[Vonage] Vonage work with Tivo?

I am sure this has been asked a million times but I can't seem to find any info on it. Anyone know if Tivo and Satellite receivers work with VoIP/Vonage?

Some do all the time
Some do sometimes
Some don't
(That's the short version).
Most TiVo's do if you add an external modem.

This is assuming you have a jitter free cable/dsl connection. If your cable/dsl is congested all bet's are off.

For me: Two DirecTiVo's (Series 1) - both are not having trouble making daily calls. The only time I need the external modem hooked up is when they dial out for a loooooong software update (several hour download)

I just got my Series2 DirecTivo working last night. Here's what I had to do in order to get it working.

1) Have Vonage change my packetization rate to 10ms
2) Have Vonage upgrade the firmware in my MTA to the latest version.

After that everything worked perfectly, no codes, external modem, or ADSL adapter.

Get a ReplayTV. It only needs an ethernet connection.

Try Broadvox Direct instead. Their new device supports Tivo and DirecTV, etc. much better. In fact, this is a feature that the company has been actually working on developing support for. All I can say is that it seems to be working with my Dish Network receiver whereas their previous device (the Sipura SPA 2000) didn't work at all with Dish.

I called Vonage to update my firmware, they also said to try the prefix [,#034] and after about 7 failed downloads it finally worked *sigh*

Just curious, why are people (especially with Series 2 Tivos) monkeying around with dialup? Why not pick up a $30 USB Ethernet adapter and do the update over TCP/IP instead?

If they have a Series 2 DirecTivo they cannot use the USB port without a hack, because it is unsupported.

FWIW, older ReplayTV models are dialup only. I read on the AVS Forum (www.avsforum.com) that many have had great success with older ReplayTV boxes "dialing home" nightly using Vonage.

Has anyone tried a DirecTivo via the FAX line on the MTA to see if it works better that way?

I could only wish that was possible but with the Series 2 Tivos (Stand alone) but you have to do the guided set up via the phone line which makes 2 calls to Tivo, the first call is no problem but the second call takes about 10-20 trys, luckily the download picks up were it left off on the last failed download....after that misery all you need is a USB Wifi adapter to get the updates from the net other than the phone, you can also use the Tivo as a mp3 and jpeg server

Oh, that is a bummer that the DirecTV Tivo's won't do Ethernet. We got a Series 2 a week or so ago and it's pretty sweet. I just plugged it into our regular phone line late at night and let it do the big update, and after that have been doing it all over Ethernet. I've read that what some people do if they don't have good dialup is to take the Tivo to a friend's house or to work to let it do the first phone-only download - the box doesn't know/care where it's located.

Hopefully they'll get it fixed soon so that even the first big download can happen over TCP/IP.

I have 4 Dtivos 3 are series 2 all working with Vonage. Had to use the 2 codes to slow it down but it works 100% of the time now.

I've also got 2 Series 2 Tivo's and they both work fine with no codes.

Since I have unlimited long distance on my Vonage account, I found it helpful to dial a number that's in your nearest major city. The modems and phone links seem to be of better quality thus less dropped calls. I couldn't get my connection to work 40 miles north of Dallas dialing my local number, but if I dialed a Dallas number, it worked just fine.

go to »www.tivocommunity.com and there are a million and one posts on this with suggestions and even instructions on how to get an external 14.4 or 28.8 modem to work.

I was never able to get my Directivo series 2 to work over Vonage. Gave up and got a POTS line because I was sick of the nag messages.

Quick comment: I have a ReplayTV DVR, and it DOES connect over Vonage...almost. If I leave the modem settings at "Default" (33.6K) it never connects. But, if I change the modem connect speed to 19.2K, it connects every time. The dial-out does tke longer, but it certainly is worth the extra time for compatibility.

That said, and more to the topic, does TiVo have a way to modify the modem connect speed? id it does, I would suspect that 19.2K would work for TiVo users also...

Tivo doesn't have anyway of changing the modem settings, although its built on Linux so it my be possible in a future update, otherwise once you get the guided setup done you wont need the dial up modem any more, mine has been connecting via wifi for about 4 days now since I set it up

pcwiz,

Are yours Series 1 or Series 2 DirecTivos? What model #s?

Also, can you post your dialing prefix that has proven most successful?

Just get a DVR from the cable company, its only 5 buck a month, half that of Tivos and you dont have to mess with phone lines.
