 working. i admit i was pretty skeptical in the beginning, reading how dlink fw was correctly running on usr, but obviusly same hardware should support same firmware... not a reboot or any unexpected behavior since then... so thank you again and to all those who still don't believe it, just try... you'll find out for yourselves

I upgraded one of my 8054's to the latest D-Link 624+ firmware (v1.21) and get almost zero thruput when connected wirelessly and FTP'ing (uploading) any file to my LOCAL FTP server. Turbo mode is set to on in the firmware and I am connected wirelessly with my Dell D600 laptop's internal 802.11g adapter (which works flawlessly with v1.44 of USR's firmware). Any ideas? I'm using the same channel and basic config for both styles of firmware (USR & D-Link).

Thanks in advance for you replies!

ok... I would like to try this on my USR8054

I see a lot of info here but the links above in the beginning of the post are gone or best I can tell it says "Page cannot be displayed"

Any ideas on what I need to download?
Will I have to change it?
If I have to change it, how is this accomplished?

Thanks

The stuff you need is on my webspace:
»home.wanadoo.nl/route88/Misc/

First upload the di-624v115 rom.bin to your 8054.
Warning: the IP of the 8054 will change into 192.168.0.1
, (password blank)set your NIC to DHCP and use a wired connection with the router.
Now upgrade to di624p121b15nml.bin and change your settings as desired.

For converting back to USR firmware first load usr8054 v144b12 di624revax.bin.

That's all, good luck.

I didn't use the 'revax' firmware myself cause i'm still using the latest D-Link firmware. According to other users this should work, so you can jump from the 144b12 revax to the latest USR version.

Cool and thanks again... is the firmware you have available on your link for the dlink side the most current?

I saw October 2004 when I loaded it... so far I am quite impressed. Has much better wireless networking than the USR firmwares did. This was a wake up call for this router, the good point about the USR firmware is you can with a couple of clicks turn it into an AP for another router, which was fine when I ran monowall.

The good thing about monowall was the wake on lan configuration feature. Which in this case would be an advantage remotely for some machines that I do control. The dlink firmware on the 8054 works fantastic, and really gave this router a performance boost as well as the mac address DHCP IP reservation (monowall may have had this but I never really looked into it).

If this router did wake on lan I would be sold.

Version 121b15 is the latest D-Link firmware available for the USR 8054 router.

@ Bohemian: as far as i know the USR 9106 uses other chips, so don't mess with the firmware, wait for an update!

Just flashed mine..
Haven't played too much with the wireless settings... still running WEP Open, 64 bit ascii...

Haven't noticed any speed decrease in wired transfers... don't care about the speed I see in wireless...

Only difference is the status lights are both green now

And bad news,
just had my first reboot...
downloading torrents and from the newsgroup...
connected via wired.
Gaming mode off, multicast on, filter via MAC Address.
channel 1.
DLink firmware doesn't fix it..

try limiting your upload for bittorrents to around 15 - 20

Currently I have upload bandwidth of 100kbytes/s....
limiting it isn't a permanent solution for me
but, even still, with bittorrent turned off, it still rebooted just while downloading from the usenet at 200kbyte/s...

WHOEVER IS HAVING RESET ISSUES READ THIS.

I was VERY frustrated by having resets every 10-15...sometimes it would reset 40-50 mintutes...I tried practically EVERY SETTING for about 2-3 weeks. DLINK FIRMWARE IS THE SOLUTION!!!!!!!!

I play online games and it would kick me out during the reset....I noticed that my laptop with VPN access would freeze but NOT disconnect during this time. It was annoying to have a ethernet cable go from my living room to my office for 3 months...now I don't have too!

Take the plunge and get DLINK's firmware....it completely got rid of the resets for me. If you still have resets after installing then try all channels (1-11)...

There is something definetely wrong with the USR 1.21h and 1.64 firmware. Every setting I tried did not work...

What I did was change the firmware (tools, firmware).

1. Install di-624v115_rom.bin
2. Install di624p121b15nml.bin
3. Configure Router (mac address, WEP, etc.)

Oh...and the IP of the router WILL change to 192.168.0.1 BUT you can change it back to 192.168.123.254 if you want...I did .

This is why I love the internet...I would have NEVER thought it was a firmware issue....KUDOS for the guys who posted the fix.

I agree here, the most I gave this thing up for was an access point. Untill then it was just about a joke otherwise, it did a nice job as an access point though. I wondered every now and then why it would all of a sudden drop my wireless connection from the upstairs. I surely thought it was me or how I integrated it in the network. Nope, a bad firmware the whole time.

I upgraded my Dl-624+ rev. A firmware from 1.15 to 1.18, expecting better performance. On the contrary, using my laptop wireless connection I now cannot access certain folders on my desktop PC 1. Desktop PC 2 can access PC 1 without any problem, and both are wired connections, so I am guessing that the problem affects only the wireless connection. Moreover, internet access seems to be slower too than before the upgrade.

Does anyone have the Dl-624+ Rev A version 1.15 firmware floating around anywhere? I would most appreciate it if you could kindly post it here as I can't find it anywhere. Thanks.
