Re: The "Official" SP2 Bug Thread Was willing to give it a look this evening, it won't even successfully install on my machine without an error regarding "atapi.sys" during the installation process (this is on a box that was very recently formatted with a fresh xp install and hasn't had anything significant done since)
whil i am a bit adventurous and all, i had to choose to click cancel when it gave me the option to continue installing, ignoring the error, or just totally cancelling the install wholely, not quite ready for prime time, at least on my computer
edit: after a bit of fiddling with it and looking on google i found a post somewhere that indicated that daemon tools caused an atapi.sys error on install, seeing how i use a similar virtual drive program in alcohol 120% i assume this is the problem, thought i had a solution but it seems anything short of uninstalling alcohol will not suffice, it's useless to me i suppose at this point |

 | reply to Babar look at all the hacking you guys do to your machine. if you keep it the way billy recomemnds then you woldnt have problems. no trying to be a smart aleck but mine runs fine except for an initial slow boot restart and a disconnected lan connecation but that was because i had to renew my ip address. the frigging pop up blocker works so good i even got ride of my goodle toolbar--which by the way has a superior pop up blocker compared (and a neat counter) verus all the freeware and hacked shid people download. |

Re: The "Official" SP2 Bug Thread I experienced one problem so far. I receive an exception error when right clicking the start menu. This is strange since it does not occur anywhere else I have seen. Anyone here think that could be related to data execution protection? I think it is doubtful it is Windows related. As far as hardware is concerned, I notice this feature works with just the Intel Itanium processors. My Intel is a Pentium IV. |

Is increased memory consumption a bug too? Then add that.
Appears that Windows Update site was down last night. I kept getting errors and now it seems ok.
Only problem now is that it wants to reinstall SP1 and all the updates since. |

Was that a joke,Snoopy?
Running XP SP-2 upgrade on an older machine with a virus scanner, spyware scanner, mozilla and little else.
SP-2 is still acting erratically. Slow boots and slow shutdowns, screen locks on reboots.
More seriously: McAfee disappeared overnight. Got it back with a reboot, but what happened while away?
This is a new problem that never occurred before SP-2 . . . Screen Saver and Power Down on monitor were enabled, but not on hard drive and no sleep or hibernation enabled.
Cheers. |

| reply to Babar I have a whole list of problems that I didn't get fixed last night.
1. Security Center won't even display even after a complete shutdown. 2. Ati multimedia center crashes on every instance. 3. Even after reinstall remote wonder isn't recognized. 4. Occassional crashes when in control panel. 5. Bluetooth won't work. Says stack won't load. 6. Occassional IE crashes. 7. Even after supposedly disabling the firewall and after reducing all my settings to low I still cannot get dslreports to accept a login from me. (can't just click "low" anymore in internet options.) 8. My Norton antivirus crashes on Windows boot.
So I messed around for a little over 2 hours last night and got nowhere. -- Sometimes you just have to do it. |

Uninstall that and see if your system comes back to life. What version of Norton is it?
I am getting a real slow boot. It loads the background Picture after logging in but then sits there for a minute or longer before loading the desktop. -- Keep America safe Bush 2004 »www.georgewbush.com/KerryMediaCenter/ |

I get that as well but it's only about 15 seconds after the Wallpaper loads. I have the "welcome screen" disabled and that may have something to do with it. -- I could be wrong, now... but I don't think so! - Adrian Monk |

uninstall alcohol or daemon tools, update, then reinstall.
another option is, inside alcohol 120's settings, you get the choice of using alcohol's atapi, or use the default windows atapi. If you set it to use windows atapi, it wont hang the install of SP@ |

 | reply to Babar Here's another - when I set the 'Automatic Updates' service to manual, Windows Update complains about it being 'disabled' even if the service is running at the time.
As far as I'm aware, Windows should simply start the service when it needs it, if it's set to a manual start, and I don't think that it should be complaining about the service being 'disabled' when it's not. As well, on the same screen where I'm told about the automatic update problem, it also tells me that the Background Intelligent Transfer Service must be started, but it's not needed at all (since WU works fine as long as Automatic Updates is set to an automatic start, even when BITS is disabled and stopped). -- Therapy is expensive. | reply to TheGiant I think I might just uninstall and leave it uninstalled. Norton doesn't seem to be liking me the past few months with it doing some weird stuff. Probably will install AVG instead.

Situation: You would like more information regarding the Windows® XP Service Pack 2 release from Microsoft and whether your Symantec Norton products are compatible with Service Pack 2.
Solution: Windows® XP Service Pack 2 (SP2) is a major security-focused operating system upgrade that includes an enhanced Windows firewall and a utility (Windows Security Center) that monitors the state of your computer's security.
Symantec will release a product update to provide native support for the Windows Security Center status utility found in SP2. This update will be available worldwide over the coming weeks and will enable Symantec products to communicate their status to the Windows Security Center utility.
Symantec encourages its customers to install the product update prior to installing SP2 in order to avoid incorrect reporting from Windows Security Center. Symantecs consumer customers will receive notification from their Norton product when the update is available. Consumers will be able to download the SP2 product update by clicking the LiveUpdate icon found in their Norton security software.
The SP2 product update for English versions of Norton products will be available beginning August 10, 2004. At that time, Symantec will provide detailed information about SP2 and compatibility with Norton products, including frequently asked questions (FAQs) and support documentation. Please check back to »service.symantec.com/xpinfo on August 10, 2004.
Watch for your Norton updated soon. -- Keep America safe Bush 2004 »www.georgewbush.com/KerryMediaCenter/ |

 | reply to Babar For all the time it took them, im not impressed.
1)Cannot access WU v5 with Auto Updates disabled. What's the point of accessing it manually then? Bug!!!
2)Pop-up Blocker works but has made IE wery slow period.
3)Firewall??? If thats what u want to call it. It needs a better GUI. I am not sure if it has outbound protection, I keep reading mixed reviews and the help only talks about inbound protection but since I cant readily see it or access it then sorry it has to go. Old Firewall works fine. Kudos to MS for not breaking it.
System seems more stable with all the additional security features turned off or disabled. All my programs seem to be working so far |

 | reply to CeBear I had the testicles to install this POS. in a work machine and had nothing but problems. Thank GOD Im the IT guy. Un-installed quickly while system restore would not work. Things seem to be OK now, but boot times were incredibly LONG. Why would I even think to install a service pack on its first day of release. |

| reply to Babar The only box with an install problem had Nero. The SP2 installer couldn't find or backup Windows/system/atapi. I canceled and it asked to continue with out it, chose yes, and the rest of the install went perfect. I'll update Nero as recommended here. -- If you give a little they give a lot. |
