Mail Server Outage 8/09-8/10

This is the most tolerant group of subscribers I've ever seen! Digizip's mail server was down for hours last night/this morning, and no one has posted here regarding it.

I called them this morning. Their mail server had been down all night, starting to go intermittent around 11:30 p.m., 8/9, through around mid/late morning today, 8/10. I kept getting either "connection refused", or "sent successfully" (nothing was actually received by intended party), all night and morning.

When I called, I was told their mail server was down (duh!), and they had NO BACK-UP SERVER!!!! No ETR!! Everyone in tech support was busy trying to get the server back up and running. I spoke with a woman "executive", whose name I can't remember, who new *nothing*, but who was in a surprisingly JOVIAL, "Ha-Ha" mood considering their company's bread and butter hardware had done a total belly-flop disconnecting their many business customers' from mail service. I guess the embarrassment of having NO BACK-UP SERVERS in place was causing her compulsive chuckle-headed-ness, but I know I was not amused.

Digizip has been rock solid stable for me for over a year, so I guess this outage was overdue by industry standards. While it was short-lived, it was sobering to find they have NO BACK-UP SERVERS, or alternate, third party services to prevent this type of occurrence recurring.

Makes you think...

Doesnt really make me think twice about Digizip ....

I have never ever used ISPs email or newsgroups. Seems like most people that went MCI/Digizip route are here becasue of great upload for reasonable price.

And people who care about upload are usually running their own servers OR smart enough to cough up couple of bucks a year for REAL email provider.

I've had my email address for 8 years now. IN that time i've moved at least 5 times from Chicago to NY to Florida , and now CA.

You can do what you want. I expect to get what I pay for; that includes 24/7/365 uptime on both internet access and mail service. I don't care if they don't have 24/7 tech support, if they have redundant systems to ensure uninterrupted service.

There are other reasons for wanting high upload speed besides running your own server. Not running my own server at this point, but that doesn't make me stupid! Neither does not paying extra for additional mail service on top of that already included with my ISP service.

I've had no major complaints w/digizip otherwise, taxes excepted, as I said. If Digizip wants to be around for the long run, they better start thinking about their critical systems/response and customer service interface.

Your last sentence was irrelevant. A lot of AOL'ers and YAHOO'ers could say the same.

Could not send message: "501 5.5.2 ... "saiyen" Domain name required "

My brother got that message when he tries to send any email from saiyen@digizip.com but everything is fine when I send with realorc@digizip.com We were sending through webmail. Did anyone have any problems like this with their secondary email accounts?

You said it well Ross. I guess I have gotten what I paid for, I've had my Yahoo (my main) email address for about that time also. I forget where I put my last bill or I'd tell everyone the monthly price. Oh wait, it's free!

You know what? This ain't the "olden days", 1.5/768 ain't bleeding edge, e-mail servers ain't alien magic boxes. Redundant equipment is a prerequisite for all reliable services, and reputable and responsible service providers. If I wanted a fly-by-night ISP, I am sure there'd be no shortage to be found. After a year and a half, I expected Digizip would have rock solid servers, and backup server systems, in place. They say not.

I have a couple of free web mail accounts, but prefer to use my ISP provided e-mail service. Especially, for business use. Is that asking too much? Do I have to put up with people who don't think redundant servers are necessary? I don't want to switch providers, I'd just like to get what I pay for.

I already use uunet DNS servers because Digizip's default AT&T DNS servers are too slow, route me all over Canada, and have huge latency.

Ross,

As usual, you make good points all around, but you should really get a Yahoo address. As you say, "1.5/768 ain't bleeding edge" and it's likely you will switch to another ISP when something better comes along. Why should you switch your email address if you don't have to? I don't know about you but I can't imagine going through the nightmare of moving my email again. ISPs come and go but Yahoo is free, reliable, accessible and now they give 100 MB of storage.
